The excitation of O2 in auroras
Newly measured electron impact cross sections for excitation of the a 1 Delta g and b 1 Sigma g+ electronic states of O2 were employed to predict the absolute volume emission rates from these states under auroral conditions. A secondary electron electron flux typical of an IBC II nighttime aurora was used and the most important quenching processes were included in the calculations. The new excitation cross sections for the a 1 Delta g and b 1 Sigma g+ states are more than an order of magnitude larger than previous estimates, and lead to correspondingly greater intensities in the atmospheric and IR-atmospheric band systems. The calculated intensity ratios of the volume emission rates of 7621 A and 1.27 microns to that for 3914 A are smaller than obtained from aircraft observations and recent rocket experiments

Knowledge in (Geo)Visualisation: The relationship between seeing and thinking
Modern research in geovisualisation has framed the discipline as a field more akin to geovisual analytics - one that pleaces an emphasis on the human elements of exploration of data through interactive and dynamic geo-interfaces, rather than simple data representation. This rephrasing highlights the importance of cognitive aspects of human interaction with geo-based data and the interfaces designed to present them. In an attempt to provide a psychological background to the benefits of geovisual analytics, this paper will explroe the role that perception hasi n complex problem solving and knowledge discovery, and will demonstrate that, through modern interactive technologies, (geo)visualiations augment and facilitate our natural ability to surface novel, surprising and otherwise invisible relationships between information. It will argue that it is through these novel relationships that we add to our understandings of the original information and simultaneously reveal new knowledge 'between the gaps'
Effect of temperature, rainfall and planting date on aflatoxin and fumonisin contamination in commercial Bt and non-Bt corn hybrids in Arkansas
Corn (maize, Zea mays) is susceptible to contamination with aflatoxins, fumonisins and other mycotoxins, particularly in the southeastern USA. In principle, mycotoxin contamination could be reduced in commercial corn hybrids with shorter growing seasons by planting at dates which minimize plant stress during the critical kernel-filling period. To evaluate this strategy, commercial Bt and non-Bt hybrids were planted in Arkansas in mid-April and early May of 2002, 2004 and 2005. The mid-April planting date resulted in lower aflatoxin contamination in harvested corn each yr and in significantly less frequent contamination above a regulatory action level in 2005 and overall than did the early-May planting date in both Bt and non-Bt corn. The mid-April planting date resulted in significantly lower total fumonisin contamination in harvested corn and in less frequent contamination above a regulatory advisory level than the early May planting date in 2 of 3 yr and overall in both Bt and non-Bt corn. All fumonisin subtypes studied were reduced. Frequent co-occurrence of aflatoxin and fumonisin was observed. Fumonisin levels averaged lower in Bt hybrids than in non-Bt hybrids at all plantings. Reduced aflatoxin and fumonisin contamination with mid-April planting could not be explained by any measure of heat stress during the kernel-filling period.Le maïs (Zea mays) est sensible à la contamination par les aflatoxines, les fumonisines et d'autres mycotoxines, surtout dans le sud-est des États-Unis. En principe, la contamination par les mycotoxines pourrait être diminuée chez les hybrides commerciaux de maïs par des saisons de croissance plus courtes en plantant à des dates qui minimisent le stress sur les plantes au moment de la période critique du remplissage des grains. Pour évaluer cette stratégie, des hybrides commerciaux Bt et non Bt ont été semés en Arkansas de la mi-avril au début de mai 2002, 2004 et 2005. Pour toutes les années, tant pour le maïs Bt que le non Bt, le grain issu des semis de la mi-avril était moins contaminé aux aflatoxines que celui semé au début de mai. De même, la contamination supérieure aux niveaux légalement acceptés a été moindre en 2005 et dans l'ensemble pour les semis de la mi-avril. Avec les semis de la mi-avril, il y avait significativement moins de contamination par les fumonisines dans le grain récolté et moins de contamination supérieure aux niveaux légalement acceptés qu'avec les semis du début de mai pour deux des trois années et dans l'ensemble, tant pour le maïs Bt que celui non Bt. La quantité de tous les sous-types de fumonisines étudiés a été diminuée. La présence simultanée d'aflatoxines et de fumonisines a fréquemment été observée. Pour tous les semis, les quantités de fumonisines des hybrides Bt ont été inférieures en moyenne à celles des hybrides non Bt. Les moindres contaminations par les aflatoxines et les fumonisines avec les semis de la mi-avril n'ont pu être expliquées par aucune des mesures du stress causé par la chaleur lors de la période du remplissage des grains
Global Diffusion in a Realistic Three-Dimensional Time-Dependent Nonturbulent Fluid Flow
We introduce and study the first model of an experimentally realizable
three-dimensional time-dependent nonturbulent fluid flow to display the
phenomenon of global diffusion of passive-scalar particles at arbitrarily small
values of the nonintegrable perturbation. This type of chaotic advection,
termed {\it resonance-induced diffusion\/}, is generic for a large class of

The Regolith of 4 Vesta - Inferences from Howardites
Asteroid 4 Vesta is quite likely the parent asteroid of the howardite, eucrite and diogenite meteorites - the HED clan. Eucrites and diogenites are the products of igneous processes; the former are basaltic composition rocks from flows, and shallow and deep intrusive bodies, whilst the latter are cumulate orthopyroxenites thought to have formed deep in the crust. Impact processes have excavated these materials and mixed them into a suite of polymict breccias. Howardites are polymict breccias composed mostly of clasts and mineral fragments of eucritic and diogenitic parentage, with neither end-member comprising more than 90% of the rock. Early work interpreted howardites as representing the lithified regolith of their parent asteroid. Recently, howardites have been divided into two subtypes; fragmental howardites, being a type of non-regolithic polymict breccia, and regolithic howardites, being lithified remnants of the active regolith of 4 Vesta. We are in the thralls of a collaborative investigation of the record of impact mixing contained within howardites, which includes studies of their mineralogy, petrology, bulk rock compositions, and bulk rock and clast noble gas contents. One goal of our investigation is to test the hypothesis that some howardites represent breccias formed from an ancient, well-mixed regolith on Vesta. Another is to use our results to further understand regolith processing on differentiated asteroids as compared to what has been learned from the Moon. We have made petrographic observations and electron microprobe analyses on 21 howardites and 3 polymict eucrites. We have done bulk rock analyses using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and are completing inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses. Here, we discuss our petrologic and bulk compositional results in the context of regolith formation. DASI First Results: A Measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background Angular Power Spectrum
We present measurements of anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background
(CMB) from the first season of observations with the Degree Angular Scale
Interferometer (DASI). The instrument was deployed at the South Pole in the
austral summer 1999--2000, and made observations throughout the following
austral winter. We have measured the angular power spectrum of the CMB in the
range 100<l<900 with high signal-to-noise. In this paper we review the
formalism used in the analysis, in particular the use of constraint matrices to
project out contaminants such as ground and point source signals, and to test
for correlations with diffuse foreground templates. We find no evidence of
foregrounds other than point sources in the data, and find a maximum likelihood
temperature spectral index beta = -0.1 +/- 0.2 (1 sigma), consistent with CMB.
We detect a first peak in the power spectrum at l approx 200, in agreement with
previous experiments. In addition, we detect a peak in the power spectrum at l
approx 550 and power of similar magnitude at l approx 800 which are consistent
with the second and third harmonic peaks predicted by adiabatic inflationary

Robust Magnetic Polarons in Type-II (Zn,Mn)Te Quantum Dots
We present evidence of magnetic ordering in type-II (Zn, Mn) Te quantum dots.
This ordering is attributed to the formation of bound magnetic polarons caused
by the exchange interaction between the strongly localized holes and Mn within
the dots. In our photoluminescence studies, the magnetic polarons are detected
at temperatures up to ~ 200 K, with a binding energy of ~ 40 meV. In addition,
these dots display an unusually small Zeeman shift with applied field (2 meV at
10 T). This behavior is explained by a small and weakly temperature-dependent
magnetic susceptibility due to anti-ferromagnetic coupling of the Mn spins
The Continuing Quest for "Regolithic" Howardites
The howardite, eucrite and diogenite (HED) meteorites likely originate from asteroid 4-Vesta, the first of two asteroids targeted by NASA's Dawn mission]. Howardites are polymict breccias dominantly composed of basaltic (eucrite) and orthopyroxenitic (diogenite) material. They are believed to originate from the surface of Vesta, and may represent the regolithic surface layer. Many howardites contain "regolith"-like features including fragmental breccias clasts, carbonaceous chondrite fragments and melt clasts (impact and volcanic). Though such features may relate to asteroid regolith formation processes, the exact regolithic nature of the howardite suite is not well defined
Impact History on Vesta: Petrographic, Compositional and Future Chronological Studies of Melt Clasts in Howardites
Howardite meteorites are polymict breccias composed mainly of eucritic and diogenitic material that likely originate from the surface of the Asteroid 4 Vesta. They can be separated into two subtypes: Regolithic, which represent the lithified remains of the active vestan regolith; Fragmental, which represent simpler polymict breccias. Amongst the regolithic features observed in the former, melt clasts are particularly striking for their appearance and compositional variability. They range from glassy spherules to finely crystalline (i.e., devitrified) clasts, and clasts containing only relict mineral grains to those containing only phenocrysts. Glasses can be separated into compositional sub-types including those with low FeO/MgO ratios (less than 5) -low alkali glasses, K-rich (K2O greater than 0.2 wt.%), Na-rich (Na2O greater than 0.6 wt.%) and CaO-rich, and those with high FeO/MgO ratios (greater than 10). There is also a distinction to be made between primary volcanic melt clasts and those produced by impacts. While suggested that a lack of chemical homogeneity among their studied melt clasts ruled out a primary volcanic origin, the low siderophile element contents observed in such clasts suggest less compositional influence from impactors than commonly assumed. Studying the chronology of the impact melt clasts in howardites can help us to better determine the timing of impact events on Vesta and the asteroid belt. In this research, we are launching an investigation into the petrology, composition (major/trace element and noble gas) and chronology of melt clasts in howardites. We have selected a set of howardites known to contain large quantities of melt clasts, and have begun the petrological and compositional studies of these materials. Once the melt clasts have been fully classified, we aim to perform chronological studies of individual clasts using both the Ar-40/Ar-39 and Pb-Pb chronometers, as well as determine the noble gas components present. Of particular note, the study will take advantage of the laser ablation techniques associated with the noble gas facilities at ASU, which will allow high-resolution, in-situ analysis of individual clasts. The broader aim of this work is to ascertain whether the impact flux in the region of the asteroid belt was similar to that on the Moon. Our understanding of impact events in the inner Solar System relies heavily on our analyses of lunar meteorites and returned samples, and there is currently some debate regarding whether there was a "Lunar Cataclysm" event around approx. 3.9 Ga, or the end of an epoch of "Late Heavy Bombardment" (LHB) at this time. New and more comprehensive constraints on howardite melt clast ages may help determine whether the asteroid belt experienced such a cataclysm or LHB
