Magnetic and axial vector form factors as probes of orbital angular momentum in the proton
We have recently examined the static properties of the baryon octet (magnetic
moments and axial vector coupling constants) in a generalized quark model in
which the angular momentum of a polarized nucleon is partly spin and partly orbital . The orbital momentum was
represented by the rotation of a flux-tube connecting the three constituent
quarks. The best fit is obtained with ,
. We now consider the consequences of this
idea for the -dependence of the magnetic and axial vector form factors. It
is found that the isovector magnetic form factor
differs in shape from the axial form factor by an amount that
depends on the spatial distribution of orbital angular momentum. The model of a
rigidly rotating flux-tube leads to a relation between the magnetic, axial
vector and matter radii, , where , . The shape of is found to be close to a dipole

A Fully Differential Digital CMOS Pulse UWB Generator
A new fully-digital CMOS pulse generator for impulse-radio Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) systems is presented. First, the shape of the pulse which best fits the FCC regulation in the 3.1-5 GHz sub-band of the entire 3.1-10.6 GHz UWB bandwidth is derived and approximated using rectangular digital pulses. In particular, the number and width of pulses that approximate an ideal template is found through an ad-hoc optimization methodology. Then a fully differential digital CMOS circuit that synthesizes the pulse sequence is conceived and its functionality demonstrated through post-layout simulations. Cognitive Impairment and Age-Related Vision Disorders: Their Possible Relationship and the Evaluation of the Use of Aspirin and Statins in a 65 Years-and-Over Sardinian Population
Neurological disorders (Alzheimer’s disease, vascular and mixed dementia) and visual loss (cataract, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy) are among the most common conditions that afflict people of at least 65 years of age. An increasing body of evidence is emerging, which demonstrates that memory and vision impairment are closely, significantly, and positively linked and that statins and aspirin may lessen the risk of developing age-related visual and neurological problems. However, clinical studies have produced contradictory results. Thus, the intent of the present study was to reliably establish whether a relationship exist between various types of dementia and age-related vision disorders, and to establish whether statins and aspirin may or may not have beneficial effects on these two types of disorders. We found that participants with dementia and/or vision problems were more likely to be depressed and displayed worse functional ability in basic and instrumental activities of daily living than controls. Mini mental state examination scores were significantly lower in patients with vision disorders compared to subjects without vision disorders. A closer association with macular degeneration was found in subjects with Alzheimer’s disease than in subjects without dementia or with vascular dementia, mixed dementia, or other types of age-related vision disorders. When we considered the associations between different types of dementia and vision disorders and the use of statins and aspirin, we found a significant positive association between Alzheimer’s disease and statins on their own or in combination with aspirin, indicating that these two drugs do not appear to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease or improve its clinical evolution and may, on the contrary, favor its development. No significant association in statin use alone, aspirin use alone, or the combination of these was found in subjects without vision disorders but with dementia, and, similarly, none in subjects with vision disorders but without dementia. Overall, these results confirm the general impression so far; namely, that macular degeneration may contribute to cognitive disorders (Alzheimer’s disease in particular). In addition, they also suggest that, while statin and aspirin use may undoubtedly have some protective effects, they do not appear to be magic pills against the development of cognitive impairment or vision disorders in the elderly
Quark Orbital Angular Momentum in the Baryon
Analytical and numerical results, for the orbital and spin content carried by
different quark flavors in the baryons, are given in the chiral quark model
with symmetry breaking. The reduction of the quark spin, due to the spin
dilution in the chiral splitting processes, is transferred into the orbital
motion of quarks and antiquarks. The orbital angular momentum for each quark
flavor in the proton as a function of the partition factor and the
chiral splitting probability is shown. The cancellation between the spin
and orbital contributions in the spin sum rule and in the baryon magnetic

Octet Baryon Magnetic Moments in the Chiral Quark Model with Configuration Mixing
The Coleman-Glashow sum-rule for magnetic moments is always fulfilled in the
chiral quark model, independently of SU(3) symmetry breaking. This is due to
the structure of the wave functions, coming from the non-relativistic quark
model. Experimentally, the Coleman-Glashow sum-rule is violated by about ten
standard deviations. To overcome this problem, two models of wave functions
with configuration mixing are studied. One of these models violates the
Coleman-Glashow sum-rule to the right degree and also reproduces the octet
baryon magnetic moments rather accurately.Comment: 22 pages, RevTe
Power-Gating Technique for Network-on-Chip Buffers
A new approach to reducing leakage power in network-on-chip buffers is presented. The non-uniformity of buffer utilisation is leveraged across the network and power-gating is applied to scarcely utilised buffers. Instead of turning-off the buffers completely, a buffer portion is kept turned-on. This design choice has a significant performance benefit because the buffer is always able to receive network packets. Design aspects and trade-offs in a 45 nm CMOS technology are discussed and results obtained over video application benchmarks are presented. It is shown that it is possible to reduce buffer leakage by 40% without performance penalt
Geodetic model of the 2016 Central Italy earthquake sequence inferred from InSAR and GPS data
We investigate a large geodetic data set of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)and GPS measurements to determine the source parameters for the three main shocks of the 2016Central Italy earthquake sequence on 24 August and 26 and 30 October (Mw6.1, 5.9, and 6.5,respectively). Our preferred model is consistent with the activation of four main coseismic asperitiesbelonging to the SW dipping normal fault system associated with the Mount Gorzano-Mount Vettore-Mount Bove alignment. Additional slip, equivalent to aMw~ 6.1–6.2 earthquake, on a secondary (1) NEdipping antithetic fault and/or (2) on a WNW dipping low-angle fault in the hanging wall of the mainsystem is required to better reproduce the complex deformation pattern associated with the greatestseismic event (theMw6.5 earthquake). The recognition of ancillary faults involved in the sequencesuggests a complex interaction in the activated crustal volume between the main normal faults and thesecondary structures and a partitioning of strain releas
VISTA Milky Way public survey
We propose a public IR variability survey, named \Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea" (V V V ), of the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the mid-plane where star formation activity is high. This would take 1920 hours, covering ~ 109 point sources within an area of 520 sq deg, including 33 known globular clusters and ~ 350 open clusters. The final products will be a deep IR atlas in 5 passbands and a catalogue of ~ 106 variable point sources. These will produce a 3-D map of the surveyed region (unlike single-epoch surveys that only give 2-D maps) using well-understood primary distance indicators such as RR Lyrae stars. It will yield important information on the ages of the populations. The observations will be combined with data from MACHO, OGLE, EROS, VST, SPITZER, HST, CHANDRA, INTEGRAL, and ALMA for a complete understanding of the variable sources in the inner Milky Way. Several important implications for the history of the Milky Way, for globular cluster evolution, for the population census of the bulge and center, and for pulsation theory would follow from this survey
Measurement of the front-end dead-time of the LHCb muon detector and evaluation of its contribution to the muon detection inefficiency
A method is described which allows to deduce the dead-time of the front-end
electronics of the LHCb muon detector from a series of measurements performed
at different luminosities at a bunch-crossing rate of 20 MHz. The measured
values of the dead-time range from 70 ns to 100 ns. These results allow to
estimate the performance of the muon detector at the future bunch-crossing rate
of 40 MHz and at higher luminosity
