Visualization of acoustic intensity vector fields using scanning measurement techniques
Sound propagation paths are not always well understood mainly because of the complex nature of the source or the environment. A direct method to capture the sound energy flow throughout a room is to measure the three-dimensional sound intensity distribution across space. In the past years, several studies have been carried out using step by step measurements with a three-dimensional intensity probe consisting of a sound pressure transducer and three orthogonal particle velocity sensors. The probe’s ability to measure even in highly reverberant environments and its small size are key features required for numerous applications. However, punctual measurements are time-consuming, especially when a large number of measurement positions are evaluated. The use of advanced scanning measurement techniques, such Scan & Paint, allows for the gathering of data across a time stationary sound field in a fast and efficient way, using a single sensor and webcam only. The acoustic signals are acquired manually by moving a probe across a measurement plane whilst filming the event with a camera. In the post-processing stage, the sensor position is extracted and then used for linking a segment of the signal acquired to a certain position of the space. In this manner, the overall measurement time is reduced from hours to minutes. In this paper, the acoustic intensity vector fields of several complex examples are investigated; revealing the acoustic energy flow of several vehicles, a loudspeaker in a room, and also the interaction between an absorbing sample and a reverberant sound field
Staircase to Higher-Order Topological Phase Transitions
We find a series of topological phase transitions of increasing order, beyond
the more standard second-order phase transition in a one-dimensional
topological superconductor. The jumps in the order of the transitions depend on
the range of the pairing interaction, which is parametrized by an algebraic
decay with exponent . Remarkably, in the limit the order
of the topological transition becomes infinite. We compute the critical
exponents for the series of higher-order transitions in exact form and find
that they fulfill the hyperscaling relation. We also study the critical
behaviour at the boundary of the system and discuss potential experimental
platforms of magnetic atoms in superconductors.Comment: 5+5pages, 7 figures. Accepted as a Rapid Communicatio
Flow cytometric determination of circulating immune complexes with the indirect granulocyte phagocytosis test
A method for the determination of circulating immune complexes (CIC) was adapted for flow cytometric analysis. Human granulocytes were used to phagocytose IgG-bearing CIC of serum from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. A method for labeling the phagocytosed CIC with FITC-conjugated anti-human IgG was developed where the granulocytes remain in suspension during fixation and labeling. The fluorescence per cell, measured with a flow cytometer, is a measure of the total amount of the phagocytosed IgG. The results indicate that a rapid and quantitative method for the detection and measurement of phagocytosed CIC is possible using the flow cytometer

EVALUATION OF DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS: A COMPARISON OF THE ROME, NEW YORK AND MODIFIED NEW YORK CRITERIA IN PATIENTS WITH A POSITIVE CLINICAL HISTORY SCREENING TEST FOR ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS
The modified New York criteria for the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis were evaluated and compared to the older criteria in 151 patients, referred to hospital because of low back pain and who had a positive clinical history screening test for ankylosing spondylitis and in 31 controls with noninflammatory back pain. Radiological examination of the sacro-iliac joints showed sacro-iliitis in 124 (82%) from the 151 with inflammatory back pain. In 110(72%) of those patients a diagnosis of definite ankylosing spondylitis according to the classical New York criteria could be made and they had a prevalence of HLA-B27 of 84%. Application of the modified New York scheme increased the number of patients meeting the criteria for definite ankylosing spondylitis to all 124 patients with sacro-iliitis, and 82% of this group carried HLA-B27. The classical New York criteria of ‘limitation of the lumbar spine in three directions' and of ‘limitation of chest expansion' appeared to reflect disease duration rather than help in the initial diagnosi
