'Manxness': The Uses of Heritage on the Isle of Man
This article examines how the Isle of Man, a self-governing crown dependency located in the center of the British Isles, uses heritage to create social stability among a diverse and rapidly changing population. The result of this process has been a powerful model of heritage branding through which all definitions of national identity must flow. After tracing the development of ‘Manx’ national identity from the Victorian era to the present, this article explores the benefits and limitations of the Isle of Man’s political uses of its history and shares insight from the practice of public history on the Isle of Man
The role of macroeconomic policies in the global crisis
This paper argues that the lack of timely and decisive policy action to correct domestic and external imbalances contributed crucially to the build-up of financial excesses that led to the financial crisis and the Great Recession. We focus on 2002-07 and perform a number of counterfactual simulations to investigate two central elements of the story, namely: (a) an over-expansionary US monetary policy and the absence of effective macro-prudential supervision, which permitted a prolonged expansion of debt-financed consumer spending; (b) the decision of China and other emerging countries to pursue an export-led growth strategy supported by pegging their currencies to the US dollar, resulting in a huge build-up of their official reserves, in conjunction with sluggish domestic demand in surplus advanced economies characterized by low potential output growth. The results of the simulations lend support to the view that if substantial, globally coordinated demand rebalancing had been undertaken in a timely manner, the macroeconomic and financial imbalances would not have accumulated to the extent that they did and the financial turmoil might have had less drastic global consequences.global imbalances, financial crisis, monetary policy, macroprudential regulation, structural reforms.
Automatic detection of arcs and arclets formed by gravitational lensing
We present an algorithm developed particularly to detect gravitationally
lensed arcs in clusters of galaxies. This algorithm is suited for automated
surveys as well as individual arc detections. New methods are used for image
smoothing and source detection. The smoothing is performed by so-called
anisotropic diffusion, which maintains the shape of the arcs and does not
disperse them. The algorithm is much more efficient in detecting arcs than

Cognitive Impairment and Age-Related Vision Disorders: Their Possible Relationship and the Evaluation of the Use of Aspirin and Statins in a 65 Years-and-Over Sardinian Population
Neurological disorders (Alzheimer’s disease, vascular and mixed dementia) and visual loss (cataract, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy) are among the most common conditions that afflict people of at least 65 years of age. An increasing body of evidence is emerging, which demonstrates that memory and vision impairment are closely, significantly, and positively linked and that statins and aspirin may lessen the risk of developing age-related visual and neurological problems. However, clinical studies have produced contradictory results. Thus, the intent of the present study was to reliably establish whether a relationship exist between various types of dementia and age-related vision disorders, and to establish whether statins and aspirin may or may not have beneficial effects on these two types of disorders. We found that participants with dementia and/or vision problems were more likely to be depressed and displayed worse functional ability in basic and instrumental activities of daily living than controls. Mini mental state examination scores were significantly lower in patients with vision disorders compared to subjects without vision disorders. A closer association with macular degeneration was found in subjects with Alzheimer’s disease than in subjects without dementia or with vascular dementia, mixed dementia, or other types of age-related vision disorders. When we considered the associations between different types of dementia and vision disorders and the use of statins and aspirin, we found a significant positive association between Alzheimer’s disease and statins on their own or in combination with aspirin, indicating that these two drugs do not appear to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease or improve its clinical evolution and may, on the contrary, favor its development. No significant association in statin use alone, aspirin use alone, or the combination of these was found in subjects without vision disorders but with dementia, and, similarly, none in subjects with vision disorders but without dementia. Overall, these results confirm the general impression so far; namely, that macular degeneration may contribute to cognitive disorders (Alzheimer’s disease in particular). In addition, they also suggest that, while statin and aspirin use may undoubtedly have some protective effects, they do not appear to be magic pills against the development of cognitive impairment or vision disorders in the elderly
Simultaneous denoising and enhancement of signals by a fractal conservation law
In this paper, a new filtering method is presented for simultaneous noise
reduction and enhancement of signals using a fractal scalar conservation law
which is simply the forward heat equation modified by a fractional
anti-diffusive term of lower order. This kind of equation has been first
introduced by physicists to describe morphodynamics of sand dunes. To evaluate
the performance of this new filter, we perform a number of numerical tests on
various signals. Numerical simulations are based on finite difference schemes
or Fast and Fourier Transform. We used two well-known measuring metrics in
signal processing for the comparison. The results indicate that the proposed
method outperforms the well-known Savitzky-Golay filter in signal denoising.
Interesting multi-scale properties w.r.t. signal frequencies are exhibited
allowing to control both denoising and contrast enhancement
Re-examining the decline in the US saving rate: The impact of mortgage equity withdrawal
In this paper we examine the role of mortgage equity withdrawal in explaining the decline of the US saving rate, since when house prices rise and mortgage rates are low, homeowners have an incentive to withdraw housing equity and this may affect the saving rate. We estimate a Vector Error Correction (VEC) model including the sav- ing rate, asset prices, equity withdrawal and interest rates and find that indeed mortgage equity withdrawal is a key determinant of the observed saving pattern
Seismic Fault Preserving Diffusion
This paper focuses on the denoising and enhancing of 3-D reflection seismic
data. We propose a pre-processing step based on a non linear diffusion
filtering leading to a better detection of seismic faults. The non linear
diffusion approaches are based on the definition of a partial differential
equation that allows us to simplify the images without blurring relevant
details or discontinuities. Computing the structure tensor which provides
information on the local orientation of the geological layers, we propose to
drive the diffusion along these layers using a new approach called SFPD
(Seismic Fault Preserving Diffusion). In SFPD, the eigenvalues of the tensor
are fixed according to a confidence measure that takes into account the
regularity of the local seismic structure. Results on both synthesized and real
3-D blocks show the efficiency of the proposed approach.Comment: 10 page

On 4 March 2011, SUERF – The European Money and Finance Forum and the National Bank of Poland jointly organised a conference on the theme of: "Monetary Policy after the Crisis". Following a call for papers with a large number of submissions, the scientific committee selected 9 papers, which were grouped in three sessions addressing the following three research questions: First, what have we learnt from the crisis for the conduct of monetary policy? Second, what have we learnt from the crisis for the coordination of monetary, fiscal and macroprudential policies. Molecular electrometer and binding of cations to phospholipid bilayers
Despite the vast amount of experimental and theoretical studies on the binding affinity of cations -especially the biologically relevant Na+ and Ca2+ - for phospholipid bilayers, there is no consensus in the literature. Here we show that by interpreting changes in the choline headgroup order parameters according to the 'molecular electrometer' concept [Seelig et al., Biochemistry, 1987, 26, 7535], one can directly compare the ion binding affinities between simulations and experiments. Our findings strongly support the view that in contrast to Ca2+ and other multivalent ions, Na+ and other monovalent ions (except Li+) do not specifically bind to phosphatidylcholine lipid bilayers at sub-molar concentrations. However, the Na+ binding affinity was overestimated by several molecular dynamics simulation models, resulting in artificially positively charged bilayers and exaggerated structural effects in the lipid headgroups. While qualitatively correct headgroup order parameter response was observed with Ca2+ binding in all the tested models, no model had sufficient quantitative accuracy to interpret the Ca2+: lipid stoichiometry or the induced atomistic resolution structural changes.
