Redundant sensorized arm+hand system for space telerobotized manipulation

    Get PDF
An integrated system, composed of an arm, a wrist, and a mechanical multifingered hand is treated. The hand is on development for possible application in telemanipulation, and is realized in separate parts. The redundancy of the degrees of freedom of the system, the sensors, the application of logical rules, and the supervision of teleoperators may be applied in order to have an optimum of reliability of the system in space telemanipulations

De la construction à l'usage des règles de gestion des compétences : quelle innovation ?

    Get PDF

    Hyperbilirubinemia: Does It Matter?

    Get PDF
Serum bilirubin concentrations are increased in several hematological and hepatic disorders; however, hyperbilirubinemia, often of familial origin, may occur without overt signs of hemolysis or evident liver disease. The authors review briefly the main steps of hepatic bilirubin metabolism, then discuss the pathogenetic mechanisms of the different forms of familial hyperbilirubinemia. The knowledge of these conditions is increasingly important because orthotopic liver transplantation may be a therapeutic choice for some severe forms. Furthermore, early diagnosis is necessary to avoid unnecessary medical investigations for the otherwise relatively common, benign unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Finally, individuals with unmasked defective bilirubin handling may be potential liver donors; thus, unexplained jaundice occurring after orthotopic liver transplantation may be related to this disorder

The NOMAD Experiment at the CERN SPS

    Get PDF
The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for νμ − ντ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The ντ's are searched for through their charged current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting τ− through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. This paper describes the various components of the NOMAD detector: the target and muon drift chambers, the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, the preshower and transition radiation detectors and the veto and trigger scintillation counters. The beam and data acquisition system are also described. The quality of the reconstruction and individual particles is demonstrated through the ability of NOMAD to observe Ks0's, Λ0's and π0's. Finally, the observation of τ− through its electronic decay being one of the most promising channels in the search, the identification of electrons in NOMAD is discussed

Persistent Megalocystic Ovary Following in Vitro Fertilization in a Postpartum Patient with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

SummaryObjectiveOvarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is more severe when pregnancy occurs, as the developing pregnancy produces human chorionic gonadotropin, which stimulates the ovary's persistent growth. If no pregnancy occurs, the syndrome will typically resolve within 1 week. In a maintained pregnancy, slow resolution of symptoms usually occurs over 1-2 months.Case ReportA 31-year-old woman, gravida 2, para 1, aborta 1, with polycystic ovary syndrome underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) with clomiphene citrate and follicle-stimulating hormone/gonadotropin releasing hormone-antagonist stimulation. During transvaginal oocyte retrieval, enlarged bilateral ovaries were noted. She had an episode of OHSS after IVF/embryo transfer, for which paracentesis was performed three times. Pregnancy was achieved. Throughout antenatal examinations, bilateral ovaries were enlarged. She delivered a healthy baby by cesarean section at term. However, 1 month after delivery, the bilateral ovary had not shrunk, and levels of tumor markers CA125 and CA199 were 50.84 and 41.34 U/mL, respectively. At laparotomy for suspected malignancy, both adnexae formed “kissing ovaries”, which were multinodulated with yellow serous fluid. Specimens from wedge resection submitted for frozen section showed a benign ovarian cyst. The final pathology report showed bilateral follicle cysts.ConclusionWith the increasing use of gonadotropins in the management of infertility, ovarian enlargement secondary to hyperstimulation is common. Generally, symptoms appear between the 6th and 13th weeks of pregnancy and disappear thereafter. The hyperstimulated ovary often subsides after the first trimester. This case is unusual as the megalocystic ovary persisted after delivery. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of enlarged bilateral ovaries persisting 2 months after delivery
