The role of defense mechanisms in the modulation of anger experience and expression: Gender differences and influence on self-report measures
Based on the background that defense mechanisms might contaminate personality evaluation measures,
the present study was performed with the aim of verifying the influence of defense mechanisms on a selfevaluation
instrument for anger.
A total of 100 healthy subjects (44 males and 56 females) completed the STAXI – State-Trait Anger
Expression Inventory and the DMI – Defense Mechanisms Inventory.
Data were analyzed through t test for independent samples, correlation analysis (PearsonÂ’s correlation
coefficients), and stepwise regression models. The means for anger experience and expression resulted all in
the normal range and no gender differences were observed; no gender differences were found in the use of
defense mechanisms. The interference of defense mechanisms on anger self-evaluation was more prominent
in males. In both sexes, TAO predicts anger experience and expression.
The ‘‘contamination’’ of self-report data by defense mechanisms can lead to oversimplified, unrealistic
models of human behavior. The assessment of defense mechanisms associated to self-report instruments
may conduce to a more realistic evaluation of anger

Lifetime psychiatric comorbidity and diagnostic trajectories in an Italian psychiatric sample
Objective: Comorbidity in psychiatric patients has been widely examined in the literature, enucleating the role in misinterpretation of symptom’s root in a multi-dis-ease background, as well as the impact on the quality of life, outcome, and health-care effects. This research aimed to examine, in an Italian population of psychiatric patients, the diagnostic continuum in the context of lifetime psychiatric comorbidity, assessing possible differences related to the onset disorder. Method: A retrospective analysis of medical records of 458 subjects, in which various psychiatric diagnoses were represented and categorized in 16 nosographic classes, was conducted. Results: Results showed that “Bipolar disorder” (22.06%) was the most fre-quent diagnosis, “Eating disorder” had the earliest age onset (Mean age years = 16 ± 1.41), and “Schizophrenia” showed the longest disease duration (Mean years = 24.20±12.76). Moreover, 54,4% of the final sample presented at least one psychiatric comorbidity in disease history, while “Other personality disorders” was the most comorbidity-associated diagnosis, representing 29% of all the cases with more than 3 past diagnoses. Heterotypic transition was observed in fairly all considered onset diagnoses, exception made for “Schizophrenia” with 75% of the subjects showing homotypic progression. Conclusions: Our results suggest a tendency to make multiple diagnoses over psychiatric patients' lifetime in the majority of cases, often escaping from the original onset nosographic domain. More generally, our findings agree with a broad consensus that describes psychiatric symptomatic dimensions rather overlapped and correlated with each other, leading to a more transdiagnostic clinical approach
Tree rings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) as a source of information about past climate in northern Poland
Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is a very common tree in Polish forests, and therefore was widely used as timber. A relatively large amount of available wood allowed a long-term chronology to be built up and used as a source of information about past climate. The analysis of reconstructed indexed values of mean temperature in 51-year moving intervals allowed the recognition of the coldest periods in the years 1207–1346, 1383–1425, 1455–1482, 1533–1574, 1627–1646, and 1694–1785. The analysis of extreme wide and narrow rings forms a complementary method of examining climatic data within tree rings. The tree ring widths, early wood and late wood widths of 16 samples were assessed during the period 1581–1676. The most apparent effect is noted in the dry summer of 1616. According to previous research and our findings, temperature from February to March seems to be one of the most stable climatic factors which influenced pine growth in Poland. Correlation coefficients in the calibration and validation procedure gave promising results for temperature reconstruction from the pine chronology

A Molecular Characterization of the Allelic Expression of the BRCA1 Founder Δ9–12 Pathogenic Variant and Its Potential Clinical Relevance in Hereditary Cancer:International Journal of Molecular Sciences
Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome is a genetic condition that increases the risk of breast cancer by 80% and that of ovarian cancer by 40%. The most common pathogenic variants (PVs) causing HBOC occur in the BRCA1 gene, with more than 3850 reported mutations in the gene sequence. The prevalence of specific PVs in BRCA1 has increased across populations due to the effect of founder mutations. Therefore, when a founder mutation is identified, it becomes key to improving cancer risk characterization and effective screening protocols. The only founder mutation described in the Mexican population is the deletion of exons 9 to 12 of BRCA1 (BRCA1Δ9–12), and its description focuses on the gene sequence, but no transcription profiles have been generated for individuals who carry this gene. In this study, we describe the transcription profiles of cancer patients and healthy individuals who were heterozygous for PV BRCA1Δ9–12 by analyzing the differential expression of both alleles compared with the homozygous BRCA1 control group using RT–qPCR, and we describe the isoforms produced by the BRCA1 wild-type and BRCA1Δ9–12 alleles using nanopore long-sequencing. Using the Kruskal–Wallis test, our results showed a similar transcript expression of the wild-type allele between the healthy heterozygous group and the homozygous BRCA1 control group. An association between the recurrence and increased expression of both alleles in HBOC patients was also observed. An analysis of the sequences indicated four wild-type isoforms with diagnostic potential for discerning individuals who carry the PV BRCA1Δ9–12 and identifying which of them has developed cancer
No systematic effects of sampling direction on climate-growth relationships in a large-scale, multi-species tree-ring data set
Ring-width series are important for diverse fields of research such as the study of past climate, forest ecology, forest genetics, and the determination of origin (dendro-provenancing) or dating of archaeological objects. Recent research suggests diverging climate-growth relationships in tree-rings due to the cardinal direction of extracting the tree cores (i.e. direction-specific effect). This presents an understudied source of bias that potentially affects many data sets in tree-ring research. In this study, we investigated possible direction-specific growth variability based on an international (10 countries), multi-species (8 species) tree-ring width network encompassing 22 sites. To estimate the effect of direction-specific growth variability on climate-growth relationships, we applied a combination of three methods: An analysis of signal strength differences, a Principal Component Gradient Analysis and a test on the direction-specific differences in correlations between indexed ring-widths series and climate variables. We found no evidence for systematic direction-specific effects on tree radial growth variability in high-pass filtered ring-width series. In addition, direction-specific growth showed only marginal effects on climate-growth correlations. These findings therefore indicate that there is no consistent bias caused by coring direction in data sets used for diverse dendrochronological applications on relatively mesic sites within forests in flat terrain, as were studied here. However, in extremely dry, warm or cold environments, or on steep slopes, and for different life-forms such as shrubs, further research is advisable.</p
