Conservation and restoration of UNESCO sites and built heritage in the sultanate of Oman. Practical activities and analytical models of the structural behaviour

    Get PDF
The present study aims to analyse several examples of built heritage and criteria of consolidation from the technological, scientific, numerical and practical points of view, taking account of the peculiarities of these kind of works and the many subjects involved. In particular, two different UNESCO sites have been investigated: the Archaeological sites of Khor Rori (directed by Prof. A. Avanzini) and of Al Balid (directed by Prof. Juris Zarins), both of them in the south of the Sultanate. They represent two very different examples of restoration practice of archaeological masonry, thus requiring differentiated approaches. Since January 2005, a staff of engineers from the Department of Structural Engineering (Università di Pisa) has arranged the programme of structural consolidation of the site of Khor Rori during the archaeological campaigns. The project and related activities have been set up within The Office of The Advisor of His Majesty The Sultan for Cultural Affairs and have been extended to the site of Al-Balid since January 2007. Thanks to this opportunity it has been possible to develop PhD activities both under theoretical (numerical model and limit state analysis) and practical aspects. Field work activities took place within a multicultural scenario and particular care has been addressed to the training of the non-specialised manpower. Finally, the study is extended to the study of earthen architecture as an important document of the history and culture of several countries, which represent a huge part of built heritage especially in the dry regions of the Middle East. After a brief overview of the historical, social, geographical and climatic features that influenced these kinds of constructions, the present dissertation ends with the analysis of technical aspects and causes of damage of a real case study. It brings together surveys and observations of several vernacular villages of the northern mountainous plateau of the Sultanate. Useful application of the stability of no tension masonry piers with limited compressive resistance have also been discussed, leaving interesting prospectives for further researches and scientific investigation

The South-South trade offers a wide spectrum of opportunities for developing countries, given the complementary feature existing and the underexploitation of trade among the economies in the hemisphere. For the purpose of taking advantage of those opportunities, in June 2004, the third round of negotiations of the Global System of Trade Preferences (Sistema Global de Preferencias Comerciales - GSTP) among Developing Countries, a mechanism created by the G-77 in 1982 to promote the South-South trade, was launched in Sao Paulo (UNCTAD XI United Nations Conference on Trade and Development). In this paper, the impact that a broadening of the GSTP agreement may have on the Argentine trade is estimated by using different approaches: i) quantification of the trade that is currently performed under the generalized system of trade preferences (GSTP) among developing countries (PEDs); ii) general equilibrium estimation of the impact of a liberalization of trade among developing countries; iii) analysis of the trade complementarity among the GSTP countries; and iv) partial equilibrium estimation of the impact of a liberalization of trade among developing countries in such key sectors as agriculture, textile, among others

Some models of ecogeographic speciation explaining the herpetological diversity of the Andean-Patagonian region

    Get PDF
Four populational models of geographic speciation are discussed. A first tentative model points out several basaltic tablelands along the extra-Andean territory, standing lengthy periods of geological and climatic diastrophisms from the late Tertiary. A very high rate of endemic forms can be emphasised for such biota, inhabiting very restrictive ecosystems along each plateau. These isolated formations constitute reliable refuges or neo-dispersal centres, of peculiar biocenoses such in the case of lizards (Liolaemus, Phymaturus) and anurans (Atelognathus). On the other hand, the distribution pattern showed by the widespread central populations of Liolaemus darwinii and the several peripherally opposite but phyletically related species could be supported by the so-called "centrifugal speciation" model. It suggests a probable speciation process following a centrifugal progression, which involves opposite phases of contraction and expansion of the populations. That could be in agreement with an expected accumulation of genetic differences between some isolated peripheral remnants and the wide radiating centre of ancestral populations. The "invading dune" model can be applied to the distribution ranges of several sand-dwelling species of lizards belonging to "Liolaemus wiegmannii group". From ancient postglacial precursors, an interposed ecological barrier of aeolean dunes and sandbanks could have favoured morphological changes that independently characterised the population evolution and the geographic isolation of these phyletically related sand-lizard species. The "vanishing refuge" model as a mechanism for ecogeographic speciation may explain the actual distribution of lizards of the Pristidactylus genus. From a primitive common ancestor inhabiting large forest, continuously deteriorated, over time some disjoined populations remained in isolated refuges. Subsequently they could have acquired several preadaptations to environments of more open, dry, rocky and shrubby formations, evolving towards the differentiated taxa actually recognised.Fil: Scolaro, Jose Alejandro.
