Thinking politics sociologically - The Daily Life of the Professional Politician between Innovation and Determinism
Abstract: The aim of my essay is to present some reflections on the possibility of thinking politics sociologically, from the point of view of a sociologist of everyday-life. During more than one year of ethnographic research on the field, I followed sixteen politicians in Calabria (south of Italy), eleven men and five women, using theshadowing technique and interviews. I will, here, attempt to resume some results of my enquiry, focusing in particular on the relation between innovation and determinism, as it comes out from the everyday actions of the political agents. Referring to the socialtheory of Pierre Bourdieu and to his analysis of the political field, I will underline how this latter influences practically the political agents. The internal dynamics in the political field seem to firmly bind the politicians and by consequence these latter appearto be forced to lay down experience and innovation. Their behaviour and their actions are determined by the political field’s logic and they seem compelled to act and take the world for granted. It appears therefore that there is no space for imagination in the professional politician’s everyday-life. The political field seems to spread an inescapable determinism

Molecular Gas, Dust and Star Formation in Galaxies: II. Dust properties and scalings in \sim\ 1600 nearby galaxies
We aim to characterize the relationship between dust properties. We also aim
to provide equations to estimate accurate dust properties from limited
observational datasets.
We assemble a sample of 1,630 nearby (z<0.1) galaxies-over a large range of
Mstar, SFR - with multi-wavelength observations available from wise, iras,
planck and/or SCUBA. The characterization of dust emission comes from SED
fitting using Draine & Li dust models, which we parametrize using two
components (warm and cold ). The subsample of these galaxies with global
measurements of CO and/or HI are used to explore the molecular and/or atomic
gas content of the galaxies.
The total Lir, Mdust and dust temperature of the cold component (Tc) form a
plane that we refer to as the dust plane. A galaxy's sSFR drives its position
on the dust plane: starburst galaxies show higher Lir, Mdust and Tc compared to
Main Sequence and passive galaxies. Starburst galaxies also show higher
specific Mdust (Mdust/Mstar) and specific Mgas (Mgas/Mstar). The Mdust is more
closely correlated with the total Mgas (atomic plus molecular) than with the
individual components. Our multi wavelength data allows us to define several
equations to estimate Lir, Mdust and Tc from one or two monochromatic
luminosities in the infrared and/or sub-millimeter.
We estimate the dust mass and infrared luminosity from a single monochromatic
luminosity within the R-J tail of the dust emission, with errors of 0.12 and
0.20dex, respectively. These errors are reduced to 0.05 and 0.10 dex,
respectively, if the Tc is used. The Mdust is correlated with the total Mism
(Mism \propto Mdust^0.7). For galaxies with Mstar 8.5<log(Mstar/Msun) < 11.9,
the conversion factor \alpha_850mum shows a large scatter (rms=0.29dex). The SF
mode of a galaxy shows a correlation with both the Mgass and Mdust: high
Mdust/Mstar galaxies are gas-rich and show the highest SFRs.Comment: 24 pages, 28 figures, 6 tables, Accepted for publication in A&
Mindful violence? Responses to the Rambo series' shifting aesthetic of aggression
Rambo (2008) marked the return of Sylvester Stallone's iconic action hero. What is most striking about the fourth film (as the response from reviewers testifies), is its graphic violence. My intention here is to critically engage with Rambo (2008) as rewriting the series' established aesthetic of violence. My overarching aim is to highlight how the popular press has sought to read the 2008 version of Rambo according to the discursive narratives surrounding Stallone's 1980s action films. The negative response to Rambo, I argue, stems from relying on critical patterns that do not fit the film itself
Treatment of vesico-ureteral reflux in infants and children using endoscopic approaches
Abstract
Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) represents one of the most significant risk factors for acute pyelonephritis in children. Endoscopic treatment of VUR dates back to 1981 when Matouschek first described injection of the ureteral orifice in an attempt to correct VUR. In addition, also Politano and colleagues and McDonald described successful correction of reflux using endoscopic techniques. After these reports subureteral Teflon injection (STING) came to be appreciated as a viable new way to less invasively correct one of the most common pediatric urologic problems. The technique is technically easy to perform and is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. It is performed in general anesthesia in children and may require repeat injections, particularly in patients with high-grade reflux. As for endoscopic technique, a main problem existed. The success in children with high grade reflux was less than reported for open or laparoscopic reimplant techniques. However, in the past 10 years, newer products have become available that are changing the indications for endoscopic correction. In these review, we analyzed the papers published in the literature on this topic to give to the readers an updated overview about the results of endoscopic treatment of VUR after 30-years of his first description
