    Molecular Gas, Dust and Star Formation in Galaxies: II. Dust properties and scalings in \sim\ 1600 nearby galaxies

    We aim to characterize the relationship between dust properties. We also aim to provide equations to estimate accurate dust properties from limited observational datasets. We assemble a sample of 1,630 nearby (z<0.1) galaxies-over a large range of Mstar, SFR - with multi-wavelength observations available from wise, iras, planck and/or SCUBA. The characterization of dust emission comes from SED fitting using Draine & Li dust models, which we parametrize using two components (warm and cold ). The subsample of these galaxies with global measurements of CO and/or HI are used to explore the molecular and/or atomic gas content of the galaxies. The total Lir, Mdust and dust temperature of the cold component (Tc) form a plane that we refer to as the dust plane. A galaxy's sSFR drives its position on the dust plane: starburst galaxies show higher Lir, Mdust and Tc compared to Main Sequence and passive galaxies. Starburst galaxies also show higher specific Mdust (Mdust/Mstar) and specific Mgas (Mgas/Mstar). The Mdust is more closely correlated with the total Mgas (atomic plus molecular) than with the individual components. Our multi wavelength data allows us to define several equations to estimate Lir, Mdust and Tc from one or two monochromatic luminosities in the infrared and/or sub-millimeter. We estimate the dust mass and infrared luminosity from a single monochromatic luminosity within the R-J tail of the dust emission, with errors of 0.12 and 0.20dex, respectively. These errors are reduced to 0.05 and 0.10 dex, respectively, if the Tc is used. The Mdust is correlated with the total Mism (Mism \propto Mdust^0.7). For galaxies with Mstar 8.5<log(Mstar/Msun) < 11.9, the conversion factor \alpha_850mum shows a large scatter (rms=0.29dex). The SF mode of a galaxy shows a correlation with both the Mgass and Mdust: high Mdust/Mstar galaxies are gas-rich and show the highest SFRs.Comment: 24 pages, 28 figures, 6 tables, Accepted for publication in A&

    Pediatric Endoscopic Pilonidal Sinus Treatment: An Effective Procedure for Children with Recurrent Pilonidal Sinus Disease after Failed Open Surgery

    Background: The traditional open excision of pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is associated with a painful postoperative course and high recurrence rates. We recently published our technique of pediatric endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (PEPSiT). We aimed to report our long-term outcome including using PEPSiT for recurrent PSD after failed open repair. Methods: All patients with recurrent PSD after open excision who underwent PEPSiT in our unit over the past 2 years were included in the study. During surgery a fistuloscope was introduced through the fistula's orifice. All identifiable hairs were removed using endoscopic forceps. Thereafter, the cavity was debrided with endobrush and ablated with monopolar electrode. External openings were not closed. Results: In the past 2 years, 40 patients with PSD underwent PEPSiT. Ten of 40 patients (6 boys and 4 girls with an average age of 16.8 years [range = 14-18]) had recurrent PSD after open surgery and were included in the study. The average operative time was 27.7 minutes (range = 24-43). No perioperative complications occurred. The average analgesic requirement was 20 hours (range = 16-26) and the average hospitalization was 22.4 hours (range = 18-36). The average time to return to full daily activities was 2.3 days (range = 1-5) and all patients were highly satisfied of postoperative course. At 1 month postoperatively, the external openings were completely healed. No recurrence was recorded at a mean follow-up of 18 months (range = 6-24). Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that PEPSiT is an excellent technique for surgical treatment of PSD in children and teenagers. In fact, it is technically easy and fast to perform, with a short and painless hospital stay and it allows to the operated patients an early return to full daily activities without any physical limitations compared with open repair. In addition, it is also effective for treatment of recurrent PSD after failed open repair

    Technical standardization of MIS management of children with pilonidal sinus disease using pediatric endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (PEPSiT) and laser epilation

    This study aimed to standardize the technique of pediatric endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (PEPSiT) associated with laser epilation. METHODS: All pediatric patients presenting with acute or chronic pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) who underwent PEPSiT in our institution over a 36-month period (July 2015-July 2018), were included in the study. Pre- and postoperative management, recurrence rate, postoperative pain, hospital stay, analgesic requirements, and patient satisfaction levels were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 59 patients (23 girls and 36 boys) underwent PEPSiT during the study period. Ten/59 patients (16.9%) had recurrent PSD after open repair, and 4/59 (6.7%) presented a concomitant pilonidal cyst. All children underwent laser epilation pre- and postoperatively over the last 15 months. The average length of surgery was 27.5 min (range 20-45). The average pain score during the first 48 postoperative hours was 2.7 (range 2-5), and the average analgesic requirement was 20 h (range 16-24). The average hospitalization was 22.4 h (range 18-36). At 1 month postoperatively, external openings were healed in all patients. During follow-up, 1 recurrence (1.6%) was recorded and successfully re-treated with PEPSiT. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that PEPSiT represents the technique of choice for treatment of PSD in the pediatric population.     Clinical application and technical standardization of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging in pediatric minimally invasive surgery

    Purpose We reported our preliminary experience using ICG fluorescence in pediatric minimally invasive surgery (MIS) with the aim to standardize indications, dose, timing, and modality of administration of ICG according to different organs. Methods ICG technology was adopted in 46 MIS procedures performed in our unit over the last 18 months: 30 left varicocele repairs; 5 cholecystectomies in obese adolescents; 3 tumor excisions; 3 nephrectomies; 2 partial nephrectomies; 3 lymphoma excisions. ICG solution was injected intravenously in all cases except for varicocelectomy in which it was injected into the testis. The ICG injection was performed intra-operatively in all cases except for cholecystectomy in which it was injected 18 h prior to the procedure. Results All procedures were completed laparoscopically without conversions or intra-operative complications. No adverse or allergic reactions to ICG were reported. Conclusion Our preliminary experience showed that ICG fluorescence is a safe, useful, and versatile technique to adopt in pediatric MIS to achieve a better identification of anatomy and an easier surgical dissection or resection in challenging cases. Currently, the main indications are varicocelectomy, difficult cholecystectomy, tumor excision, nephrectomy, and partial nephrectomy. The main limitation is the needing of a special equipment to use ICG technology

    The Evolution of Environmental Quenching Timescales to z1.6z\sim1.6

    Using a sample of 4 galaxy clusters at 1.35<z<1.651.35 < z < 1.65 and 10 galaxy clusters at 0.85<z<1.350.85 < z < 1.35, we measure the environmental quenching timescale, tQt_Q, corresponding to the time required after a galaxy is accreted by a cluster for it to fully cease star formation. Cluster members are selected by a photometric-redshift criterion, and categorized as star-forming, quiescent, or intermediate according to their dust-corrected rest-frame colors and magnitudes. We employ a "delayed-then-rapid" quenching model that relates a simulated cluster mass accretion rate to the observed numbers of each type of galaxy in the cluster to constrain tQt_Q. For galaxies of mass M1010.5 MM_* \gtrsim 10^{10.5}~ \mathrm{M}_\odot, we find a quenching timescale of tQ=t_Q= 1.24 Gyr in the z1.5z\sim1.5 cluster sample, and tQ=t_Q= 1.50 Gyr at z1z\sim1. Using values drawn from the literature, we compare the redshift evolution of tQt_Q to timescales predicted for different physical quenching mechanisms. We find tQt_Q to depend on host halo mass such that quenching occurs over faster timescales in clusters relative to groups, suggesting that properties of the host halo are responsible for quenching high-mass galaxies. Between z=0z=0 and z=1.5z=1.5, we find that tQt_Q evolves faster than the molecular gas depletion timescale and slower than an SFR-outflow timescale, but is consistent with the evolution of the dynamical time. This suggests that environmental quenching in these galaxies is driven by the motion of satellites relative to the cluster environment, although due to uncertainties in the atomic gas budget at high redshift, we cannot rule out quenching due to simple gas depletion

    Apologies of the Rich and Famous: Cultural, Cognitive, and Social Explanations of Why We Care and Why We Forgive

    In recent years, U.S. and other Western media have inundated the public with celebrity apologies. The public (measured via representative opinion polls) then expresses clear ideas about who deserves forgiveness. Is forgiveness highly individualized or tied to broader social, cultural, and cognitive factors? To answer this question, we analyzed 183 celebrity apologies offered between October 1, 2000, and October 1, 2012. Results are twofold and based in both cultural and social psychological perspectives. First, we found that public forgiveness is systematically tied to discursive characteristics of apologies—particularly sequential structures. Certain sequences appear to cognitively prime the public, creating associative links to established cultural scripts of atonement and rendering some apologies more successful than others. Second, public forgiveness is contingent on broader patterns of social interaction. Like many persuasive messages, successful apologies exist as ordered cultural moments steeped in characteristics of the social relations that bind offenders, victims, and a broader audience of onlookers

    Coming Together: New Taxonomies for the Analysis of Social Relations

    In previous work, we have noted a certain rigidity in sociology\u27s approach to the topic of social relations (Cerulo 1997; Cerulo and Ruane 1997; Cerulo, Ruane, and Chayko 1992). With few exceptions, literature on the subject dichotomizes social relations with reference to the scope of the interaction (small group versus large group) and the mode by which social actors connect (direct connections versus mediated connections). Further, many researchers implicitly rank the social value of each relational form. Sociologists typically identify a society\u27s primary and most valuable relations as the result of direct, physically copresent exchange, exchange involving relatively few interactants. In contrast, secondary relations often are characterized as faceless, impersonal, ingenuous, and fleeting–the result of large‐group exchange established via mediated or mechanized connections. Cerulo (1997) suggested the need to reformulate any definition of social relations built upon the small group/large group or the direct/mediated dichotomies. She presented several critical elements upon which new definitions could be built. In this piece, we configure those elements, building six new analytic taxonomies–tools we hope will provoke a richer discussion of connecting, interacting, and resulting forms of social relations
