Characterization of symmetry-protected topological phases in polymerized models by trajectories of Majorana stars
By using Majorana's stellar representation, we give a clear geometrical
interpretation of the topological phases of inversion-symmetric polymerized
models by mapping the Bloch states of multi-band systems to Majorana stars on
the Bloch sphere. While trajectories of Majorana stars of a filled Bloch band
exhibit quite different geometrical structures for topologically trivial and
nontrivial phases, we further demonstrate that these structures are uniquely
determined by distributions of Majorana stars of two high-symmetrical momentum
states, which have different parities for topologically different states.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
A nearest level PWM method for the MMC in DC distribution grids
For modular multilevel converters (MMCs) applied to medium-voltage DC distribution grids, using the traditional Nearest Level Modulation (NLM) as in HVDC systems can lead to severe current distortion due to significantly reduced module number. This paper proposes a hybrid modulation method combining NLM and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) where only one module per arm operates under PWM mode. The proposed Nearest Level PWM (NL-PWM) method not only significantly reduces the current distortion, but also avoids the complicated voltage balancing control in each module. The harmonic characteristics of NL-PWM are derived using double Fourier transform, which provides theoretical basis for selecting module number and switching frequency for medium-voltage application in accordance with grid harmonic requirements. Finally, the harmonic characteristics and feasibility of the proposed modulation method are validated by simulation and experimental studies on a MMC with 6 modules per arm. The simulated and experimental results reveal that NL-PWM has better voltage and current harmonic characteristics over NLM and CPS-PWM, thereby suiting the application of MMC with few models
Effects of Hydrogen Plasma on the Electrical Properties of F-Doped ZnO Thin Films and p-i-n -Si:H Thin Film Solar Cells
1.5 wt% zinc fluoride (ZnF2) was mixed with zinc oxide powder to form the F-doped ZnO (FZO) composition. At first, the FZO thin films were deposited at room temperature and 5×10-3 Torr in pure Ar under different deposition power. Hall measurements of the as-deposited FZO thin films were investigated, and then the electrical properties were used to find the deposition power causing the FZO thin films with minimum resistance. The FZO thin films with minimum resistance were further treated by H2 plasma and then found their variations in the electrical properties by Hall measurements. Hydrochloric (HCl) acid solutions with different concentrations (0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.5%) were used to etch the surfaces of the FZO thin films. Finally, the as-deposited, HCl-etched as-deposited, and HCl-etched H2-plasma-treated FZO thin films were used as transparent electrodes to fabricate the p-i-n α-Si:H thin film solar cells and their characteristics were compared in this study. We would show that using H2-plasma-treated and HCl-etched FZO thin films as transparent electrodes would improve the efficiency of the fabricated thin film solar cells

Is carrot consumption associated with a decreased risk of lung cancer? A meta-analysis of observational studies
Findings of epidemiological studies regarding the association between carrot consumption and lung cancer risk remain inconsistent. The present study aimed to summarise the current epidemiological evidence concerning carrot intake and lung cancer risk with a meta-analysis. We conducted a meta-analysis of case–control and prospective cohort studies, and searched PubMed and Embase databases from their inception to April 2018 without restriction by language. We also reviewed reference lists from included articles. Prospective cohort or case–control studies reporting OR or relative risk with the corresponding 95 % CI of the risk lung cancer for the highest compared with the lowest category of carrot intake. A total of eighteen eligible studies (seventeen case–control studies and one prospective cohort study) were included, involving 202 969 individuals and 5517 patients with lung cancer. The pooled OR of eighteen studies for lung cancer was 0·58 (95%CI 0·45, 0·74) by comparing the highest category with the lowest category of carrot consumption. Based on subgroup analyses for the types of lung cancer, we pooled that squamous cell carcinoma (OR 0·52, 95 % CI 0·19, 1·45), small-cell carcinoma (OR 0·43, 95 % CI 0·12, 1·59), adenocarcinoma (OR 0·34, 95 % CI 0·15, 0·79), large-cell carcinoma (OR 0·40, 95 % CI 0·10, 1·57), squamous and small-cell carcinoma (OR 0·85, 95 % CI 0·45, 1·62), adenocarcinoma and large-cell carcinoma (OR 0·20, 95 % CI 0·02, 1·70) and mixed types (OR 0·61, 95 % CI 0·46, 0·81). Exclusion of any single study did not materially alter the pooled OR. Integrated epidemiological evidence from observational studies supported the hypothesis that carrot consumption may decrease the risk of lung cancer, especially for adenocarcinoma
An Algorithm for Preferential Selection of Spectroscopic Targets in LEGUE
We describe a general target selection algorithm that is applicable to any
survey in which the number of available candidates is much larger than the
number of objects to be observed. This routine aims to achieve a balance
between a smoothly-varying, well-understood selection function and the desire
to preferentially select certain types of targets. Some target-selection
examples are shown that illustrate different possibilities of emphasis
functions. Although it is generally applicable, the algorithm was developed
specifically for the LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and
Exploration (LEGUE) survey that will be carried out using the Chinese Guo Shou
Jing Telescope. In particular, this algorithm was designed for the portion of
LEGUE targeting the Galactic halo, in which we attempt to balance a variety of
science goals that require stars at fainter magnitudes than can be completely
sampled by LAMOST. This algorithm has been implemented for the halo portion of
