Photocurable Bioink for the Inkjet 3D Pharming of Hydrophilic Drugs.
Novel strategies are required to manufacture customized oral solid dosage forms for personalized medicine applications. 3D Pharming, the direct printing of pharmaceutical tablets, is an attractive strategy, since it allows for the rapid production of solid dosage forms containing custom drug dosages. This study reports on the design and characterization of a biocompatible photocurable pharmaceutical polymer for inkjet 3D printing that is suitable for hydrophilic active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). Specifically, hyaluronic acid was functionalized with norbornene moieties that, in the presence of poly(ethylene) glycol dithiol, Eosin Y as a photoinitiator, and a visible light source, undergoes a rapid step-growth polymerization reaction through thiol-ene chemistry. The engineered bioink was loaded with Ropinirole HCL, dispensed through a piezoelectric nozzle onto a blank preform tablet, and polymerized. Drug release analysis of the tablet resulted in 60% release within 15 min of tablet dissolution. The study confirms the potential of inkjet printing for the rapid production of tablets through the deposition of a photocurable bioink designed for hydrophilic APIs
Altitude dependence of atmospheric temperature trends: Climate models versus observation
As a consequence of greenhouse forcing, all state of the art general
circulation models predict a positive temperature trend that is greater for the
troposphere than the surface. This predicted positive trend increases in value
with altitude until it reaches a maximum ratio with respect to the surface of
as much as 1.5 to 2.0 at about 200 to 400 hPa. However, the temperature trends
from several independent observational data sets show decreasing as well as
mostly negative values. This disparity indicates that the three models examined
here fail to account for the effects of greenhouse forcings.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
The GALEX View of "Boyajian's Star" (KIC 8462852)
The enigmatic star KIC 8462852, informally known as "Boyajian's Star", has
exhibited unexplained variability from both short timescale (days) dimming
events, and years-long fading in the Kepler mission. No single physical
mechanism has successfully explained these observations to date. Here we
investigate the ultraviolet variability of KIC 8462852 on a range of timescales
using data from the GALEX mission that occurred contemporaneously with the
Kepler mission. The wide wavelength baseline between the Kepler and GALEX data
provides a unique constraint on the nature of the variability. Using 1600
seconds of photon-counting data from four GALEX visits spread over 70 days in
2011, we find no coherent NUV variability in the system on 10-100 second or
months timescales. Comparing the integrated flux from these 2011 visits to the
2012 NUV flux published in the GALEX-CAUSE Kepler survey, we find a 3% decrease
in brightness for KIC 8462852. We find this level of variability is
significant, but not necessarily unusual for stars of similar spectral type in
the GALEX data. This decrease coincides with the secular optical fading
reported by Montet & Simon (2016). We find the multi-wavelength variability is
somewhat inconsistent with typical interstellar dust absorption, but instead
favors a R = 5.0 0.9 reddening law potentially from circumstellar

What you know can influence what you are going to know (especially for older adults)
Stimuli related to an individual's knowledge/experience are often more memorable than abstract stimuli, particularly for older adults. This has been found when material that is congruent with knowledge is contrasted with material that is incongruent with knowledge, but there is little research on a possible graded effect of congruency. The present study manipulated the degree of congruency of study material with participants’ knowledge. Young and older participants associated two famous names to nonfamous faces, where the similarity between the nonfamous faces and the real famous individuals varied. These associations were incrementally easier to remember as the name-face combinations became more congruent with prior knowledge, demonstrating a graded congruency effect, as opposed to an effect based simply on the presence or absence of associations to prior knowledge. Older adults tended to show greater susceptibility to the effect than young adults, with a significant age difference for extreme stimuli, in line with previous literature showing that schematic support in memory tasks particularly benefits older adults
Finding Spanning Trees in Strongly Connected Graphs with Per-Vertex Degree Constraints
In this project, I sought to develop and prove new algorithms to create spanning trees on general graphs with per-vertex degree constraints. This means that each vertex in the graph would have some additional value, a degree constraint d. For a spanning tree to be correct, every vertex vi in the spanning tree must have a degree exactly equal to a degree constraint di. This poses an additional constraint on what would otherwise be a trivial spanning tree problem. In this paper, two proofs related to my studies will be discussed and analyzed, leading to my algorithm for determining a spanning tree on strongly connected graphs. It is my hope that in the future this algorithm can be modified to apply to the general case
Queer Medical Humanities
This chapter reviews a range of scholarship working at the intersection of queer theory and critical medical humanities in 2022 and 2023 under the following headings: 1. HIV/AIDS; 2. Healthcare Environments; 3. Trans Health Studies; and 4. Bioethics. The chapter sets out emergent movements within queer medical humanities and articulates how scholars utilise queer theory and analysis to encourage critical change within medical and healthcare theory and practice. The chapter provides a baseline for understanding how queer theory is adapted to interdisciplinary studies, especially in the UK and Europ
