    A Novel Two-Component Response Regulator Links rpfwith Biofilm Formation and Virulence of Xanthomonasaxonopodis pv. Citri

    Citrus bacterial canker caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri is a serious disease that impacts citrus productionworldwide, and X. axonopodis pv. citri is listed as a quarantine pest in certain countries. Biofilm formation is important forthe successful development of a pathogenic relationship between various bacteria and their host(s). To understand themechanisms of biofilm formation by X. axonopodis pv. citri strain XW19, the strain was subjected to transposonmutagenesis. One mutant with a mutation in a two-component response regulator gene that was deficient in biofilmformation on a polystyrene microplate was selected for further study. The protein was designated as BfdR for biofilmformation defective regulator. BfdR from strain XW19 shares 100% amino acid sequence identity with XAC1284 of X.axonopodis pv. citri strain 306 and 30–100% identity with two-component response regulators in various pathogens andenvironmental microorganisms. The bfdR mutant strain exhibited significantly decreased biofilm formation on the leafsurfaces of Mexican lime compared with the wild type strain. The bfdR mutant was also compromised in its ability to causecanker lesions. The wild-type phenotype was restored by providing pbfdR in trans in the bfdR mutant. Our data indicatedthat BfdR did not regulate the production of virulence-related extracellular enzymes including amylase, lipase, protease, andlecithinase or the expression of hrpG, rfbC, and katE; however, BfdR controlled the expression of rpfF in XVM2 medium,which mimics cytoplasmic fluids in planta. In conclusion, biofilm formation on leaf surfaces of citrus is important for cankerdevelopment in X. axonopodis pv. citri XW19. The process is controlled by the two-component response regulator BfdR viaregulation of rpfF, which is required for the biosynthesis of a diffusible signal factor

    Stepwise quantized surface states and delayed Landau level hybridization in Co cluster-decorated BiSbTeSe2 topological insulator devices

    In three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs), the nontrivial topology in their electronic bands casts a gapless state on their solid surfaces, using which dissipationless TI edge devices based on the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and quantum Hall (QH) effect have been demonstrated. Practical TI devices present a pair of parallel-transport topological surface states (TSSs) on their top and bottom surfaces. However, due to the no-go theorem, the two TSSs always appear as a pair and are expected to quantize synchronously. Quantized transport of a separate Dirac channel is still desirable, but has never been observed in graphene even after intense investigation over a period of 13 years, with the potential aim of half-QHE. By depositing Co atomic clusters, we achieved stepwise quantization of the top and bottom surfaces in BiSbTeSe2 (BSTS) TI devices. Renormalization group flow diagrams13, 22 (RGFDs) reveal two sets of converging points (CVPs) in the (Gxy, Gxx) space, where the top surface travels along an anomalous quantization trajectory while the bottom surface retains 1/2 e2/h.     Action Mechanisms of Du-Huo-Ji-Sheng-Tang on Cartilage Degradation in a Rabbit Model of Osteoarthritis

    Du-Huo-Ji-Sheng-Tang (DHJST) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine used to treat osteoarthritis. In the present study, the therapeutic effect of DHJST on cartilage degradation in a rabbit model of osteoarthritis was investigated. In the knee joints of rabbits, anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) was performed to induce experimental osteoarthritis. At the end of the sixth week, 30 rabbits with ACLT were divided into six groups, control group, DHJST group and Osaminethacine (OSA) group, which were followed for another 4 weeks. The other three groups of rabbits with ACLT were untreated with DHJST or OSA, which were sacrificed after 6 weeks, and served as 6-week time point controls. Results indicated that at the end of the sixth week after surgery, there was a significantly histological degeneration in the control group compared with the normal group. In the control group, the mean score for histological degeneration were further increases at 10th week, and there was a significantly lower mean score for histological degeneration in the DHJST group compared with the control group. To research the potential mechanism, the expression level of VEGF and HIF-1α were detected. The expression of VEGF mRNA and HIF-1α mRNA are low in normal group, while the activities increase gradually in the control group. However, compared to that of the same time point model group, activity of VEGF and HIF-1α decreased significantly in DHJST group. In conclusion, DHJST exerts significant therapeutic effect on osteoarthritis rabbits, and mechanisms are associated with inhibition of VEGF and HIF-1α expression

    Sustainable recycling of intact carbon fibres from end-of-service-life composites

    A novel method is developed to reclaim carbon fibres from carbon fabric-reinforced cementitious composites. The method takes advantage of an electrically driven chemical reaction in the presence of an aqueous electrolyte solution and an electrical current. This paper presents an experimental programme to investigate the effects of the applied current density, the sodium chloride and nitric acid concentrations in the solution and the temperatures. Both tensile strengths and interfacial shear strengths of the reclaimed carbon fibres were evaluated. Microstructural analyses on the morphologies of the reclaimed carbon fibres were also performed. The proposed method is simple, environmentally friendly and efficient. This method has no size limits on the recycled composites, which indicates the suitability of this approach for large-scale industrial applications. The reclaimed carbon fibres are found to be intact and believed to have great commercial value since the recycling process did not damage their strengths or reduce their dimensions

    Cognitive motor interference for gait and balance in stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: An increasing interest in the potential benefits of cognitive motor interference (CMI) for stroke has recently been observed, but the efficacy of CMI for gait and balance is controversial. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was performed to estimate the effect of CMI on gait and balance in patients with stroke. METHODS: Articles in Medline, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, PEDro and the China Biology Medicine disc were searched from 1970 to July 2014. Only randomized controlled trials examining the effects of CMI for patients with stroke were included, and no language restrictions were applied. Main outcome measures included gait and balance function. RESULTS: A total of 15 studies composed of 395 participants met the inclusion criteria, and 13 studies of 363 participants were used as data sources for the meta-analysis. Pooling revealed that CMI was superior to the control group for gait speed [mean difference (MD) 0.19 m/s, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.06, 0.31), P = 0.003], stride length [MD 12.53 cm, 95% CI (4.07, 20.99), P = 0.004], cadence [MD 10.44 steps/min, 95% CI (4.17, 16.71), P = 0.001], centre of pressure sway area [MD −1.05, 95% CI (−1.85, −0.26), P = 0.01] and Berg balance scale [MD 2.87, 95% CI (0.54, 5.21), P = 0.02] in the short term. CONCLUSION: Cognitive motor interference is effective for improving gait and balance function for stroke in the short term. However, only little evidence supports assumptions regarding CMI's long-term benefits

    Search For Heavy Pointlike Dirac Monopoles

    We have searched for central production of a pair of photons with high transverse energies in ppˉp\bar p collisions at s=1.8\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV using 70pb170 pb^{-1} of data collected with the D\O detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994--1996. If they exist, virtual heavy pointlike Dirac monopoles could rescatter pairs of nearly real photons into this final state via a box diagram. We observe no excess of events above background, and set lower 95% C.L. limits of 610,870,or1580GeV/c2610, 870, or 1580 GeV/c^2 on the mass of a spin 0, 1/2, or 1 Dirac monopole.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
