Niełatwa archeologia klifów – przypadek stanowisk w Bagiczu
The following paper presents the problem of archaeological sites located on cliffs on the Southern Baltic Sea shore. This article discusses issues related to a necessity of solving the problem of this kind of research, related to methodological, as well as documentation and preservation standards based on preliminary results of the project conducted in Bagicz area (Ustronie Morskie commune). In this region four new structures were noted on a cliff surface. The key to understand the situation of archaeological sites located on a cliff areas is the knowledge of the processes related to their formation and activity. All of them have a huge impact for the state of preservation of the cliff, however they have various intensity level depending on the part of the Baltic Coast. The following paper presents the problem of archaeological sites located on cliffs on the Southern Baltic Sea shore. Czy jesteśmy „społeczeństwem honoru”? Rekonstrukcja pojęcia honoru w wybranych orzeczeniach polskich sądów
The existence of honour as a particular value is not unique, restricted to the boundaries of certain states, nationalities or ethnicities only. Yet, a distinction can be found in the literature between so-called ‘societies of honour’ and ‘modernised societies’. It is believed that in ‘societies of honour’ honour plays a central role in regulating social relations, and in ‘modernised societies’ based on the rule of law its importance is marginalised. This article is a contribution to the discussion on the adequacy of the discussed division based on the example of Polish society. Due to the fact that an important feature of this distinction is the juxtaposition of law and honour as tools for regulating social relations, the starting point of the analysis of this issue is to answer the question whether the concept of ‘honour’ exists in Polish law, and if so, how it is defined and in what contexts it appears. Due to the complexity of this issue, the subject of the article was limited to a specific problem – the analysis of selected judgments of Polish courts and the reasons underlying these judgments. The research allowed to identify the provisions of Polish law which refer (or could refer) to honour. Based on the analysis made, it may be stated that both, judges as well as parties to court proceedings, consider honour as a protected, legally accepted value.
Emotional agents at the square lattice
We introduce and investigate by numerical simulations a number of models of
emotional agents at the square lattice. Our models describe the most general
features of emotions such as the spontaneous emotional arousal, emotional
relaxation, and transfers of emotions between different agents. Group emotions
in the considered models are periodically fluctuating between two opposite
valency levels and as result the mean value of such group emotions is zero. The
oscillations amplitude depends strongly on probability ps of the individual
spontaneous arousal. For small values of relaxation times tau we observed a
stochastic resonance, i.e. the signal to noise ratio SNR is maximal for a
non-zero ps parameter. The amplitude increases with the probability p of local
affective interactions while the mean oscillations period increases with the
relaxation time tau and is only weakly dependent on other system parameters.
Presence of emotional antenna can enhance positive or negative emotions and for
the optimal transition probability the antenna can change agents emotions at
longer distances. The stochastic resonance was also observed for the influence
of emotions on task execution efficiency.Comment: 28 pages, 19 figures, 3 table
Negative emotions boost users activity at BBC Forum
We present an empirical study of user activity in online BBC discussion
forums, measured by the number of posts written by individual debaters and the
average sentiment of these posts. Nearly 2.5 million posts from over 18
thousand users were investigated. Scale free distributions were observed for
activity in individual discussion threads as well as for overall activity. The
number of unique users in a thread normalized by the thread length decays with
thread length, suggesting that thread life is sustained by mutual discussions
rather than by independent comments. Automatic sentiment analysis shows that
most posts contain negative emotions and the most active users in individual
threads express predominantly negative sentiments. It follows that the average
emotion of longer threads is more negative and that threads can be sustained by
negative comments. An agent based computer simulation model has been used to
reproduce several essential characteristics of the analyzed system. The model
stresses the role of discussions between users, especially emotionally laden
quarrels between supporters of opposite opinions, and represents many observed
statistics of the forum.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figure
Spreading of diseases through comorbidity networks across life and gender
The state of health of patients is typically not characterized by a single
disease alone but by multiple (comorbid) medical conditions. These
comorbidities may depend strongly on age and gender. We propose a specific
phenomenological comorbidity network of human diseases that is based on medical
claims data of the entire population of Austria. The network is constructed
from a two-layer multiplex network, where in one layer the links represent the
conditional probability for a comorbidity, and in the other the links contain
the respective statistical significance. We show that the network undergoes
dramatic structural changes across the lifetime of patients.Disease networks
for children consist of a single, strongly inter-connected cluster. During
adolescence and adulthood further disease clusters emerge that are related to
specific classes of diseases, such as circulatory, mental, or genitourinary
disorders. For people above 65 these clusters start to merge and highly
connected hubs dominate the network. These hubs are related to hypertension,
chronic ischemic heart diseases, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. We
introduce a simple diffusion model to understand the spreading of diseases on
the disease network at the population level. For the first time we are able to
show that patients predominantly develop diseases which are in close
network-proximity to disorders that they already suffer. The model explains
more than 85 % of the variance of all disease incidents in the population. The
presented methodology could be of importance for anticipating age-dependent
disease-profiles for entire populations, and for validation and of prevention
schemes.Comment: 14 pages,5 figure
Dynamics of the segetal flora of the eastern part of the Gniezno Lake District
Wydano przy pomocy finansowej Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego oraz Komitetu Badań NaukowychThe present report describes changes in the species composition of
the segetal flora during 143 years of geobotanical research. The analysis is based
on historical sources of information and the author presents floristic releves were
taken in the field. In the area 2114 km² of segetal habitats, 1795 floristic releves
were taken, which enabled creating a collection of 37 391 floristic data possible.
The work concerns a region that has been intensively colonized since the remotest
time because it is the cradle of our statehood. At present it is an area of increased
farm production. An attempt to define the synanthropodynamic state of the segetal
flora in this area was made. Special attention was paid to directly endangered weeds
(E) and potentially endangered weeds (PE).Zadanie pt. Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki nr 885/P-DUN/2014 zostało dofinansowane ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę
