    Determination of the phase diagram of the electron doped superconductor Ba(Fe1x_{1-x}Cox_x)2_2As2_2

    Systematic measurements of the resistivity, heat capacity, susceptibility and Hall coefficient are presented for single crystal samples of the electron-doped superconductor Ba(Fe1x_{1-x}Cox_x)2_2As2_2. These data delineate an xTx-T phase diagram in which the single magnetic/structural phase transition that is observed for undoped BaFe2_2As2_2 at 134 K apparently splits into two distinct phase transitions, both of which are rapidly suppressed with increasing Co concentration. Superconductivity emerges for Co concentrations above x0.025x \sim 0.025, and appears to coexist with the broken symmetry state for an appreciable range of doping, up to x0.06x \sim 0.06. The optimal superconducting transition temperature appears to coincide with the Co concentration at which the magnetic/structural phase transitions are totally suppressed, at least within the resolution provided by the finite step size between crystals prepared with different doping levels. Superconductivity is observed for a further range of Co concentrations, before being completely suppressed for x0.018x \sim 0.018 and above. The form of this xTx-T phase diagram is suggestive of an association between superconductivity and a quantum critical point arising from suppression of the magnetic and/or structural phase transitions

    We report quantum oscillation measurements that enable the direct observation of the Fermi surface of the low temperature ground state of \ba122. From these measurements we characterize the low energy excitations, revealing that the Fermi surface is reconstructed in the antiferromagnetic state, but leaving itinerant electrons in its wake. The present measurements are consistent with a conventional band folding picture of the antiferromagnetic ground state, placing important limits on the topology and size of the Fermi surface.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Probing the reaction pathway in (La_(0.8)Sr_(0.2))_(0.95)MnO_(3+δ) using libraries of thin film microelectrodes

    Libraries of (La_(0.8)Sr_(0.2))_(0.95)MnO_(3+δ) (LSM) thin film microelectrodes with systematically varied thickness or growth temperature were prepared by pulsed laser deposition, and a novel robotic instrument was used to characterize these libraries in automated fashion by impedance spectroscopy. The measured impedance spectra are found to be described well by an electrochemical model based on a generalized transmission model for a mixed conducting oxide, and all trends are consistent with a reaction pathway involving oxygen reduction over the LSM surface followed by diffusion through the film and into the electrolyte substrate. The surface activity is found to be correlated with the number of exposed grain boundary sites, which decreases with either increasing film thickness (at constant growth temperature) or increasing film growth temperature (at constant thickness). These findings suggest that exposed grain boundaries in LSM films are more active than exposed grains towards the rate-limiting surface process, and that oxygen ion diffusion through polycrystalline LSM films is faster than many prior studies have concluded

    Exceptional power density and stability at intermediate temperatures in protonic ceramic fuel cells

    Over the past several years, important strides have been made in demonstrating protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). Such fuel cells offer the potential of environmentally sustainable and cost-effective electric power generation. However, their power outputs have lagged behind predictions based on their high electrolyte conductivities. Here we overcome PCFC performance and stability challenges by employing a high-activity cathode, PrBa_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(1.5)Fe_(0.5)O_(5+δ) (PBSCF), in combination with a chemically stable electrolyte, BaZr_(0.4)Ce_(0.4)Y_(0.1)Yb_(0.1)O_3 (BZCYYb4411). We deposit a thin dense interlayer film of the cathode material onto the electrolyte surface to mitigate contact resistance, an approach which is made possible by the proton permeability of PBSCF. The peak power densities of the resulting fuel cells exceed 500 mW cm^(−2) at 500 °C, while also offering exceptional, long-term stability under CO_2

    Postdigital Videogames Literacies: Thinking With, Through, and Beyond James Gee’s Learning Principles

    This article is a collective response to the 2003 iteration of James Paul Gee’s What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy. Gee’s book, a foundational text for those working in game studies, literacy studies, and education, identified 36 principles of ‘good learning’ which he argued were built into the design of good games, and which have since been used to unsettle the landscape of formal education. This article brings together 21 short theoretical and empirical contributions which centre postdigital perspectives to re-engage with, and extend, the arguments first raised by Gee regarding the relationship between videogames and learning. Organised into five groups, these contributions suggest that concepts and attitudes associated with the postdigital offer new thinking tools for challenging grand narrative claims about the educative potential of technologies while also providing rich analytical frames for revisiting Gee’s claims in terms of postdigital videogame literacies
