HI Properties of Low Luminosity Star-Forming Galaxies in the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey
New HI observations are presented for a complete sample of 109 low luminosity
star-forming galaxies taken from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey
(KISS), the first CCD-based wide-field objective-prism survey for emission-line
galaxies. This sample consists of all star-forming galaxies with M_B > -18.0
and cz < 11,000 km/s from the first Halpha-selected survey list. Overall, 97
out of 109 galaxies have been detected in HI. We confirm the weak trend of
increasing gas richness with decreasing luminosity found by previous authors.
Gas richness is also shown to be weakly anti-correlated with metallicity. The
dependence of star formation rates (SFRs) and HI gas depletion timescales on
metallicity is examined. The median solar metallicity based SFR and gas
depletion timescale are 0.1639 M_sun/yr and 5 Gyrs, respectively. Corrections
for variations in metallicity decreases SFRs by about 0.5 dex and increases gas
depletion timescales by an average of about 8 Gyrs. The majority of galaxies in
this sample still have large reservoirs of HI gas, and despite their large
current star formation rates, could have formed stars in a quasi-continuous
manner for a Hubble time. Finally, we present the first HI mass function for
low luminosity star-forming galaxies and show that this subpopulation
contributes 10-15% of the overall HI density in the local universe. We conclude
that if the HI mass function of the Universe does indeed have a steeply rising
low-mass slope as suggested by previous authors, it is not due to the

A combined spectroscopic and photometric stellar activity study of Epsilon Eridani
We present simultaneous ground-based radial velocity (RV) measurements and
space-based photometric measurements of the young and active K dwarf Epsilon
Eridani. These measurements provide a data set for exploring methods of
identifying and ultimately distinguishing stellar photospheric velocities from
Keplerian motion. We compare three methods we have used in exploring this data
set: Dalmatian, an MCMC spot modeling code that fits photometric and RV
measurements simultaneously; the FF method, which uses photometric
measurements to predict the stellar activity signal in simultaneous RV
measurements; and H analysis. We show that our H measurements
are strongly correlated with photometry from the Microvariability and
Oscillations of STars (MOST) instrument, which led to a promising new method
based solely on the spectroscopic observations. This new method, which we refer
to as the HH method, uses H measurements as input into the FF
model. While the Dalmatian spot modeling analysis and the FF method with
MOST space-based photometry are currently more robust, the HH method only
makes use of one of the thousands of stellar lines in the visible spectrum. By
leveraging additional spectral activity indicators, we believe the HH method
may prove quite useful in disentangling stellar signals
Multichannel cold collisions between metastable Sr atoms
We present a multichannel scattering calculation of elastic and inelastic
cold collisions between two low-field seeking, metastable ^{88}Sr [(5s5p)
^3P_2] atoms in the presence of an external magnetic field. The scattering
physics is governed by strong anisotropic long-range interactions, which lead
to pronounced coupling among the partial waves of relative motion. As a result,
nonadiabatic transitions are shown to trigger a high rate of inelastic losses.
At relatively high energies, T > 100 mkK, the total inelastic collision rate is
comparable with the elastic rate. However, at lower collisional energy, the
elastic rate decreases, and at T ~ 1mkK, it becomes substantially smaller than
the inelastic rate. Our study suggests that magnetic trapping and evaporative
cooling of ^{88}Sr [(5s5p) ^3P_2] atoms, as well as ^{40}Ca [(4s4p) ^3P_2], in
low-field seeking states will prove difficult to achieve experimentally.Comment: 4 pages, Latex, Submitte
Cleaning fouled membranes using sludge enzymes
Maintenance of membrane performance requires inevitable cleaning or "defouling" of fouled membranes. Membrane cleaning using sludge enzymes, was investigated by first characterising ostrich abattoir effluent for potential foulants, such as lipids, proteins and polysaccharides. Static fouling of polysulphone membranes using abattoir effluent was also performed. Biochemical analysis was performed using quantitative and qualitative methods for detection of proteins on fouled and defouled membranes. The ability of sulphidogenic proteases to remove proteins adsorbed on polysulphone membranes and capillary ultrafiltration membranes after static fouling, and ability to restore permeate fluxes and transmembrane pressure after dynamic fouling was also investigated. Permeate volumes were analysed for protein and amino acids concentrations. The abattoir effluent contained 553 μg/ml of lipid, 301 μg/ml of protein, 141 μg/ml of total carbohydrate, and 0.63 μg/ml of total reducing sugars. Static fouled membranes removed 23.4percent of proteins. Defouling of dynamically fouled capillary ultrafiltration membranes using sulphidogenic proteases was successful at pH 10, 37°C, within 1 h. Estimating Fault Friction from Seismic Signals in the Laboratory
Nearly all aspects of earthquake rupture are controlled by the friction along
the fault that progressively increases with tectonic forcing, but in general
cannot be directly measured. We show that fault friction can be determined at
any time, from the continuous seismic signal. In a classic laboratory
experiment of repeating earthquakes, we find that the seismic signal follows a
specific pattern with respect to fault friction, allowing us to determine the
fault's position within its failure cycle. Using machine learning, we show that
instantaneous statistical characteristics of the seismic signal are a
fingerprint of the fault zone shear stress and frictional state. Further
analysis of this fingerprint leads to a simple equation of state quantitatively
relating the seismic signal power and the friction on the fault. These results
show that fault zone frictional characteristics and the state of stress in the
surroundings of the fault can be inferred from seismic waves, at least in the

Arsenic speciation in saliva of acute promyelocytic leukemia patients undergoing arsenic trioxide treatment
Arsenic trioxide has been successfully used as a therapeutic in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Detailed monitoring of the therapeutic arsenic and its metabolites in various accessible specimens of APL patients can contribute to improving treatment efficacy and minimizing arsenic-induced side effects. This article focuses on the determination of arsenic species in saliva samples from APL patients undergoing arsenic treatment. Saliva samples were collected from nine APL patients over three consecutive days. The patients received 10 mg arsenic trioxide each day via intravenous infusion. The saliva samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Monomethylarsonous acid and monomethylmonothioarsonic acid were identified along with arsenite, dimethylarsinic acid, monomethylarsonic acid, and arsenate. Arsenite was the predominant arsenic species, accounting for 71.8 % of total arsenic in the saliva. Following the arsenic infusion each day, the percentage of methylated arsenicals significantly decreased, possibly suggesting that the arsenic methylation process was saturated by the high doses immediately after the arsenic infusion. The temporal profiles of arsenic species in saliva following each arsenic infusion over 3 days have provided information on arsenic exposure, metabolism, and excretion. These results suggest that saliva can be used as an appropriate clinical biomarker for monitoring arsenic species in APL patients. [Figure: see text
Prophylactic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for the prevention of macular oedema after cataract surgery.
BACKGROUND: Macular oedema (MO) is the accumulation of extracellular fluid in the central retina (the macula). It may occur after cataract surgery and may give rise to poor visual outcome, with reduced visual acuity and distortion of the central vision. MO is often self-limiting with spontaneous resolution, but a small proportion of people with chronic persistent MO may be difficult to treat. Chronic oedema may lead to the formation of cystic spaces in the retina termed 'cystoid macular oedema' (CMO). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used in cataract surgery and may reduce the chances of developing MO. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review is to answer the question: is there evidence to support the prophylactic use of topical NSAIDs either in addition to, or instead of, topical steroids postoperatively to reduce the incidence of macular oedema (MO) and associated visual morbidity. SEARCH METHODS: We searched a number of electronic databases including CENTRAL, MEDLINE and Embase. Date last searched 2 September 2016. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in which adult participants had undergone surgery for age-related cataract. We included participants irrespective of their baseline risk of MO, in particular we included people with diabetes and uveitis. We included trials of preoperative and/or postoperative topical NSAIDs in conjunction with postoperative topical steroids. The comparator was postoperative topical steroids alone. A secondary comparison was preoperative and/or postoperative topical NSAIDs alone versus postoperative topical steroids alone. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently selected studies for inclusion, assessed risk of bias and extracted data using standard methods expected by Cochrane. We pooled data using a random-effects model. We graded the certainty of the evidence using GRADE and considered the following: risk of bias of included studies, precision of the effect estimate, consistency of effects between studies, directness of the outcome measure and publication bias. MAIN RESULTS: We identified 34 studies that were conducted in the Americas, Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean region and South-East Asia. Over 5000 people were randomised in these trials. The majority of studies enrolled one eye per participant; a small subset (4 trials) enrolled a proportion of people with bilateral surgery. Twenty-eight studies compared NSAIDs plus steroids with steroids alone. Six studies compared NSAIDs with steroids. A variety of NSAIDs were used, including ketorolac, diclofenac, nepafenac, indomethacin, bromfenac, flurbiprofen and pranopfen. Follow-up ranged from one to 12 months. In general, the studies were poorly reported. We did not judge any of the studies at low risk of bias in all domains. Six studies were funded by industry, seven studies were funded from non-industry sources, and the rest of the studies did not report the source of funding.There was low-certainty evidence that people receiving topical NSAIDs in combination with steroids may have a lower risk of poor vision due to MO at three months after cataract surgery compared with people receiving steroids alone (risk ratio (RR) 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.23 to 0.76; eyes = 1360; studies = 5; I2 = 5%). We judged this to be low-certainty evidence because of risk of bias in the included studies and indirectness, as the extent of visual loss was not always clear. Only one study reported poor vision due to MO at 12 months and we judged this to be very low-certainty evidence as there were only two events. Quality of life was only reported in one of the 34 studies comparing NSAIDs plus steroids versus steroids alone, and it was not fully reported, other than to comment on lack of differences between groups. There was evidence of a reduced risk of MO with NSAIDs at three months after surgery, but we judged this to be low-certainty due to risk of bias and publication bias (RR 0.40, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.49; eyes = 3638; studies = 21). There was inconsistent evidence on central retinal thickness at three months (I2 = 87%). Results ranged from -30.9 µm in favour of NSAIDs plus steroids to 7.44 µm in favour of steroids alone. Similarly, data on best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were inconsistent, but nine out of 10 trials reporting this outcome found between-group differences in visual acuity of less than 0.1 logMAR.None of the six studies comparing NSAIDs alone with steroids reported on poor vision due to MO at three or 12 months. There was low-certainty evidence that central retinal thickness was lower in the NSAIDs group at three months (mean difference (MD) -22.64 µm, 95% CI -38.86 to -6.43; eyes = 121; studies = 2). Five studies reported on MO and showed a reduced risk with NSAIDs, but we judged this evidence to be of low-certainty (RR 0.27, 95% CI 0.18 to 0.41; eyes = 520). Three studies reported BCVA at three months and the results of these trials were inconsistent, but all three studies found differences of less than 0.1 logMAR between groups.We did not note any major adverse events - the main consistent observation was burning or stinging sensation with the use of NSAIDs. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Using topical NSAIDs may reduce the risk of developing macular oedema after cataract surgery, although it is possible that current estimates as to the size of this reduction are exaggerated. It is unclear the extent to which this reduction has an impact on the visual function and quality of life of patients. There is little evidence to suggest any important effect on vision after surgery. The value of adding topical NSAIDs to steroids, or using them as an alternative to topical steroids, with a view to reducing the risk of poor visual outcome after cataract surgery is therefore uncertain. Future trials should address the remaining clinical uncertainty of whether prophylactic topical NSAIDs are of benefit, particularly with respect to longer-term follow-up (at least to 12 months), and should be large enough to detect reduction in the risk of the outcome of most interest to patients, which is chronic macular oedema leading to visual loss
Black hole masses and enrichment of z ~ 6 SDSS quasars
We present sensitive near-infrared spectroscopic observations for a sample of
five z ~ 6 quasars. These are amongst the most distant, currently known quasars
in the universe. The spectra have been obtained using ISAAC at the VLT and
include the CIV, MgII and FeII lines. We measure the FeII/MgII line ratio, as
an observational proxy for the Fe/alpha element ratio. We derive a ratio of
2.7+/-0.8 for our sample, which is similar to that found for lower redshift
quasars, i.e., we provide additional evidence for the lack of evolution in the
FeII/MgII line ratio of quasars up to the highest redshifts. This result
demonstrates that the sample quasars must have undergone a major episode of
iron enrichment in less than one Gyr and star formation must have commenced at
z > 8. The linewidths of the MgII and CIV lines give two estimates for the
black hole masses. A third estimate is given by assuming that the quasars emit
at their Eddington luminosity. The derived masses using these three methods
agree well, implying that the quasars are not likely to be strongly lensed. We
derive central black hole masses of 0.3-5.2 10^9 solar masses. We use the
difference between the redshift of MgII (a proxy for the systemic redshift of
the quasar) and the onset of the Gunn Peterson trough to derive the extent of
the ionized Stromgren spheres around our target quasars. The derived physical
radii are about five Mpc. Using a simple ionization model, the emission of the
central quasars would need of order 10^6-10^8 year to create these cavities in
a surrounding intergalactic medium with a neutral fraction between 0.1 and 1.0.
As the e-folding time scale for the central accreting black hole is on the
order of a few times 10^7 year, it can grow by one e-folding or less within
