Evaluation of An Oral Health Education Session for Early Head Start Home Visitors
Objectives
Home visiting programs promote the education and health of Early Head Start (EHS) children and pregnant women. However, EHS\u27s oral health component is unevenly implemented. We conducted an educational intervention to improve oral health knowledge and motivational interviewing techniques among Wisconsin EHS home visitors. Methods
A questionnaire assessing oral health-related knowledge and confidence was administered to home visitors before and after an educational session. Changes between pre/post-responses were analyzed with McNemar\u27s test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. Results
After the intervention there were increases in both knowledge and confidence related to oral health communication. Knowledge increases were observed in such topics as fluoridation, dental caries, and caregivers’ role in assisting and supervising children\u27s tooth brushing. Conclusions
A brief educational intervention was associated with increased home visitor knowledge and confidence in communicating oral health messages to EHS caregivers and pregnant women
Intersession Reliability and Within-Session Stability of a Novel Perception-Action Coupling Task
BACKGROUND: The perception-action coupling task (PACT) was designed as a more ecologically valid measure of alertness/reaction times compared to currently used measures by aerospace researchers. The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability, within-subject variability, and systematic bias associated with the PACT. METHODS: There were 16 subjects (men/women = 9/7; age = 27.8 +/- 3.6 yr) who completed 4 identical testing sessions. The PACT requires subjects to make judgements on whether a virtual ball could fit into an aperture. For each session, subjects completed nine cycles of the PACT, with each cycle lasting 5 min. Judgement accuracy and reaction time parameters were calculated for each cycle. Systematic bias was assessed with repeated-measures ANOVA, reliability with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), and within-subject variability with coefficients of variation (CVTE). RESULTS: Initiation time (Mean = 0.1065 s) showed the largest systematic bias, requiring the elimination of three cycles to reduce bias, with all other variables requiring, at the most, one. All variables showed acceptable reliability (ICC > 0.70) and within-subject variability (CVTE <20%) with only one cycle after elimination of the first three cycles. CONCLUSIONS: With a three-cycle familiarization period, the PACT was found to be reliable and stable
Ireland’s unseen majority – microbial diversity of the seabed
Despite their size, prokaryote (bacteria and archaea) biomass is estimated to represent between 15 and 30% of total living biomass1,2. Prokaryotes play major roles in marine ecosystems and in global biogeochemical cycling3,4. Molecular phylogenetic approaches have revolutionised microbiology and have revealed that the complexity of microbial life is orders of magnitude greater than previous estimates based on cultivation-based approaches5. This highlights how little we currently know about the microbial world and the clear potential of this vast untapped resource for human application. Here we present the first in-depth analysis of microbial community diversity and composition in the Irish Sea. The western Irish Sea is characterised by distinct hydrographic conditions, resulting in summer stratified offshore deeper waters and settling of fine mud, while well-mixed waters and coarser sediment type dominate in the south and coastal regions. Hydrographic controls on marine organic matter fate and microbial diversity in the western Irish Sea
Cycling of organic matter (OM) is the key biological process in the marine environment and knowledge of the sources and the reactivity of OM, in addition to factors controlling its distribution in estuarine, coastal and shelf sediments are of key importance for understanding global biogeochemical cycles. With recent advances in cultivation-independent molecular approaches to microbial ecology, the key role of prokaryotes in global biogeochemical cycling in marine ecosystems has been emphasised. However, spatial studies combining the distribution and fate of OM with microbial community abundance and diversity remain rare. Here, a combined spatial lipid biomarker and 16S rRNA tagged pyrosequencing study was conducted in surface sediments and particulate matter across hydrographically distinct zones associated with the seasonal western Irish Sea gyre. The aim was to assess the spatial variation of, and factors controlling, marine organic cycling and sedimentary microbial communities across these distinct zones. The distribution of phospholipid fatty acids, source-specific sterols, wax esters and C25 highly branched isoprenoids indicate that diatoms, dinoflagellates and green algae were the major contributors of marine organic matter, while the distribution of cholesterol, wax esters and C20 and C22 polyunsaturated fatty acids have highlighted the importance of copepod grazing for mineralizing organic matter in the water column5. This marine OM production and mineralisation was greatest in well-mixed waters compared to offshore stratified waters. Lipid analysis and 16S rRNA PCR-DGGE profiling also suggests that sedimentary bacterial abundance increases while community diversity decreases in offshore stratified waters. The major bacterial classes are the Deltaproteobacteria, Clostridia, Flavobacteriia, Gammaproteobactera and Bacteroiidia. At the family/genus level most groups appear to be associated with organoheterotrophic processing of sedimentary OM, ranging from degradation of complex organic matter (e.g. Tepidibacter sp.) to sulfur-dependent utilisation of simple organic molecules (e.g. Desulfobulbaceae and Desulfuromonadaceae)
Collinear laser spectroscopy of atomic cadmium
Hyperfine structure and factors of the atomic transition are determined from collinear
laser spectroscopy data of Cd and Cd. Nuclear
magnetic moments and electric quadrupole moments are extracted using reference
dipole moments and calculated electric field gradients, respectively. The
hyperfine structure anomaly for isotopes with and nuclear
ground states and isomeric states is evaluated and a linear
relationship is observed for all nuclear states except . This
corresponds to the Moskowitz-Lombardi rule that was established in the mercury
region of the nuclear chart but in the case of cadmium the slope is
distinctively smaller than for mercury. In total four atomic and ionic levels
were analyzed and all of them exhibit a similar behaviour. The electric field
gradient for the atomic level is derived from
multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations in order to evaluate the
spectroscopic nuclear quadrupole moments. The results are consistent with those
obtained in an ionic transition and based on a similar calculation.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Simulations of Mixed Morphology Supernova Remnants With Anisotropic Thermal Conduction
We explore the role of anisotropic thermal conduction on the evolution of
supernova remnants through interstellar media with a range of densities via
numerical simulations. We find that a remnant expanding in a dense environment
can produce centre-bright hard x-ray emission within 20 kyr, and centre-bright
soft x-ray emission within 60 kyr of the supernova event. In a more tenuous
environment, the appearance of a centre-bright structure in hard x-rays is
delayed until about 60 kyr. The soft x-ray emission from such a remnant may not
become centre bright during its observable lifetime. This can explain the
observations that show that mixed-morphology supernova remnants preferentially
occur close to denser, molecular environments. Remnants expanding into denser
environments tend to be smaller, making it easier for thermal conduction to
make larger changes in the temperatures of their hot gas bubbles. We show that
the lower temperatures make it very favorable to use high-stage ions as
diagnostics of the hot gas bubbles in SNRs. In particular, the distribution of
O VIII transitions from shell-bright at early epochs to centre-bright at later
epochs in the evolution of an SNR expanding in a dense ISM when the physics of

Quantum energy inequalities and local covariance II: Categorical formulation
We formulate Quantum Energy Inequalities (QEIs) in the framework of locally
covariant quantum field theory developed by Brunetti, Fredenhagen and Verch,
which is based on notions taken from category theory. This leads to a new
viewpoint on the QEIs, and also to the identification of a new structural
property of locally covariant quantum field theory, which we call Local
Physical Equivalence. Covariant formulations of the numerical range and
spectrum of locally covariant fields are given and investigated, and a new
algebra of fields is identified, in which fields are treated independently of
their realisation on particular spacetimes and manifestly covariant versions of

Quantum inequalities and `quantum interest' as eigenvalue problems
Quantum inequalities (QI's) provide lower bounds on the averaged energy
density of a quantum field. We show how the QI's for massless scalar fields in
even dimensional Minkowski space may be reformulated in terms of the positivity
of a certain self-adjoint operator - a generalised Schroedinger operator with
the energy density as the potential - and hence as an eigenvalue problem. We
use this idea to verify that the energy density produced by a moving mirror in
two dimensions is compatible with the QI's for a large class of mirror
trajectories. In addition, we apply this viewpoint to the `quantum interest
conjecture' of Ford and Roman, which asserts that the positive part of an
energy density always overcompensates for any negative components. For various
simple models in two and four dimensions we obtain the best possible bounds on
the `quantum interest rate' and on the maximum delay between a negative pulse
and a compensating positive pulse. Perhaps surprisingly, we find that - in four
dimensions - it is impossible for a positive delta-function pulse of any
magnitude to compensate for a negative delta-function pulse, no matter how

Special topic: The association between pulse ingredients and canine dilated cardiomyopathy: addressing the knowledge gaps before establishing causation.
In July 2018, the Food and Drug Administration warned about a possible relationship between dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs and the consumption of dog food formulated with potatoes and pulse ingredients. This issue may impede utilization of pulse ingredients in dog food or consideration of alternative proteins. Pulse ingredients have been used in the pet food industry for over 2 decades and represent a valuable source of protein to compliment animal-based ingredients. Moreover, individual ingredients used in commercial foods do not represent the final nutrient concentration of the complete diet. Thus, nutritionists formulating dog food must balance complementary ingredients to fulfill the animal's nutrient needs in the final diet. There are multiple factors that should be considered, including differences in nutrient digestibility and overall bioavailability, the fermentability and quantity of fiber, and interactions among food constituents that can increase the risk of DCM development. Taurine is a dispensable amino acid that has been linked to DCM in dogs. As such, adequate supply of taurine and/or precursors for taurine synthesis plays an important role in preventing DCM. However, requirements of amino acids in dogs are not well investigated and are presented in total dietary content basis which does not account for bioavailability or digestibility. Similarly, any nutrient (e.g., soluble and fermentable fiber) or physiological condition (e.g., size of the dog, sex, and age) that increases the requirement for taurine will also augment the possibility for DCM development. Dog food formulators should have a deep knowledge of processing methodologies and nutrient interactions beyond meeting the Association of American Feed Control Officials nutrient profiles and should not carelessly follow unsubstantiated market trends. Vegetable ingredients, including pulses, are nutritious and can be used in combination with complementary ingredients to meet the nutritional needs of the dog
Selling Graduation: Higher Education and the Loaning of Liberation
While the costs to attend college continue to rise exponentially, a bachelor’s degree is held up as required for economic stability within the U.S. and across the globe. With drastic disparities in earning potentials after graduation reduced by racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ableism, and related structural disparities, the value of a degree continues to be questioned, especially for historically marginalized communities. As the loan industrial complex continues to profit off of students, President Biden has offered $10,000 in student loan relief for some borrowers, though this action has been blocked by federal courts and is currently on hold. Whether Biden’s loan forgiveness comes to fruition or not, student loans remain an overwhelming burden, impacting capacity to accrue wealth, sustain economically, engage in family planning, or emerge from poverty. This conceptual analysis thus challenges the reliance on loans and future debt to fund higher education, connecting author financing narratives within structures designed to continue wealth extraction from communities of color. The paper concludes by arguing beyond student loan forgiveness to center an anti-capitalist purpose of higher education, based upon reparations and free college as sustainable pathways from an extractive higher education system
