Cocoon viability and evidence for delayed hatching by the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris in a laboratory-based study.
Clitellate Lumbricus terrestris, obtained from 5 commercial suppliers (A-E) and also field collected (F) - grassland in Preston, Lancashire, UK, were kept under controlled environmental conditions (15 °C and 24 h darkness) in a sterilised loam soil and surface-fed with horse manure. Survival, biomass and cocoon production was monitored every 4 weeks over 1 y. Collected cocoons were maintained in water-filled Petri dishes on filter paper. Time to hatch and cocoon viability was recorded over a 2 y period. Cocoon production ranged from 15.1 – 32.2 ind.-1 y-1. Cocoon production was initially low followed by a period of high production (12-36 weeks) and then fell (36-52 weeks). Time for cocoon hatching ranged from 132-731 days. Hatching success after 2 years was 58–90% across treatments, with a total viability (including cocoons dissected after the 2 year period) of 88-94%. Evidence of 2 distinct hatching peaks was recorded, separated by a period of approximately 12 months in treatments of most of the commercially obtained earthworms. Cocoon incubation periods are in excess of those previously recorded under similar laboratory conditions (e.g. 90–280 days). Furthermore, viability is also higher than previously recorded (e.g. 67.9–83%). These differences are mainly attributable to the extended length of cocoon observation. Origin, age, unknown pre-treatment (in A-E) and experimental conditions (e.g. a constant temperature regime) may have influenced incubation times. However, it is suggested that asynchronous and delayed hatching within cohorts and ability for cocoons to remain viable for extended periods allows this K-selected species to maximise reproductive potential. This proposed “bet-hedging” strategy is worthy of further laboratory and field-based investigation
Parametric CubeSat flight simulation architecture
This paper presents the architecture of a system of models that provides realistic simulation of the dynamic, in-orbit behaviour of a CubeSat. Time-dependent relationships between sub-systems and between the satellite and external nodes (ground stations and celestial bodies) are captured through numerical analysis of a multi-disciplinary set of state variables including position, attitude, stored energy, stored data and system temperature. Model-Based Systems Engineering and parametric modelling techniques are employed throughout to help visualise the models and ensure flexibility and expandability. Operational mode states are also incorporated within the design, allowing the systems engineer to assess flight behaviour over a range of mission scenarios. Finally, both long and short term dynamics are captured using a coupled-model philosophy; described as Lifetime and Operations models. An example mission is analysed and preliminary results are presented as an illustration of early capabilities
Electromagnetic Compatibility Considerations for International Space Station Payload Developers
The International Space Station (ISS) is a laboratory for scientific research, innovative technology development, and global education. The ISS provides a number of facilities and platforms for payload developers and investigators to conduct biological, microgravity, and Earth and space observation science, as well as for performing technology development. Due to the unique nature of the ISS vehicle and its electrical power and data systems, achieving electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) with the vehicle requires special considerations by the payload developer. The ISS electromagnetic interference (EMI) requirements and test methods are based on MIL-STD-461, Electromagnetic Emissions and Susceptibility Requirements for the Control of Electromagnetic Interference, Revision C, and MIL-STD-462, Electromagnetic Interference Characteristics, Measurement of, respectively. The low source impedance of the test setup requires special considerations when designing or selecting EMI power filters and switched mode power supplies. Many filters, suited for later revisions of MIL-STD-461, will result in non-compliant designs. ISS electrical power system power quality requirements, imposed to protect the stability of the system, can also affect EMI filter design. The selection and use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment for ISS applications requires special considerations to meet both EMC and crew safety requirements. Furthermore, the ISS environment can provide unique immunity challenges; if the payload developer ignores these challenges, the result is a possible loss of science or impact to technology demonstration. The ISS provides a unique opportunity for the science and technology development community. However, in order to be successful, the payload developer must incorporate special EMC considerations, many of which will be presented

Parenting, temperament, and attachment security as antecedents of political orientation: Longitudinal evidence from early childhood to age 26.
This article examines early childhood antecedents of adults' political orientation. Using longitudinal data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, we investigate associations between parenting beliefs and behaviors, child temperament, and attachment security during early childhood in relation to adult political ideology and party affiliation at age 26 years (N = 1,364). Young children's fearful temperament and anxious attachment security, as well as mothers' authoritarian parenting beliefs in early childhood, predicted conservative political orientations at age 26. Children's abilities to focus attention and avoidant attachment security predicted liberal orientations. These findings provide evidence that multiple aspects of early developmental experience-temperament, parenting, and infant-mother attachment-are associated with later political orientations. Through-life modelling of nano-satellite power system dynamics
This paper presents a multi-fidelity approach to finding optimal, mission-specific power system configurations for CubeSats. The methodology begins with propagation of the orbit elements over the mission lifetime, via a continuous-time model, accounting for orbital perturbations (drag, solar radiation and non-spherical geo-potential). Analytical sizing of the power system is then achieved at discrete long-term intervals, to account for the effects of variations in environmental conditions over the mission life. This sizing is based on worst case power demand and provides inputs to a numerical assessment of the in-flight energy collection for each potential solar array deployment configuration. Finally, two objective functions (minimum deviation about the orbit average power and maximum average power over the entire mission) are satisfied to identify the configurations most suitable for the specific mission requirement. Most Nano-satellites are designed with relatively simple, static-models only and tend to be over-engineered as a result, often leading to a power-limited system. The approach described here aims to reduce the uncertainty in energy collection during flight and provide a robust approach to finding the optimal solution for a given set of mission requirements
Deciphering the role of Epstein-Barr virus in the pathogenesis of T and NK cell lymphoproliferations
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a highly successful herpesvirus, colonizing more than 90% of the adult human population worldwide, although it is also associated with various malignant diseases. Primary infection is usually clinically silent, and subsequent establishment of latency in the memory B lymphocyte compartment allows persistence of the virus in the infected host for life. EBV is so markedly B-lymphotropic when exposed to human lymphocytes in vitro that the association of EBV with rare but distinct types of T and NK cell lymphoproliferations was quite unexpected. Whilst relatively rare, these EBV-associated T and NK lymphoproliferations can be therapeutically challenging and prognosis for the majority of patients is dismal. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the role of EBV in the pathogenesis of these tumours, and the implications for treatment. \ud

An oasis of fertility on a barren island: Earthworms at Papadil, Isle of Rum
The Isle of Rum, Inner Hebrides, has an impoverished earthworm fauna as the soils are generally acidic and nutrient-poor. Species associated with human habitation are found around deserted crofting settlements subjected to “clearances” in the mid-19th century and at Kinloch, where a large volume of fertile soil was imported from the mainland around 1900. Earthworms, and the dew worm Lumbricus terrestris L. in particular, were investigated at Papadil, an abandoned settlement and one of the few locations on Rum where a naturally developed brown earth soil is present. The small (1.5 ha), fertile location is isolated, so was also suitable for field experimentation. Visits over six years allowed dew worm distribution to be assessed within low lying grassland and woodland and also within an adjacent sloping broadleaved woodland. The factors limiting dew worm distribution at the site were investigated with associated translocation to adjacent uninhabited areas. Small scale spatial dynamics were studied with density manipulation and containment experiments where Visual Implant Elastomer marking of individuals was utilised. Translocations from streamside woodland to adjacent grassland was successful over a short period (5 months), but the colonies did not persist over a longer term (5-6 years). Field trials with earthworm tagging were successful, but highest tag recovery rate was 25%. Where adults/sub-adults were removed, recruitment of juveniles was notable. Exceptionally large (>12 g live mass) individuals were found in soils of terraces on wooded slopes, suggesting that dew worms may be long lived at this location, where food is abundant and relatively few terrestrial predators are present
Resource considerate data routing through satellite networks
In many envisaged satellite-based networks, such as constellations or federations, there often exists a desire to reduce data latency, increase delivered data volume, or simply exploit unused resources. A strategy is presented that achieves efficient routing of data, in a store-carry-forward fashion, through satellite networks that exhibit delay- and disruption-tolerant network characteristics. This network-layer protocol, termed Spae, exploits information about the schedule of future contacts between network nodes, because satellite motion is deterministic, along with the capacity of these contacts to route data in such a way as to avoid significant overcommitment of data along a resource limited journey. Results from simulations of a federated satellite system indicate consistent benefit in terms of network performance over other, less-sophisticated, conventional methods, and comparable performance to a packet-optimal, full-knowledge approach
