    Relocation of the Salvador Camarena Burial: Historical and Bioarcheological Investigations of a Mexican Migrant Worker Grave (41MV372) in Maverick County, Texas

    F rom 2011 through 2014, the Texas Department of Transportation collaborated with Prewitt and Associates, Inc., to investigate an isolated grave in a remote area alongside FM 481 in Maverick County, Texas. An initial archeological investigation confirmed that the location was a historic grave, and archival records revealed that it contained the remains of Salvador Camarena, a Mexican citizen who died in Texas in January 1950. Additional research identified Camarena’s son and other family members living in Mexico, California, and Texas. With the family’s permission, the burial remains were exhumed, examined, and reinterred at La Marque Cemetery in Galveston County, Texas, where Camarena’s mother and two sisters are buried. The bioarcheological analysis of the skeletal remains corroborates the historical information. Together, the bioarcheological and historical data provide a rare glimpse into the life and death of a migrant laborer. The burial of one immigrant worker may seem insignificant. However, the Camarena case represents a sad but common theme in the history of migrant labor. Like many before him and even more since, Camarena probably died in a foreign country seeking a means to support his family when traveling to seasonal agricultural work

    Acute Effects of Post-Activation Performance Enhancement Exercises on Army Combat Fitness Test Performance

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing task-specific, post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) strategies, to acutely improve Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) performance. Nineteen ROTC cadets completed two ACFTs, separated by 72 hours. Approximately half (n = 10) completed the traditional “Preparation Drill” as their warm-up prior to the first session and added PAPE warm-up strategies as part of their second session. The other group (n = 9) completed the treatments in the opposite order to facilitate a repeated-measures, crossover design. The participants’ composite ACFT score was used as the primary outcome measure of interest to explore mean difference in a two-way (Time x Treatment), repeated measures ANOVA. There was no interaction [F(1,8) = 0.075, p = 0.79] nor main effect of treatment [F(1,8) = 0.084, p = 0.78]. However, there was a main effect of Time [F(1,8) = 58.87, p \u3c 0.001, d = 0.25] (mean ACFT score ± SD: Session 1 = 527 ± 43, Session 2 = 537 ± 39). The results of this study did not support the use of additional PAPE strategies to improve ACFT performance. However, there was a practice effect when the test was completed twice, separated by 72 hours in those with ACFT experience. The effect of Time was present for ACFT cumulative score, as well as event-level differences in three out of six events. Further research should implement familiarization sessions to minimize a practice effect from influencing results

    High GC bacteria from the genus Streptomyces harbor expansive secondary metabolism. The expression of biosynthetic proteins and the characterization and identification of biological "parts" for synthetic biology purposes from such pathways are of interest. However, the high GC content of proteins from actinomycetes in addition to the large size and multi-domain architecture of many biosynthetic proteins (such as non-ribosomal peptide synthetases; NRPSs, and polyketide synthases; PKSs often called "megasynthases") often presents issues with full-length translation and folding. Here we evaluate a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) from Streptomyces lavenduale, a multidomain "megasynthase" gene that comes from a high GC (72.5%) genome. While a preliminary step in revealing differences, to our knowledge this presents the first head-to-head comparison of codon-optimized sequences versus a native sequence of proteins of streptomycete origin heterologously expressed in E. coli. We found that any disruption in co-translational folding from codon mismatch that reduces the titer of indigoidine is explainable via the formation of more inclusion bodies as opposed to compromising folding or posttranslational modification in the soluble fraction. This result supports that one could apply any refactoring strategies that improve soluble expression in E. coli without concern that the protein that reaches the soluble fraction is differentially folded

    Relative distancing: a grounded theory of how learners negotiate the interprofessional.

    A number of extant educational, psychological and sociological theories have been suggested as possessing utility for interprofessional education (IPE). However, there is limited theory proposed that has been derived directly from data. This article adds to the theoretical toolkit by theorizing from data using constructionist grounded theorizing. This article discusses the grounded theorizing of participants' approaches to IPE and describes the social process of relative distancing, a collection of strategies employed by participants to construct their own professional identities and negotiate their way through interprofessional interactions. The categories of relative distancing are conceptualized as (1) integrating the professional and the interprofessional; (2) constellating and maintaining distance; (3) tensioning and manipulating distance and (4) the dimensions of distance. The first, and most theoretically integrative, category will be discussed in detail here. It was found that participants valued certain learning outcomes over others. They favored learning opportunities that were perceived to be of direct relevance to their own professional development and contributed finite personal resources to these. Resources were committed to those interprofessional learning opportunities where relevance was perceived and the conditions of co-presence (with other professions) and a context for interaction were achieved. The discussion draws links between the data and contemporary discourses of economics and identity

    Ways of Asking, Ways of Telling: A Methodological Comparison of Ethnographic and Research Diagnostic Interviews

    The interpretive understanding that can be derived from interviews is highly influenced by methods of data collection, be they structured or semistructured, ethnographic, clinical, life-history or survey interviews. This article responds to calls for research into the interview process by analyzing data produced by two distinctly different types of interview, a semistructured ethnographic interview and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM, conducted with participants in the Navajo Healing Project. We examine how the two interview genres shape the context of researcher-respondent interaction and, in turn, influence how patients articulate their lives and their experience in terms of illness, causality, social environment, temporality and self/identity. We discuss the manner in which the two interviews impose narrative constraints on interviewers and respondents, with significant implications for understanding the jointly constructed nature of the interview process. The argument demonstrates both divergence and complementarity in the construction of knowledge by means of these interviewing methods

    Abstract P215: Hyperglycemic Rats Have Increased Fetal Demise But Not Hypertension During Pregnancy

    While obesity is a major cause for pregnancy complications including preeclampsia and fetal demise, it is not exactly clear the precise obesity-related metabolic factors that promote these adverse outcomes. Epidemiological studies have pointed toward hyperglycemia as one such factor. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that hyperglycemic rats have hypertension and fetal demise during pregnancy. For this purpose, we utilized the type II diabetic model, the Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat (N=16), compared to normoglycemic Wistar Hannover (WH) rats (N=9), which were maintained on Envigo 8640 standard chow. The GK rat allows for assessment of hyperglycemia on pregnancy without confounding obesity. Maternal fasting glucose levels were significantly greater (P&lt;0.05) in GK (97±8 mg/dL) vs. WH (72±9 mg/dL) rats by gestational day 19. Body weight was lower (P&lt;0.05) in GK (248±4 g) versus WH (289±4 g) pregnant rats, whereas perirenal fat (1.56±0.07 g vs. 1.38±0.07 g, P&gt;0.05) and circulating levels of the adipokine, leptin (1.6±0.2 ng/mL vs. 2.2±0.3 ng/mL, P&gt;0.05) were similar between GK and WH pregnant groups, respectively. Endothelial-dependent relaxation to acetylcholine (sensitivity as logEC50: -5.2±0.3 M vs -5.2±0.4 M) and endothelial-independent relaxation to the nitric oxide-donor sodium nitroprusside (logEC50: -7.2±0.2 M vs. -7.5±0.1 M) were similar (P&gt;0.05) in uterine arteries isolated from GK and WH rats, respectively. It was then determined if reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP)-induced placental ischemia, a significant contributor to the development of preeclampsia, promoted greater maternal hypertension in GK rats. RUPP was conducted on gestational day 14 and blood pressure assessed on day 19. RUPP produced hypertension to a similar extent (P&gt;0.05) in GK (116±5 mmHg vs. Sham 102±5 mmHg) and WH (124±4 mmHg vs. Sham 100±2 mmHg) groups. Blood pressure was similar under Sham conditions. Fetal demise was already greater in Sham GK vs. Sham WH pregnant rats (% absorptions: 13±2 vs. 2±2, P&lt;0.05) but increased similarly following RUPP in GK (61±11 %) and WH (65±5 %) pregnant rats. In conclusion, these data suggest that high glucose levels promote fetal demise during pregnancy but do not exaggerate the outcomes of placental ischemia-induced hypertension.</jats:p
