    A KINEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TAEKWONDO APCHAGI

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinematical characteristics of Apchagi in Taekwondo kicking motion using the techniques of three dimensional cinematographic techniques. Four college athletes were selected as subjects. After analyzing Apchgi motion, it is concluded the followings. In performing Apchagi, the average time was 0.61 ± 0.02 seconds and the center of body moved right-left (X-axis) 3.7 ± 0.8 cm, forward-back (Y-axis) 46.1 ± 4.5 cm, up-down (Z-axis) 14.4 ± 2.4 cm. Y-axis movement showed the biggest scale among these three direction variances because it need to move the body forward to kick the target. In preparing the motion, pelvic angle showed 150.9 ± 1.05° and in kicking motion 118.5 ± 1.28°. Knee's angle was 71.0 ± 1.33° in f1exion motion. On the other hand, Ankle angle was 113.2 ± 1.73° for preparing the motion and 136.1 ± 4.16° for taking off motion. For flexion phase it increased up to 162.1 ± 5.85° and decreased to 150.9 ± 3.50° in kicking motion

In a recent eye-tracking false-belief task, we showed that great apes correctly anticipated that a human actor would search for a goal object where he had last seen it, even though the apes themselves knew that it was no longer there. In response, Heyes proposed that apes' looking behavior was guided not by social cognitive mechanisms but rather domain-general cueing effects, and suggested the use of inanimate controls to test this alternative submentalizing hypothesis. In the present study, we implemented the suggested inanimate control of our previous false-belief task. Apes attended well to key events but showed markedly fewer anticipatory looks and no significant tendency to look to the correct location. We thus found no evidence that submentalizing was responsible for apes' anticipatory looks in our false-belief task.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Concurrent Multilocular Cystic Renal Cell Carcinoma and Leiomyoma in the Same Kidney: Previously Unreported Association

    We present an unusual case of concurrent occurrence of a multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma and a leiomyoma in the same kidney of a patient with no evident clinical symptoms. A 38-year-old man was found incidentally to have a cystic right renal mass on computed tomography. Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy was performed under a preoperative diagnosis of cystic renal cell carcinoma. Histology revealed a multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma and a leiomyoma. This is the first report of this kind of presentation

    Strain-shear coupling in bilayer MoS2

    Layered materials such as graphite and transition metal dichalcogenides have extremely anisotropic mechanical properties owing to orders of magnitude difference between in-plane and out-of-plane interatomic interaction strengths. Although effects of mechanical perturbations on either intra- or inter-layer interactions have been extensively investigated, mutual correlations between them have rarely been addressed. Here we show that layered materials have an inevitable coupling between in-plane uniaxial strain and interlayer shear. Because of this, the uniaxial in-plane strain induces an anomalous splitting of the degenerate interlayer shear phonon modes such that the split shear mode along the tensile strain is not softened but hardened contrary to the case of intralayer phonon modes. We confirm the effect by measuring Raman shifts of shear modes of bilayer MoS2 under strain. Moreover, by analyzing the splitting, we obtain an unexplored off-diagonal elastic constant, demonstrating that Raman spectroscopy can determine almost all mechanical constants of layered materials.Comment: 36 pages, 10 figure

    Proteinuria in a Boy with Infectious Mononucleosis, C1q Nephropathy, and Dent's Disease

    C1q nephropathy is a proliferative glomerulopathy with extensive mesangial deposition of C1q. A three-year old boy presented with a nephrotic-range proteinuria during an acute phase of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, and he had a family history of Dent's disease. The renal biopsy findings were compatible with C1q nephropathy. However, EBV in situ hybridization was negative. The CLCN5 gene analysis revealed an R637X hemizygous mutation, which was the same as that detected in his maternal cousin, the proband of the family. The causal relationship between EBV infection and C1q nephropathy remains to be determined. Moreover, the effects of underlying Dent's disease in the process of C1q nephropathy has to be considered

    Preparation and evaluation of polymeric microparticulates for improving cellular uptake of gemcitabine

These high doses can have severe adverse effects.Methods: In this study, polymeric microparticulate systems of gemcitabine were prepared using chitosan as a mucoadhesive polymer and Eudragit L100-55 as an enteric copolymer. The physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties of the resulting systems were then evaluated.Results: There was no endothermic peak for gemcitabine in any of the polymeric gemcitabine microparticulate systems, suggesting that gemcitabine was bound to chitosan and Eudragit L100-55 and its crystallinity was changed into an amorphous form. The polymeric gemcitabine microparticulate system showed more than 80% release of gemcitabine in 30 minutes in simulated intestinal fluid. When mucin particles were incubated with gemcitabine polymeric microparticulates, the zeta potential of the mucin particles was increased to 1.57 mV, indicating that the polymeric gemcitabine microparticulates were attached to the mucin particles. Furthermore, the F53 polymeric gemcitabine microparticulates having 150 mg of chitosan showed a 3.8-fold increased uptake of gemcitabine into Caco-2 cells over 72 hours compared with gemcitabine solution alone.Conclusion: Overall, these results suggest that polymeric gemcitabine microparticulate systems could be used as carriers to help oral absorption of gemcitabine.Keywords: gemcitabine, polymeric microparticulates, mucoadhesive, enteric coating, cellular uptake, oral absorptio
