Reducing Healthcare Costs in New York with Syringe Exchange Program Implementation

    Get PDF
This paper explores the cost-effectiveness of New York State-approved syringe exchange programs (SEPs), and provides an estimate of the annual savings in healthcare costs due to these programs. The research utilizes the simplified circulation model that estimated cost savings in Laufer’s (2001) study, however with the most recent data. The cost-effectiveness analysis used data provided by seventeen SEPs, as well as published data for the most recent 12-month period available, and treatment costs from the literature. An estimated 1,608 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases are averted annually in the injection drug user (IDU) population, which translates to about $51,754,152 in treatment cost savings each year due to syringe exchange programs in New York. This research further demonstrates the cost-effectiveness of syringe exchange as prevention strategy.SUNY BrockportPublic Health and Health EducationSenior Honors These

Black men and boys deserve equivalent theoretical and political race and gender liberation frameworks from daily physical and emotional violence as that of women. Feminist theory should more critically consider black men and their struggles. The cases of Emmett Till and George Stinney, Jr. exemplify how Black boys' bodies have been a target of violence in the U.S. This endangerment of black boys continues, exemplified by the shooting of Tamir Rice, wrongful punishment of the Groveland Four, and forced confessions of the Central Park Five.SUNY BrockportDissenting Voice

The Effectiveness of Topical Application of Cannabinoidon DOMS in Collegiate Athletes Measured by Neuropathic Pain Scale

The purpose of this study was to further the research on the influence of using CBD on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). It was hypothesized that CBD would have a positive effect on athletes’ recovery process from DOMS induced exercises. It remains important for athletes and practitioners to know the potential benefits of topical CBD in the treatment for and recovery from strenuously repetitive exercise.https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/exercise-science-research-proposal-posters/1095/thumbnail.jp

How Life During a Pandemic May Have Contributed to Homicide in Houston, Texas

    Get PDF
This study offers an examination of a sample of 150 homicides in Houston, Texas in 2020 as described by local news sources. The purpose was to understand dynamics that may explain what appears to be an increase in domestic disputes that led to increases in homicides. This mixed method study utilized content analysis that included quantifying the patterns of concepts in the news reports to isolate racial, gender and location factors. Data are displayed in tables and figures to illustrate patterns and regression analyses indicate predictive relations. The study is important given the recent homicide increases during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the substantial impact on families and communities. The data reveal that domestic disputes and access to firearms are evident in the increases. The study offers implications for micro and macro responses involving media coverage, interpersonal communication, community programming and messaging, law enforcement engagement, and justice system reforms

Routine, Opt-Out HIV Testing in a rural emergency department

    Get PDF
There are approximately 1,800 people living with HIV in eastern North Carolina and are unaware of their infection. A decade ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued revised recommendations to routinely test for HIV in various settings, including emergency departments. We used those guidelines to test adults, treat those unaware of their infection, and re-link others to care

An Integrated Theoretical Examination Of General Strain And Identity Theory To Describe Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual (LGB) Youth Drug Use

In recent years, the United States has experienced an increase in LGBT+ youth perpetrating drugs, sex, and violent offenses. According to identity theory, individuals maintain three main identities that if incongruent can create friction which could lead to crime. The friction may involve the LGBT+ identity and other contributing factors such as demographics age, race, religion, level of education, adverse childhood experiences, stigmatization, discrimination, mental illness, and identity measures (masculine versus feminine identities and sexual minority identity). This study examined how the LGBT+ identity may create a strain with an individual’s three main identities, personal, group, and societal, and how any contradicting identities may create enough strain to lead an individual toward drug use, possibly as a means of coping. This study utilized secondary data from Wave 1 of the Generations: A Study of the Life and Health of LGB People in a Changing Society, United States, 2016-2019. The sample consisted of 1,518 participants taken from the initial sample size of 366,644 individuals across the United States. The research questions were 1. What aspects of LGB identity predict drug use in LGB youth? 2. What aspects of LGB strain (stigma/discrimination/adverse childhood experiences) predict drug use in LGB youth? 3. Do sexual and gender identity strains, related to religion and mental health predict the likelihood of drug use? 4. Do negative societal perceptions of LGB individuals, childhood gender nonconformity, femininity versus masculinity, stigma, and discrimination, related to appearance as an acceptable-looking man or woman predict LGB youth drug use? The researcher used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions and binary logistic regressions to analyze the data. The results suggest that the main contributors to LGB drug use are experiences of discrimination, feeling stigmatized, negative religious experiences/views, mental health issues, adverse childhood experiences, and given their identities sexual identity and sexual minority identity. Negative societal perceptions about LGB individuals’ appearance in terms of whether they appear masculine when identifying as a man or feminine given an identity as a woman had no significance. The study has implications for LGB individuals, advocates, policymakers, and stakeholders who are interested in the well-being of LGB youth.
