Differences in spatial memory recognition due to cognitive style
Field independence refers to the ability to perceive details from the surrounding context as a whole and to represent the environment by relying on an internal reference frame. Conversely, field dependence individuals tend to focus their attention on single environmental features analysing them individually. This cognitive style affects several visuo-spatial abilities including spatial memory. This study assesses both the effect of field independence and field dependence on performance displayed on virtual environments of different complexity. Forty young healthy individuals took part in this study. Participants performed the Embedded Figures Test for field independence or dependence assessment and a new spatial memory recognition test. The spatial memory recognition test demanded to memorize a green box location in a virtual room picture. Thereafter, during ten trials participants had to decide if a green box was located in the same position as in the sample picture. Five of the pictures were correct. The information available in the virtual room was manipulated. Hence, two different experimental conditions were tested: a virtual room containing all landmarks and a virtual room with only two cues. Accuracy and reaction time were registered. Analyses demonstrated that higher field independent individuals were related to better spatial memory performance in two landmarks condition and were faster in all landmark condition. In addition, men and women did not differ in their performance. These results suggested that cognitive style affects spatial memory performance and this phenomenon is modulated by environment complexity. This does not affect accuracy but time spent. Moreover, field dependent individuals are unable to organize the navigational field by relying on internal reference frames when few landmarks are available, and this causes them to commit more errors
Characterization of cider by its hydrophobicproteinprofile and foamparameters
This paper describes the characterization of ciders (both “natural” and sparkling cider) from the Principality of Asturias (northwest region of Spain) through the analysis of their protein content, based on their hydrophobic properties, and their foam characteristics. A reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) was applied to the protein analysis, and the foamparameters were measured with Bikerman’s method. Multivariate techniques allowed the authors to differentiate ciders on the basis of the press and foam taking technologies, and foam sensory quality. Feasible and robust models were constructed for classifying purposes. Higher than 95% correct classifications were obtained for differentiating ciders on the basis of the factors studied (cider making technology and foam sensory quality). The multivariate regression model computed allowed the authors to predict (correlation coefficients higher than 0.8) the foamparameters related to foam stability and bubble average lifetime in “natural” cider
Preventive command and control regulation: A Case Analysis
The aim of the current study is to evaluate new preventive command-and-control environmental regulation’s competitive effects on automobile manufacturers and their suppliers. The methodology that we have used is a case analysis, and its main aim is to study an unfamiliar situation. Therefore, we have chosen cases from each of the groups: two suppliers and one manufacturer. The new regulation obliges automobile companies to deeply modify their process technologies and their relationships with their suppliers (toughening requirements and strengthening long-term relationships) and to require their workers to train in environmental matters. Complying with regulation by suppliers will be possible if product and process designs are modified. However, only organisational actions, which include workers’ training in environmental and quality matters and activities to recover value in factories, are capable to achieve it. In any case, these factories have already been affected by trade-offs between environmental and other more classic manufacturing objectives, especially quality
A retrospective study of 188 children complaining of displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus was performed. The period of the study was 1986 to 1997 and all the fractures were treated by closed reduction and percutaneous pinning with two kirschner wires. Gartland classification was used to assess the fracture's displacement. The results were studied clinically and radiologically following Flynn criteria. In the long term follow up 154 cases (82%) were considered satisfactory. A lack of radial pulse was reported in 22 cases (12%) and in all of them a total recovery was achieved after the reduction and stabilization of the fracture. We also record 28 cases (15%) of neural injuries with full recovery between two and six months time. The most frequent permanent damage was cubitus varus in 23 cases (12%) but with little functional impairment
Functional differences between dorsal and ventral hippocampus revealed with AgNOR staining
Hippocampal Inactivation with TTX Impairs Long-Term Spatial Memory Retrieval and Modifies Brain Metabolic Activity
Functional inactivation techniques enable studying the hippocampal involvement in each phase of spatial memory formation in the rat. In this study, we applied tetrodotoxin unilaterally or bilaterally into the dorsal hippocampus to evaluate the role of this brain structure in retrieval of memories acquired 28 days before in the Morris water maze. We combined hippocampal inactivation with the assessment of brain metabolism using cytochrome oxidase histochemistry. Several brain regions were considered, including the hippocampus and other related structures. Results showed that both unilateral and bilateral hippocampal inactivation impaired spatial memory retrieval. Hence, whereas subjects with bilateral hippocampal inactivation showed a circular swim pattern at the side walls of the pool, unilateral inactivation favoured swimming in the quadrants adjacent to the target one. Analysis of cytochrome oxidase activity disclosed regional differences according to the degree of hippocampal functional blockade. In comparison to control group, animals with bilateral inactivation showed increased CO activity in CA1 and CA3 areas of the hippocampus during retrieval, while the activity of the dentate gyrus substantially decreased. However, unilateral inactivated animals showed decreased CO activity in Ammon's horn and the dentate gyrus. This study demonstrated that retrieval recruits differentially the hippocampal subregions and the balance between them is altered with hippocampal functional lesions
