In particular we consider the domain of architectural photographs. A model based approach is adopted with the architectural model built from a “Lego kit” of parameterised parts. The approach taken is different from traditional stereo or shape from X approaches in that identification of the parameterised components (such as windows, doors, buttresses etc) from one image is combined with parallax information in order to generate the 3D model. This model based approach has two main benefits: first, it allows the inference of shape and texture where the evidence from the images is weak; and second, it recovers not only geometry and texture but also an interpretation of the model, which can be used for automatic enhancement techniques such as the application of reflective textures to windowsDick, A.R., Torr, P.H.S., Ruffle, S.J., Cipolla, R
New models for PIXE simulation with Geant4
Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) is a physical effect that is not yet
adequately modelled in Geant4. The current status as in Geant4 9.2 release is
reviewed and new developments are described. The capabilities of the software
prototype are illustrated in application to the shielding of the X-ray
detectors of the eROSITA telescope on the upcoming Spectrum-X-Gamma space

Surveillance of enteric virus infections in a neonatal intensive care unit.
Objective. To investigate the epidemiology of neonatal viral gastroenteritis compared to
the circulation of enteric viruses in children, 109 newborns in the NICU of Mother and
Child Department and 214 children with enteritis admitted to the \u201cG. Di Cristina\u201d Children\u2019s
Hospital in Palermo were monitored for Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Astrovirus and Norovirus
infections.
Methods. Stool samples were examined by EIA to detect viral antigens. Rotavirus strains
were subjected to P- and G-typing.
Results. A Norovirus strain was detected in one neonatal stool specimen whereas an astrovirus
strain was dectected in two neonatal specimens. No Rotavirus or Adenovirus infection
was identified among the newborn infants, while Rotavirus infections were detected
in 24.8% of the symptomatic children. Type G4P[8] constituted 43.4% of the Rotavirus
strains, followed by G2P[4] (18.9%), G3P[8] (17%), G1P[8] (13.2%) and G9P[8] (1.9%).
Overall, Norovirus, Adenovirus and Astrovirus strains were responsible for 15.4% of infections
in the paediatric population with diarrhoea.
Conclusions. Viruses are diffuse agents of infection in children with enteritis. Virological
tests have to be performed to diagnose enteric infections in the paediatric population. Maternal
immunity to common Rotavirus strains combined with the limited circulation of the
emerging G9 Rotavirus type among our population may account for the absence of Rotavirus
infections in newborn infants
Pioglitazone Prevents Capillary Rarefaction in Streptozotocin-Diabetic Rats Independently of Glucose Control and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression
Background/Aims: Reduction of capillary network density occurs early in the development of metabolic syndrome and may be relevant for the precipitation of diabetes. Agonists of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-gamma transcription factor are vasculoprotective, but their capacity for structural preservation of the microcirculation is unclear. Methods: Male Wistar rats were rendered diabetic by streptozotocin and treated with pioglitazone in chow for up to 12 weeks. Capillary density was determined in heart and skeletal muscle after platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) immunostaining. Hallmarks of apoptosis and angiogenesis were determined. Results: Capillary density deteriorated progressively in the presence of hyperglycemia (from 971/mm(2) to 475/mm(2) in quadriceps muscle during 13 weeks). Pioglitazone did not influence plasma glucose, left ventricular weight, or body weight but nearly doubled absolute and relative capillary densities compared to untreated controls (1.2 vs. 0.6 capillaries/myocyte in heart and 1.5 vs. 0.9 capillaries/myocyte in quadriceps muscle) after 13 weeks of diabetes. No antiapoptotic or angiogenic influence of pioglitazone was detected while a reduced expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-3 alpha and PPAR coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1 alpha) mRNA as well as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein possibly occurred as a consequence of improved vascularization. Conclusion: Pioglitazone preserves microvascular structure in diabetes independently of improvements in glycemic control and by a mechanism unrelated to VEGF-mediated angiogenesis. From Multiview Image Curves to 3D Drawings
Reconstructing 3D scenes from multiple views has made impressive strides in
recent years, chiefly by correlating isolated feature points, intensity
patterns, or curvilinear structures. In the general setting - without
controlled acquisition, abundant texture, curves and surfaces following
specific models or limiting scene complexity - most methods produce unorganized
point clouds, meshes, or voxel representations, with some exceptions producing
unorganized clouds of 3D curve fragments. Ideally, many applications require
structured representations of curves, surfaces and their spatial relationships.
This paper presents a step in this direction by formulating an approach that
combines 2D image curves into a collection of 3D curves, with topological
connectivity between them represented as a 3D graph. This results in a 3D
drawing, which is complementary to surface representations in the same sense as
a 3D scaffold complements a tent taut over it. We evaluate our results against

Semantic localisation via globally unique instance segmentation
In this work we propose a novel approach to semantic localisation. Our work is motivated by the need for environment perception techniques which not only perform self-localisation within a map but also simultaneously recognise surrounding objects. Such capabilities are crucial for computer vision applications which interact with the environment: autonomous driving, augmented reality or robotics. In order to achieve this goal we propose a solution which consists of three key steps. Firstly, a database of panoramic RGB images and corresponding globally unique, per-pixel object instance labels is built for the desired environment where we typically consider objects from static categories such as "building" or "tree". Secondly, a semantic segmentation network capable of predicting more than 3000 labels is trained on the collected data. Finally, for a given panoramic query image, the corresponding instance label image predicted by the network is used for semantic matching within the database. The matching is performed in two stages: (i) a fast retrieval of a small subset of database images (~100) with highly overlapping instance label histograms, followed by (ii) an explicit approximate 3 DoF (yaw, pitch, roll) alignment of the selected subset of images and the query image. We evaluate our approach in challenging indoor and outdoor navigation scenarios, achieving better or similar performance when compared to state-of-the-art image retrieval-based localisation approaches using key-point matching and image
level embedding. Our contribution includes: (i) a description of a novel semantic localisation approach using globally unique instance segmentation, (ii) corresponding quantitative and qualitative analysis and (iii) a novel CamVid-360 dataset containing 986 labelled instances of buildings, trees, road signs and poles

The causes of relapse in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are largely unknown. This paper reviews the epidemiological and clinical data on how medications (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, estrogens and antibiotics), lifestyle factors (smoking, psychological stress, diet and air pollution) may precipitate clinical relapses and recurrence. Potential biological mechanisms include: increasing thrombotic tendency, imbalances in prostaglandin synthesis, alterations in the composition of gut microbiota, and mucosal damage causing increased permeability
A variation of Broyden Class methods using Householder adaptive transforms
In this work we introduce and study novel Quasi Newton minimization methods
based on a Hessian approximation Broyden Class-\textit{type} updating scheme,
where a suitable matrix is updated instead of the current Hessian
approximation . We identify conditions which imply the convergence of the
algorithm and, if exact line search is chosen, its quadratic termination. By a
remarkable connection between the projection operation and Krylov spaces, such
conditions can be ensured using low complexity matrices obtained
projecting onto algebras of matrices diagonalized by products of two or
three Householder matrices adaptively chosen step by step. Extended
experimental tests show that the introduction of the adaptive criterion, which
theoretically guarantees the convergence, considerably improves the robustness
of the minimization schemes when compared with a non-adaptive choice; moreover,
they show that the proposed methods could be particularly suitable to solve
large scale problems where - performs poorly
