New Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) sauropod remains from the Valtos Formation, Isle of Skye, Scotland
The discovery of a sauropod tooth and a single sauropod footprint from the Valtos Formation supplements our knowledge of these dinosaurs from the Middle Jurassic of the Isle of Skye. Although the family cannot be determined from this single tooth, it is thought that it represents a primitive eusauropod and may belong to a similar sauropod to that previously described from limited isolated osteological evidence (caudal vertebra, damaged humerus and a rib). The characteristics that suggest this affinity include evidence of denticles on one edge of the tooth, wrinkling and granulation of the enamel, wear suggesting crown-to-crown occlusion, and the spatulate tooth shape. The single sauropod footprint is the oldest record of a sauropod footprint from the Middle Jurassic of Skye
A qualitative study of the contribution of pharmacists to heart failure management in Scotland
Study objectives: (1) To identify the medication management needs of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients and their caregivers; (2) To examine the perceived support for medication management available to these people from health professionals; (3) To identify the actual and potential perceived contribution of pharmacists to medication management.
Setting: A mixed urban/ rural region in the west of Scotland.
Design: Semi-structured qualitative research interviews.
Participants: A total of 50 people with CHF (NYHA Class II and III) due to left ventricular systolic dysfunction (33 males; mean age 67 years, 17 females; mean age 68 years) and 30 nominated caregivers recruited from the outpatient departments of two hospitals in the West of Scotland. Sampling was purposive to include patients from a range of CHF severity, ages and sexes.
Main results: Managing medications was a responsibility shared by both the patients with CHF and caregivers. Treatment regimens were reported to be difficult to comply with. Health professionals were seen to provide little support for medication management. Pharmacists were viewed as being a good and accessible source of practical assistance who were also knowledgeable about the individual’s heart health history. Participants reported valuing advice from pharmacists about the side effects of medications and for their assistance in reducing the complex logistics of medication management and in having medications delivered.
Conclusions: Patients with CHF and caregivers voiced a willingness to try to manage their medication regimen accurately but had a limited capacity to do so. Pharmacists were viewed as providing valuable support to patients with CHF and their caregivers, in terms of medication management. The extended role of pharmacists in medication management of CHF should be encouraged
Influences of neutron star parameters on evolutions of different types of pulsar; evolutions of anomalous X-ray pulsars, soft gamma repeaters and dim isolated thermal neutron stars on the P-\.{P} diagram
Influences of the mass, moment of inertia, rotation, absence of stability in
the atmosphere and some other parameters of neutron stars on the evolution of
pulsars are examined. It is shown that the locations and evolutions of soft
gamma repeaters, anomalous X-ray pulsars and other types of pulsar on the
period versus period derivative diagram can be explained adopting values of
B G for these objects. This approach gives the possibility to explain
many properties of different types of pulsar.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
Quasiperiodic ∼5–60 s fluctuations of VLF signals propagating in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide: a result of pulsating auroral particle precipitation?
Subionospheric very low frequency and low-frequency (VLF/LF) transmitter signals received at middle-latitude ground stations at nighttime were found to exhibit pulsating behavior with periods that were typically in the ∼5–60 s range but sometimes reached ∼100 s. The amplitude versus time shape of the pulsations was often triangular or zigzag-like, hence the term “zigzag effect.” Variations in the envelope shape were usually in the direction of faster development than recovery. Episodes of zigzag activity at Siple, Antarctica (L ∼4.3), and Saskatoon, Canada (L ∼4.2), were found to occur widely during the predawn hours and were not observed during geomagnetically quiet periods. The fluctuations appeared to be caused by ionospheric perturbations at the ∼ 85 km nighttime VLF reflection height in regions poleward of the plasmapause. We infer that in the case of the Saskatoon and Siple data, the perturbations were centered within ∼500 km of the stations and within ∼ 100–200 km of the affected signal paths. Their horizontal extent is inferred to have been in the range ∼50–200 km. The assembled evidence, supported by Corcuffs [1996] recent research at Kerguelen (L ∼3.7), suggests that the underlying cause of the effect was pulsating auroral precipitation. The means by which that precipitation produces ionospheric perturbations at 85 km is not yet clear. Candidate mechanisms include (1) acoustic waves that propagate downward from precipitation regions above the ∼ 85 km VLF reflection level; (2) quasi-static perturbation electric fields that give rise to E×B drifts of the bottomside ionosphere; (3) secondary ionization production and subsequent decay at or below 85 km. Those zigzag fluctuations exhibiting notably faster development than recovery probably originated in secondary ionization produced near 85 km by the more energetic (E >40 keV) electrons in the incident electron spectrum
Preceding rule induction with instance reduction methods
A new prepruning technique for rule induction is presented which applies instance reduction before rule induction. An empirical evaluation records the predictive accuracy and size of rule-sets generated from 24 datasets from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. Three instance reduction algorithms (Edited Nearest Neighbour, AllKnn and DROP5) are compared. Each one is used to reduce the size of the training set, prior to inducing a set of rules using Clark and Boswell's modification of CN2. A hybrid instance reduction algorithm (comprised of AllKnn and DROP5) is also tested. For most of the datasets, pruning the training set using ENN, AllKnn or the hybrid significantly reduces the number of rules generated by CN2, without adversely affecting the predictive performance. The hybrid achieves the highest average predictive accuracy

Review of the Dinosaur Remains from the Middle Jurassic of Scotland, UK
Dinosaurs are rare from the Middle Jurassic worldwide. The Isle of Skye, is the only
place in Scotland thus far to have produced dinosaur remains. These remains consist mainly of
footprints, but also several bones and teeth. These Bajocian and Bathonian remains represent an
important collection of a basal eusauropod, early examples of non-neosauropod and possible basal
titanosauriform eusauropods, and theropod remains that may belong to an early coelurosaur and a
possible megalosaurid, basal tyrannosauroid, or dromaeosaurid. The footprints from here also suggest
a rich and diverse dinosaur fauna for which further better diagnosable remains are likely to be found
Motivational engagement in first-time hearing aid users: a feasibility study
Objective: To assess (1) the feasibility of incorporating the Ida Institute’s Motivation Tools into a UK audiology service, (2) the potential benefits of motivational engagement in first-time hearing aid users, and (3) predictors of hearing aid and general health outcome measures.
Design: A feasibility study using a single-centre, prospective, quasi-randomized controlled design with two arms. The Ida Institute’s Motivation Tools formed the basis for motivational engagement. Study sample: First-time hearing aid users were recruited at the initial hearing assessment appointment. The intervention arm underwent motivational engagement (M+, n = 32), and a control arm (M-, n = 36) received standard care only. Results: The M+ group showed greater self-efficacy, reduced anxiety, and greater engagement with the audiologist at assessment and fitting appointments. However, there were no significant between-group differences 10-weeks post-fitting. Hearing-related communication scores predicted anxiety, and social isolation scores predicted depression for the M+ group. Readiness to address hearing difficulties predicted hearing aid outcomes for the M- group. Hearing sensitivity was not a predictor of outcomes. Conclusions: There were some positive results from motivational engagement early in the patient journey. Future research should consider using qualitative methods to explore whether there are longer-term benefits of motivational engagement in hearing aid users
Dark soliton states of Bose-Einstein condensates in anisotropic traps
Dark soliton states of Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic traps are
studied both analytically and computationally by the direct solution of the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation in three dimensions. The ground and self-consistent
excited states are found numerically by relaxation in imaginary time. The
energy of a stationary soliton in a harmonic trap is shown to be independent of
density and geometry for large numbers of atoms. Large amplitude field
modulation at a frequency resonant with the energy of a dark soliton is found
to give rise to a state with multiple vortices. The Bogoliubov excitation
spectrum of the soliton state contains complex frequencies, which disappear for
sufficiently small numbers of atoms or large transverse confinement. The
relationship between these complex modes and the snake instability is

Pion-Muon Asymmetry Revisited
Long ago an unexpected and unexplainable phenomena was observed. The
distribution of muons from positive pion decay at rest was anisotropic with an
excess in the backward direction relative to the direction of the proton beam
from which the pions were created. Although this effect was observed by several
different groups with pions produced by different means, the result was not
accepted by the physics community, because it is in direct conflict with a
large set of other experiments indicating that the pion is a pseudoscalar
particle. It is possible to satisfy both sets of experiments if helicity-zero
vector particles exist and the pion is such a particle. Helicity-zero vector
particles have direction but no net spin. For the neutral pion to be a vector
particle requires an additional modification to conventional theory as
discussed herein. An experiment is proposed which can prove that the asymmetry
in the distribution of muons from pion decay is a genuine physical effect
because the asymmetry can be modified in a controllable manner. A positive
result will also prove that the pion is NOT a pseudoscalar particle.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
