A ducted wind turbine simulation model for building simulation
Power production is shifting away from centralized generation plants to production of heat and power at the point of demand. A technology that may play a part in this shift is the ducted wind turbine (DWT). The emergence of small building integrated micro turbines opens up the possibility of utilizing the differential pressures occurring around buildings for local power production. This paper describes work to develop and test a simple mathematical model of a ducted wind turbine and its integration within a building simulation tool. A case study in which the simulation model will be used to analyse of the likely power output from a building incorporating ducted wind turbines within the façade is also presented

Contribution of particulate nitrate to airborne measurements of total reactive nitrogen
Simultaneous measurements of speciated, total reactive nitrogen (NOy) and particulate NO3 (particle diameter <1.3 μm) were made on board the NASA P-3B aircraft over the western Pacific in February-April 2001 during the Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) experiment. Gas-phase and particulate NOy was measured using a gold tube catalytic converter. For the interpretation of particulate NOy, conversion efficiencies of particulate NH4NO3, KNO3, NaNO3, and Ca(NO3)2 were measured in the laboratory. Only NH4NO3 showed quantitative conversion, and its conversion efficiency was as high as that for HNO3. NOy measured on board the aircraft was found to be systematically higher by 10-30% than the sum of the individual NOy gas components (Σ(NOy)i) at 0-4 km. Particulate NO3- concentrations measured by a particle-into-liquid sampler (PILS) were nearly equal to NOy - Σ(NOy)i under low-dust-loading conditions. The PILS data showed that the majority of the particulate NO3- was in the form of NH4NO3 under these conditions, suggesting that NH4NO3 particles were quantitatively converted to detectable NO by the NOy converter, consistent with the laboratory experiments. The contribution of particulate NO3- to NOy was most important at 0-2 km, where NO3- constituted 10-30% of NOy during TRACE-P. On average, the amounts of particulate NO3- and gas-phase HNO3 were comparable in this region. Copyright 2005 by the American Geophysical Union

Effect of geometric parameters on the behavior of bolted GFRP pultruded plates
Abstract : This paper presents the effect of geometric parameters on the behavior of bolted GFRP pultruded plates for civil engineering applications. After a literature review, results of an experimental analysis investigating the behavior of GFRP-to-steel single-lap bolted connections are presented. Then, a finite element analysis validated by experimental data is used to evaluate the effects of the end-distance, side-distance, gage, pitch and plate properties on the strength and failure mode of the connection. A critical examination of geometric recommendations proposed in design references is presented. Bearing failure caused by contact of the bolt on the GFRP plate is usually defined as the preferred failure mode. With highly orthotropic plate, this type of failure was found to be less likely to occur when loading is applied in the pultruded direction. The investigation showed that the minimum end-distance and pitch-distance recommended by design references usually produce a connection with the maximum capacity. However, it was found that the minimum side-distance recommended by these references does not necessarily lead to the maximum capacity for one-bolt and for two-bolt in a column connections

Evaluating regional emission estimates using the TRACE-P observations
Measurements obtained during the NASA Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) experiment are used in conjunction with regional modeling analysis to evaluate emission estimates for Asia. A comparison between the modeled values and the observations is one method to evaluate emissions. Based on such analysis it is concluded that the inventory performs well for the light alkanes, CO, ethyne, SO2, and NOₓ. Furthermore, based on model skill in predicting important photochemical species such as O₃, HCHO, OH, HO₂, and HNO₃, it is found that the emissions inventories are of sufficient quality to support preliminary studies of ozone production. These are important finding in light of the fact that emission estimates for many species (such as speciated NMHCs and BC) for this region have only recently been estimated and are highly uncertain. Using a classification of the measurements built upon trajectory analysis, we compare observed species distributions and ratios of species to those modeled and to ratios estimated from the emissions inventory. It is shown that this technique can reconstruct a spatial distribution of propane/benzene that looks remarkably similar to that calculated from the emissions inventory. A major discrepancy between modeled and observed behavior is found in the Yellow Sea, where modeled values are systematically underpredicted. The integrated analysis suggests that this may be related to an underestimation of emissions from the domestic sector. The emission is further tested by comparing observed and measured species ratios in identified megacity plumes. Many of the model derived ratios (e.g., BC/CO, SOₓ/C₂H₂) fall within ∼25% of those observed and all fall outside of a factor of 2.5. A review of the methodological features of systematic reviews in maternal medicine
Background
In maternal medicine, research evidence is scattered making it difficult to access information for clinical decision making. Systematic reviews of good methodological quality are essential to provide valid inferences and to produce usable evidence summaries to guide management. This review assesses the methodological features of existing systematic reviews in maternal medicine, comparing Cochrane and non-Cochrane reviews in maternal medicine.
Methods
Medline, Embase, Database of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) were searched for relevant reviews published between 2001 and 2006. We selected those reviews in which a minimum of two databases were searched and the primary outcome was related to the maternal condition. The selected reviews were assessed for information on framing of question, literature search and methods of review.
Results
Out of 2846 citations, 68 reviews were selected. Among these, 39 (57%) were Cochrane reviews. Most of the reviews (50/68, 74%) evaluated therapeutic interventions. Overall, 54/68 (79%) addressed a focussed question. Although 64/68 (94%) reviews had a detailed search description, only 17/68 (25%) searched without language restriction. 32/68 (47%) attempted to include unpublished data and 11/68 (16%) assessed for the risk of missing studies quantitatively. The reviews had deficiencies in the assessment of validity of studies and exploration for heterogeneity. When compared to Cochrane reviews, other reviews were significantly inferior in specifying questions (OR 20.3, 95% CI 1.1–381.3, p = 0.04), framing focussed questions (OR 30.9, 95% CI 3.7- 256.2, p = 0.001), use of unpublished data (OR 5.6, 95% CI 1.9–16.4, p = 0.002), assessment for heterogeneity (OR 38.1, 95%CI 2.1, 688.2, p = 0.01) and use of meta-analyses (OR 3.7, 95% CI 1.3–10.8, p = 0.02).
Conclusion
This study identifies areas which have a strong influence on maternal morbidity and mortality but lack good quality systematic reviews. Overall quality of the existing systematic reviews was variable. Cochrane reviews were of better quality as compared to other reviews. There is a need for good quality systematic reviews to inform practice in maternal medicine
