Accelerated and Inexpensive Machine Learning for Manufacturing Processes with Incomplete Mechanistic Knowledge
Machine Learning (ML) is of increasing interest for modeling parametric
effects in manufacturing processes. But this approach is limited to established
processes for which a deep physics-based understanding has been developed over
time, since state-of-the-art approaches focus on reducing the experimental
and/or computational costs of generating the training data but ignore the
inherent and significant cost of developing qualitatively accurate
physics-based models for new processes . This paper proposes a transfer
learning based approach to address this issue, in which a ML model is trained
on a large amount of computationally inexpensive data from a physics-based
process model (source) and then fine-tuned on a smaller amount of costly
experimental data (target). The novelty lies in pushing the boundaries of the
qualitative accuracy demanded of the source model, which is assumed to be high
in the literature, and is the root of the high model development cost. Our
approach is evaluated for modeling the printed line width in Fused Filament
Fabrication. Despite extreme functional and quantitative inaccuracies in the
source our approach reduces the model development cost by years, experimental
cost by 56-76%, computational cost by orders of magnitude, and prediction error

Regional and global cycling of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs): An assessment and a feasibility study in a Nordic perspective.
Studies on the fate, behaviour, and environmental and health effects of POPs in Scandinavia are reviewed. The fugacity model was used to assess the migration of hexachlorobenzene, lindane, and fluoranthene. Modeled concentrations were compared with measurements in some compartments of the environment. Fairly good agreement was observed for air and water but less so for fish. More refined data are needed to verify the results from models applied in specific regions. Several cases of reproductive tract anomalies, cancers, and behavioral abnormalities have been detected and their relationship to the presence of various POPs is now becoming evident for various species

The National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III report (ATP III)1 identified the metabolic syndrome as a multiplex risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) that is deserving of more clinical attention. The cardiovascular community has responded with heightened awareness and interest. ATP III criteria for metabolic syndrome differ somewhat from those of other organizations. Consequently, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in collaboration with the American Heart Association, convened a conference to examine scientific issues related to definition of the metabolic syndrome. The scientific evidence related to definition was reviewed and considered from several perspectives: (1) major clinical outcomes, (2) metabolic components, (3) pathogenesis, (4) clinical criteria for diagnosis, (5) risk for clinical outcomes, and (6) therapeutic interventions

"The National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III report (ATP III)1 identified the metabolic syndrome as a multiplex risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) that is deserving of more clinical attention. Subsequently, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), in collaboration with the American Heart Association (AHA), convened a conference to examine scientific issues related to definition of the metabolic syndrome.2 The present report summarizes a second conference devoted to clinical management of the metabolic syndrome, which was sponsored by the AHA in partnership with the NHLBI and cosponsored by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). This latter conference considered the following issues: (1) pathogenesis and presentation of the metabolic syndrome, (2) management of underlying risk factors, (3) management of metabolic risk factors, and (4) unresolved issues and research challenges. The conference on definition2 confirmed CVD as a major clinical outcome of metabolic syndrome and identified 6 major components of the syndrome: abdominal obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, insulin resistance ± glucose intolerance, a proinflammatory state, and a prothrombotic state. The follow-up conference on management was structured around therapies for these components. Clinical recognition of the metabolic syndrome is generally based on finding several well-recognized signs in clinical practice: abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, reduced HDL cholesterol, raised blood pressure, and elevated plasma glucose. In addition, research shows that other components not routinely measured commonly aggregate with the major components: elevated apolipoprotein B, small LDL particles, insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), and variation in coagulation factors (eg, plasminogen activator inhibitor [PAI]-1 and fibrinogen). The conference on definition2 also emphasized that risk for type 2 diabetes is higher in persons with metabolic syndrome and that diabetes is a major risk factor for CVD. It also examined various criteria for a clinical diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome. The diagnostic scheme developed by ATP III is shown in the Table. Clinical criteria proposed by the World Health Organization3 and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists4 also were reviewed. These latter criteria overlap with those of ATP III but differ by requiring direct evidence of insulin resistance for diagnosis. Both the World Health Organization and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommend an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in patients without an elevated fasting glucose. In other words, in the absence of impaired fasting glucose (IFG), IGT detected by OGTT is considered as one metabolic risk factor defining the metabolic syndrome. ATP III does not recommend OGTT in such persons, even through IGT is a high-risk condition for type 2 diabetes (independent of IFG) and correlates with increased risk for CVD. ATP III, however, held that the information gained by OGTT does not outweigh its costs and inconvenience in routine practice. The present conference on management moved from the issue of definition of the metabolic syndrome to the wide issues of clinical management.

The voluntary withdrawal of cerivastatin (Baycol) from the U.S. market on August 8, 2001, by the manufacturer, in agreement with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has prompted concern on the part of physicians and patients regarding the safety of the cholesterol-lowering class of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, more commonly known as “statins.” This American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (ACC/AHA/NHLBI) Clinical Advisory is intended to summarize for professionals the current understanding of statin use, focused on myopathy, and to provide updated recommendations for the appropriate use of statins, including cautions, contraindications, and safety monitoring for statin therapy. Its purpose is not to discourage the appropriate use of statins, which have life-saving potential in properly selected patients, particularly those with established coronary heart disease (CHD) and others at high risk for developing CHD. Included are recent myopathy information compiled by the FDA, information from clinical trials, and summaries from the recently released report of the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP)

Nutrition, environment and cardiovascular health (NESCAV): protocol of an inter-regional cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND: Despite the remarkable technological progress in health care and treatment, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of premature death, prolonged hospitalization and disability in most European countries. In the population of the Greater Region (Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, Wallonia in Belgium, and Lorraine in France), the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and disease is among the highest in Europe, warranting the need for a better understanding of factors contributing to this pattern. In this context, the cross-border "Nutrition, Environment and Cardiovascular Health-NESCAV" project is initiated by an inter-regional multi-disciplinary consortium and supported by the INTERREG IV A program "Greater Region", 2007-2013, to fight synergically and harmoniously against this major public health problem. METHODS/DESIGN: The objectives of the three-year planned project are to assess, in a representative sample of 3000 randomly selected individuals living at the Greater Region, 1) the cardiovascular health and risk profile, 2) the association between the dietary habits and the cardiovascular risk, 3) the association of occupational and environmental pollution markers with the cardiovascular risk, 4) the knowledge, awareness and level of control of cardiovascular risk factors, 5) the potential gaps in the current primary prevention, and finally, to address evidence-based recommendations enabling the development of inter-regional guidance to help policy-makers and health care workers for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. DISCUSSION: The findings will provide tools that may enable the Greater Region's decision-makers and health professionals to implement targeted and cost-effective prevention strategies
An application of the patient rule-induction method for evaluating the contribution of the Apolipoprotein E and Lipoprotein Lipase genes to predicting ischemic heart disease
Different combinations of genetic and environmental risk factors are known to contribute to the complex etiology of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in different subsets of individuals. We employed the Patient Rule-Induction Method (PRIM) to select the combination of risk factors and risk factor values that identified each of 16 mutually exclusive partitions of individuals having significantly different levels of risk of IHD. PRIM balances two competing objectives: (1) finding partitions where the risk of IHD is high and (2) maximizing the number of IHD cases explained by the partitions. A sequential PRIM analysis was applied to data on the incidence of IHD collected over 8 years for a sample of 5,455 unrelated individuals from the Copenhagen City Heart Study (CCHS) to assess the added value of variation in two candidate susceptibility genes beyond the traditional, lipid and body mass index risk factors for IHD. An independent sample of 362 unrelated individuals also from the city of Copenhagen was used to test the model obtained for each of the hypothesized partitions. Genet.
