Using Rhizomatic Thinking in Early Childhood Pedagogy to Avoid Making Other into Same

    Get PDF
As early years educators many of us espouse a belief that all children are unique, but frequently enforce subtle barriers (often disguised as choice) to what we enable them to accomplish. Deleuze and Guattari’s (1987) philosophy of thought challenges these parameters and has the potential to strongly influence practice and personal beliefs. Applying their concept of rhizomatic thinking to encounters with children and colleagues can offer fresh insights, adding greater depth and multiplicity of meaning

African Regional Aquaculture Centre Library: information resources and services

    Get PDF
Effective research development is no doubt information driven and ARAC library remains the place to easily access accurate and reliable information. There is an urgent need to acquire and maintain its information resources in order to provide globally acceptable information. The production of validated research literatures by ARAC staff goes to show that the library has made itself relevant to scientist in achieving their mandate to ARAC. This Paper examines the resources and services rendered by the African Regional Aquaculture Centre library in meeting the needs of research Scientist, students and stakeholders in Aquaculture practice in the Niger Delta Nigeria. It describes the establishment of TEEAL and OARE service within the library and examines the research interest of scientist and library users with emphasis on their research areas

Precessing Jets and Molecular Outflows: A 3-D Numerical Study

We present 3-D numerical hydrodynamical simulations of precessing supersonic heavy jets to explore how well they serve as a model for generating molecular outflows from Young Stellar Objects. The dynamics are studied with a number of high resolution simulations on a Cartesian grid (128x128x128 zones) using a high order finite difference method. A range of cone angles and precession rates were included in the study. Two higher resolution runs (256x256x256 zones) were made for comparison in order to confirm numerical convergence of global flow characteristics. Morphological, kinematical and dynamical characteristics of precessing jets are described and compared to important properties of straight jets and also to observations of YSOs. In order to examine the robustness of precessing jets as a mean to produce molecular outflows around Young Stellar Objects, ``synthetic observations'' of the momentum distributions of the simulated precessing jets are compared to observations of molecular outflows. It is found that precessing jets match better the morphology, highly forward driven momentum and momentum distributions along the long axis of molecular outflows than do wind-driven or straight jet-driven flow models.Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 31 pages, using aasms.sty, Also available in postscript with figures via a gzipped tar file at ftp://s1.msi.umn.edu/pub/afrank/3DJet/3DJet.tar.gz . The role of women in fishery activities in some coastal communities of Rivers State, Nigeria

    Get PDF
Fisheries activities in 10 communities of Rivers State were investigated to determine the role of women in its development and sustainability. Two hundred structured questionnaires were randomly distributed in three communities (20 per community) across three Local Government Area of the State. The results from the study indicated that young and married women are actively involved in fisheries activities on part-time basis, when compared to the older ones. In the study area, women are mainly involved in the marketing of fishery products than processing or active fishing. Women are more involved in picking of shellfishes such as oyster, periwinkle at low tide than in creeks and rivers. Fish processing in these communities are done mostly by smoking, using a standing oven, which can dry a lot of fish at a time. The marketing strategies adopted by most women in selling their fishery products in the area are open market display and hawking, although, some sell their catch at landing jetties to buyers. Lack of credit facilities, poor transportation network and upsurge in criminal activities have been identified as major constraints facing women involvement in fishery activities in these areas. There is therefore, the need to empower the women fisher folks in these areas through granting of loans and credit facilities, capacity building, introduction of new technologies and improved transport network systems. These will go a long way in boosting fish production, improve their livelihood and enhance socio-economic status of the women fisherfolks in the coastal communities

Defect-dependent colossal negative thermal expansion in UiO-66(Hf) metal-organic framework

    Get PDF
Thermally-densified hafnium terephthalate UiO-66(Hf) is shown to exhibit the strongest isotropic negative thermal expansion (NTE) effect yet reported for a metal-organic framework (MOF). Incorporation of correlated vacancy defects within the framework affects both the extent of thermal densification and the magnitude of NTE observed in the densified product. We thus demonstrate that defect inclusion can be used to tune systematically the physical behaviour of a MOF.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, revise
