Alternating quiver Hecke algebras
For simply-laced quivers, we consider the fixed-point subalgebra of the
quiver Hecke algebra under the homogeneous sign map. This leads to a new family
of algebras we call alternating quiver Hecke algebras. We give a basis theorem
and a presentation by generators and relations which is strikingly similar to
the KLR presentation for quiver Hecke algebras.Comment: 15 page

The Research Consultation: What Do You Do When You\u27re Meeting with a Student?
Research consultations are individualized research sessions tailored to meet a student\u27s particular information need. This infographic outlines six best practices for reference librarians or other information professionals providing research consultations to an undergraduate population
Investigation of the effects of NaOH dopant level on the physical and mechanical properties of carbon/phenolic composite material
The near-catastrophic erosion of the STS-8A solid rocket booster nozzle was the instigating factor in the recent, and on-going, intensive investigation of carbon/phenolic composite materials. Much of this effort has been focused on the effect of sodium contamination on the carbon fibers. It is known that sodium acts as a catalyst in the oxidation of the fibers at elevated temperatures. A study was undertaken to determine what changes were caused by variation in sodium content. Investigations were conducted in three areas: (1) phenolic resin; (2) carbon/phenolic prepreg; and (3) cured laminates. Due to the exploratory nature of the studies, a variety of tests in addition to those normally run in production facilities were considered. The experimental methodologies and results of these experiments are discussed, and recommendations for improving techniques and extending the research program are presented
Core inflation at the Bank of Canada: A critique
Core inflation is a useful concept for the theory and practice of monetary policy. The Bank of Canada maintains, in addition, that core inflation should be, and has in fact been, a useful predictor of headline inflation. Under the bank's policy of inflation targeting, however, this is incorrect: over horizons of a year or more the best forecast should be the 2 percent target; and core inflation should have no predictive content. Post-1995 evidence confirms this argument.TBA
Reflections on the introduction of value added tax in the United Kingdom and goods and services tax in New Zealand
Twenty-two years ago (in 1985) the New Zealand (NZ) Goods and Service Tax
(GST) Act was enacted. The Value Added Tax (VAT) in the United Kingdom (UK)
has now been operational for over thirty-four years. VAT and GST are now an
accepted part of taxation policy. Such controversy as remains is concerned with
specific issues rather than the existence of the tax itself. However the specific form
the legislation takes in each country differs and the process of introducing the tax can in hindsight be evaluated in order to analyse the rules, methods and techniques that have proved to be most efficient and effective
Percolation properties of the classic Sierpinski carpet and sponge
Iterative construction of a Sierpinski carpet or sponge is regarded as a
critical phenomenon analogous to uncorrelated percolation. Critical exponents
are derived or calculated that are related by equations identical to those
obtained from percolation theory. Finite-size scaling then gives accurate
values for the conductivity of the carpet or sponge at any stage of iteration
