The First Five Minutes: Enhancing Simulation Education for First-Year Pediatric Residents
We are looking at the feasibility of redesigning the existing simulation education for first-year residents within the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s pediatric residency program to increase learning opportunities and to enhance exposure to pediatric medical emergencies. Novel simulation scenarios were designed to provide an introduction to managing the first five minutes of commonly encountered emergencies on the inpatient wards. These shortened simulations allow for educational objectives to be tailored to the expected knowledge and responsibilities of first-year residents

Comparison of predicted and measured temperatures of UH-60A helicopter transmission
The 2109-kW (2828-hp) UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter transmission was one of the transmissions used to obtain an experimental data base. Component improvements or new transmission concepts can thus be evaluated by comparison with the established data. Results of efficiency and vibration tests of the UH-60A have been reported previously. In this investigation the transmission was instrumented internally and tested over a range of operating conditions. The speed was varied from 50 to 100 percent of the full rated value, and the torque was varied from 10 to 100 percent of the full rated value. Temperatures of internal bearings and gears were measured. The computer program Planetsys was used to simulate the thermal performance of this transmission. The calculated temperatures were then compared with the corresponding measured values. The highest measured temperature was 405 K (270 F) on the outer race of the high-speed input shaft roller bearing, at the 100-percent power condition. In general, the predicted temperatures compared very well with the measured values, most of them being within 5 kelvin (9 F). Specifically, the temperatures predicted for the single-row spherical roller planetary bearing averaged only about 4 kelvin (8 F) lower than the highest measured value

Structural Determinants of the Natural Rate of Unemployment in Canada
This paper presents empirical estimates of the policy and structural determinants of the natural rate of unemployment in Canada. The paper begins with a discussion of structural features of the economy which impinge on the adjustment of real wages to their equilibrium level. Estimates are presented showing how the generosity of the unemployment insurance system is related to past levels of unemployment. The empirical results indicate that government policies have been largely responsible for changes in the natrual rate, and hence can contribute to a reduction in the natural rate in the medium term.Natural rate of unemployment; Canada
Guidelines for the Provision of Garbage Reception Facilities at Ports Under MARPOL Annex V
This report offers guidelines for the provision of adequate
port reception facilities for vessel-generated garbage
under the requirements of Annex V of the International
Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships, 1973 (MARPOL 73/78), Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships. MARPOL Annex V prohibits at-sea disposal of plastic materials from vessels, and specifies the distance from shore at which other materials may be dumped. Annex V also requires the provision of port reception facilities for garbage, but it does not specify these facilities or how they are to be provided. Since the at-sea dumping restrictions apply to all vessels, the reception facility requirement applies to all ports, terminals, and marinas that serve vessels. These guidelines were prepared to assist port owners and operators in meeting their obligation to provide adequate reception facilities for garbage. The report synthesizes available information and draws upon experience from the first years ofimplementation of MARPOL Annex V. (PDF file contains 55 pages.
A major outburst from the X-ray binary RX J0520.5-6932
We report on the analysis of 8 years of MAssive Compact Halo Objects (MACHO)
data for the source RX J0520.5-6932. A regular period of 24.4 days has been
confirmed, however this is manifest almost entirely in the red part of the
spectrum. A major outburst, lasting approximately 200 days, was observed which
increased the apparent brightness of the object by approximately 0.15
magnitudes without significantly altering its V-R colour index. This outburst
was also seen in X-ray data. The evidence from this analysis points to the
identification of this object as a Be/X-ray binary with a periodically variable
circumstellar disk and a very early optical counterpart.Comment: Paper has been accepted by MNRA
