Differential Privacy for Relational Algebra: Improving the Sensitivity Bounds via Constraint Systems
Differential privacy is a modern approach in privacy-preserving data analysis
to control the amount of information that can be inferred about an individual
by querying a database. The most common techniques are based on the
introduction of probabilistic noise, often defined as a Laplacian parametric on
the sensitivity of the query. In order to maximize the utility of the query, it
is crucial to estimate the sensitivity as precisely as possible.
In this paper we consider relational algebra, the classical language for
queries in relational databases, and we propose a method for computing a bound
on the sensitivity of queries in an intuitive and compositional way. We use
constraint-based techniques to accumulate the information on the possible
values for attributes provided by the various components of the query, thus

Anatomical and biomechanical traits of broiler chickens across ontogeny. Part II. Body segment inertial properties and muscle architecture of the pelvic limb
In broiler chickens, genetic success for desired production traits is often shadowed by welfare concerns related to musculoskeletal health. Whilst these concerns are clear, a viable solution is still elusive. Part of the solution lies in knowing how anatomical changes in afflicted body systems that occur across ontogeny influence standing and moving. Here, to demonstrate these changes we quantify the segment inertial properties of the whole body, trunk (legs removed) and the right pelvic limb segments of five broilers at three different age groups across development. We also consider how muscle architecture (mass, fascicle length and other properties related to mechanics) changes for selected muscles of the pelvic limb. All broilers used had no observed lameness, but we document the limb pathologies identified post mortem, since these two factors do not always correlate, as shown here. The most common leg disorders, including bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis and rotational and angular deformities of the lower limb, were observed in chickens at all developmental stages. Whole limb morphology is not uniform relative to body size, with broilers obtaining large thighs and feet between four and six weeks of age. This implies that the energetic cost of swinging the limbs is markedly increased across this growth period, perhaps contributing to reduced activity levels. Hindlimb bone length does not change during this period, which may be advantageous for increased stability despite the increased energetic costs. Increased pectoral muscle growth appears to move the centre of mass cranio-dorsally in the last two weeks of growth. This has direct consequences for locomotion (potentially greater limb muscle stresses during standing and moving). Our study is the first to measure these changes in the musculoskeletal system across growth in chickens, and reveals how artificially selected changes of the morphology of the pectoral apparatus may cause deficits in locomotion
Towards Intelligent Databases
This article is a presentation of the objectives and techniques
of deductive databases. The deductive approach to databases aims at extending
with intensional definitions other database paradigms that describe
applications extensionaUy. We first show how constructive specifications can
be expressed with deduction rules, and how normative conditions can be defined
using integrity constraints. We outline the principles of bottom-up and
top-down query answering procedures and present the techniques used for
integrity checking. We then argue that it is often desirable to manage with
a database system not only database applications, but also specifications of
system components. We present such meta-level specifications and discuss
their advantages over conventional approaches

5-State Rotation-Symmetric Number-Conserving Cellular Automata are not Strongly Universal
We study two-dimensional rotation-symmetric number-conserving cellular
automata working on the von Neumann neighborhood (RNCA). It is known that such
automata with 4 states or less are trivial, so we investigate the possible
rules with 5 states. We give a full characterization of these automata and show
that they cannot be strongly Turing universal. However, we give example of
constructions that allow to embed some boolean circuit elements in a 5-states
RNCA
Direct Absorption Volumetric Molten Salt Receiver With Integral Storage
A new design is presented for a concentrating solar power central receiver system with integrated thermal storage. Concentrated sunlight penetrates and is absorbed within a passive molten salt pool, also acting as a single-tank assisted thermocline storage system. The receiver has a relatively small aperture, open to the environment without requiring a transparent window to isolate the system, exhibiting low losses while achieving high temperatures needed for efficient power generation. The use of an insulated divider plate provides a physical and thermal barrier to separate the hot and cold salt layers within the receiver. The position of the divider plate is controlled throughout the day to enhance the natural thermocline which forms within the salt. As a result, continuous, high temperature heat extraction is possible even as the average temperature of the salt is declining. Experimental results are presented for an optically heated 5 L capacity sodium-potassium nitrate salt volumetric receiver equipped with a movable divider plate.
