Accurate on-wafer power and harmonic measurements of mm-wave amplifiers and devices
A novel integrated test system that accurately measures on-wafer S-parameters, power levels, load-pull contours and harmonics over 1 to 50 GHz is presented. The system measures power and S-parameters with single contact measurements and integrated hardware. There are two keys to this system: first, the network analyzer samplers are used as frequency-selective power meters with large dynamic ranges; second, all measurements are vector-corrected to the device under test reference planes. The capabilities and accuracy were demonstrated by measuring the power at the fundamental frequency and four harmonic frequencies of a 50-GHz traveling wave amplifier and the load-pull contours of a MODFET at 30 GH
Design of a Lambda system for population transfer in superconducting nanocircuits
The implementation of a Lambda scheme in superconducting artificial atoms
could allow detec- tion of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) and
other quantum manipulations in the microwave regime. However symmetries which
on one hand protect the system against decoherence, yield selection rules which
may cancel coupling to the pump external drive. The tradeoff between efficient
coupling and decoherence due to broad-band colored Noise (BBCN), which is often
the main source of decoherence is addressed, in the class of nanodevices based
on the Cooper pair box (CPB) design. We study transfer efficiency by STIRAP,
showing that substantial efficiency is achieved for off-symmetric bias only in
the charge-phase regime. We find a number of results uniquely due to
non-Markovianity of BBCN, namely: (a) the efficiency for STIRAP depends
essentially on noise channels in the trapped subspace; (b) low-frequency
fluctuations can be analyzed and represented as fictitious correlated
fluctuations of the detunings of the external drives; (c) a simple figure of
merit for design and operating prescriptions allowing the observation of STIRAP
is proposed. The emerging physical picture also applies to other classes of
coherent nanodevices subject to BBCN.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
Correlation of Wissler Human Thermal Model Blood Flow and Shiver Algorithms
The Wissler Human Thermal Model (WHTM) is a thermal math model of the human body that has been widely used to predict the human thermoregulatory response to a variety of cold and hot environments. The model has been shown to predict core temperature and skin temperatures higher and lower, respectively, than in tests of subjects in crew escape suit working in a controlled hot environments. Conversely the model predicts core temperature and skin temperatures lower and higher, respectively, than in tests of lightly clad subjects immersed in cold water conditions. The blood flow algorithms of the model has been investigated to allow for more and less flow, respectively, for the cold and hot case. These changes in the model have yielded better correlation of skin and core temperatures in the cold and hot cases. The algorithm for onset of shiver did not need to be modified to achieve good agreement in cold immersion simulation
Design Considerations for Fusible Heat Sink
Traditionally radiator designs are based off a passive or flow through design depending on vehicle requirements. For cyclical heat loads, a novel idea of combining a full flow through radiator to a phase change material is currently being investigated. The flow through radiator can be designed for an average heat load while the phase change material can be used as a source of supplemental heat rejections when vehicle heat loads go above the average load. Furthermore, by using water as the phase change material, harmful radiation protection can be provided to the crew. This paper discusses numerous trades conducted to understand the most optimal fusible heat sink design for a particular heat load. Trades include configuration concepts, amount of phase change needed for supplemental heat rejection, and the form of interstitial material needed for optimal performance. These trades were used to culminate to a fusible heat sink design. The paper will discuss design parameters taken into account to develop an engineering development unit
A Morphing Radiator for High-Turndown Thermal Control of Crewed Space Exploration Vehicles
Spacecraft designed for missions beyond low earth orbit (LEO) face a difficult thermal control challenge, particularly in the case of crewed vehicles where the thermal control system (TCS) must maintain a relatively constant internal environment temperature despite a vastly varying external thermal environment and despite heat rejection needs that are contrary to the potential of the environment. A thermal control system is in other words required to reject a higher heat load to warm environments and a lower heat load to cold environments, necessitating a quite high turndown ratio. A modern thermal control system is capable of a turndown ratio of on the order of 12:1, but for crew safety and environment compatibility these are massive multi-loop fluid systems. This paper discusses the analysis of a unique radiator design which employs the behavior of shape memory alloys (SMA) to vary the turndown of, and thus enable, a single-loop vehicle thermal control system for space exploration vehicles. This design, a morphing radiator, varies its shape in response to facesheet temperature to control view of space and primary surface emissivity. Because temperature dependence is inherent to SMA behavior, the design requires no accommodation for control, instrumentation, nor power supply in order to operate. Thermal and radiation modeling of the morphing radiator predict a turndown ranging from 11.9:1 to 35:1 independent of TCS configuration. Stress and deformation analyses predict the desired morphing behavior of the concept. A system level mass analysis shows that by enabling a single loop architecture this design could reduce the TCS mass by between 139 kg and 225 kg. The concept is demonstrated in proof-of-concept benchtop tests
Human Thermal Model Evaluation Using the JSC Human Thermal Database
The human thermal database developed at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) is used to evaluate a set of widely used human thermal models. This database will facilitate a more accurate evaluation of human thermoregulatory response using in a variety of situations, including those situations that might otherwise prove too dangerous for actual testing--such as extreme hot or cold splashdown conditions. This set includes the Wissler human thermal model, a model that has been widely used to predict the human thermoregulatory response to a variety of cold and hot environments. These models are statistically compared to the current database, which contains experiments of human subjects primarily in air from a literature survey ranging between 1953 and 2004 and from a suited experiment recently performed by the authors, for a quantitative study of relative strength and predictive quality of the models. Human thermal modeling has considerable long term utility to human space flight. Such models provide a tool to predict crew survivability in support of vehicle design and to evaluate crew response in untested environments. It is to the benefit of any such model not only to collect relevant experimental data to correlate it against, but also to maintain an experimental standard or benchmark for future development in a readily and rapidly searchable and software accessible format. The Human thermal database project is intended to do just so; to collect relevant data from literature and experimentation and to store the data in a database structure for immediate and future use as a benchmark to judge human thermal models against, in identifying model strengths and weakness, to support model development and improve correlation, and to statistically quantify a model s predictive quality

Big Bang nucleosynthesis revisited via Trojan Horse Method measurements
Nuclear reaction rates are among the most important input for understanding
the primordial nucleosynthesis and therefore for a quantitative description of
the early Universe. An up-to-date compilation of direct cross sections of
2H(d,p)3H, 2H(d,n)3He, 7Li(p,alpha)4He and 3He(d,p)4He reactions is given.
These are among the most uncertain cross sections used and input for Big Bang
nucleosynthesis calculations. Their measurements through the Trojan Horse
Method (THM) are also reviewed and compared with direct data. The reaction
rates and the corresponding recommended errors in this work were used as input
for primordial nucleosynthesis calculations to evaluate their impact on the 2H,
