The Problem of Doping
In this Essay, we examine Professor Michael J. Sandel and Judge Richard A. Posner\u27s thoughts on how to draw the line between substances and techniques that are fair game and those that constitute doping; whether there is a difference between sport and spectacle; and the nature of the public’s interest in sport as an institution and in doping as a practice that risks its integrity. Although we do not agree with all of their conclusions, they have made serious contributions to the ongoing discussion of these issues. Their linedrawing work in particular deserves considered attention from WADA and other stakeholders as they continue to work toward a useful and defensible definition of the spirit of sport
Toxicological safeguards in the manned Mars missions
Safeguards against toxic chemical exposures during manned Mars missions (MMMs) will be important for the maintenance of crew health and the accomplishment of mission objectives. Potential sources include offgassing, thermodegradation or combustion of materials, metabolic products of crew members, and escape of chemical from containment. Spacecraft maximum allowable concentration (SMAC) limits will have to be established for potential contaminants during the MMMs. The following factors will be used in establishing these limits: duration of mission, simultaneous exposure to other contaminants, deconditioning of crew members after long periods of reduced gravity, and simultaneous exposure to ionizing radiation. Atmospheric contaminant levels in all compartments of the transit spacecraft and Manned Mars Station (MMS) will be monitored at frequent intervals with a real time analyzer. This analyzer will be highly automated, requiring minimal crew time and expertise. The atmospheric analyzer will find other usages during the MMMs such as analyzing Martian atmospheres and soils, exhaled breath and body fluids of crew members, and reaction products in chemical processing facilities
Can Frustration Preserve a Quasi-Two-Dimensional Spin Fluid?
Using spin-wave theory, we show that geometric frustration fails to preserve
a two-dimensional spin fluid. Even though frustration can remove the interlayer
coupling in the ground-state of a classical anti-ferromagnet, spin layers
innevitably develop a quantum-mechanical coupling via the mechanism of ``order
from disorder''. We show how the order from disorder coupling mechanism can be
viewed as a result of magnon pair tunneling, a process closely analogous to
pair tunneling in the Josephson effect. In the spin system, the Josephson
coupling manifests itself as a a biquadratic spin coupling between layers, and
for quantum spins, these coupling terms are as large as the inplane coupling.
An alternative mechanism for decoupling spin layers occurs in classical XY
models in which decoupled "sliding phases" of spin fluid can form in certain
finely tuned conditions. Unfortunately, these finely tuned situations appear
equally susceptible to the strong-coupling effects of quantum tunneling,
forcing us to conclude that in general, geometric frustration cannot preserve a
two-dimensional spin fluid.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Quantum Fermion Hair
It is shown that the Dirac operator in the background of a magnetic
%Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole and a Euclidean vortex possesses normalizable
zero modes in theories containing superconducting cosmic strings. One
consequence of these zero modes is the presence of a fermion condensate around
