Development and application of an assay for uranyl complexation by fungal metabolites, including siderophores
An assay to detect UO2 2+ complexation was developed based on the chrome azurol S (CAS) assay for siderophores (B. Schwyn and J. B. Neilands, Anal. Biochem. 160:47-56, 1987) and was used to investigate the ability of fungal metabolites to complex actinides. In this assay the discoloration of two dyed agars (one containing a CAS-Fe3+ dye and the other containing a CAS-UO2 2+ dye) caused by ligands was quantified. The assay was tested by using the siderophore desferrioxamine B (DFO), and the results showed that there was a regular, reproducible relationship between discoloration and the amount of siderophore added. The ratio of the discoloration on the CAS-UO2 2+ agar to the discoloration on the CAS-Fe3+ agar was independent of the amount of siderophore added. A total of 113 fungi and yeasts were isolated from three soil samples taken from the Peak District National Park. The fungi were screened for the production of UO2 2+ chelators by using the CAS-based assay and were also tested specifically for hydroxamate siderophore production by using the hydroxamate siderophore auxotroph Aureobacterium flavescens JG-9. This organism is highly sensitive to the presence of hydroxamate siderophores. However, the CAS-based assay was found to be less sensitive than the A. flavescens JG-9 assay. No significant difference between the results for each site for the two tests was found. Three isolates were selected for further study and were identified as two Pencillium species and a Mucor species. Our results show that the new assay can be effectively used to screen fungi for the production of UO2 2+ chelating ligands. Models of OH Maser Variations in U Her
Arecibo spectra of the mainline OH maser emission from U Her over more than a
decade show variations of the OH emission over these time scales. These
observations are combined with high spatial resolution VLBA maps to investigate
the causes of the variations in the velocities of the maser components. Global
properties of the dust shell, such as accelerations, variations in the pump and
shell-wide magnetic field changes are examined as possibilities, and
eliminated. A possible solution to the problem involving plasma turbulence and
the local magnetic field is introduced, and the relevant time scales of the
turbulence are calculated. The turbulent velocity field yields time scales of
the turbulence are calculated. The turbulent velocity field yields time scales
that are too long (of order centuries), while the turbulent magnetic field
produces variations on appropriate time scales of a few years. A line-of-sight
model of the turbulence is developed and investigated. The complete exploration
of this solution requires extensive theoretical and observational work.

Tunable dipolar magnetism in high-spin molecular clusters
We report on the Fe17 high-spin molecular cluster and show that this system
is an exemplification of nanostructured dipolar magnetism. Each Fe17 molecule,
with spin S=35/2 and axial anisotropy as small as D=-0.02K, is the magnetic
unit that can be chemically arranged in different packing crystals whilst
preserving both spin ground-state and anisotropy. For every configuration,
molecular spins are correlated only by dipolar interactions. The ensuing
interplay between dipolar energy and anisotropy gives rise to macroscopic
behaviors ranging from superparamagnetism to long-range magnetic order at

Legal determinants of external finance revisited : the inverse relationship between investor protection and societal well-being
This paper investigates relationships between corporate governance traditions and quality of life as measured by a number of widely reported indicators. It provides an empirical analysis of indicators of societal health in developed economies using a classification based on legal traditions. Arguably the most widely cited work in the corporate governance literature has been the collection of papers by La Porta et al. which has shown, inter alia, statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for investor protection. We show statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for societal health. Our comparative evidence suggests that the interests of investors may not be congruent with the interests of wider society, and that the criteria for judging the effectiveness of approaches to corporate governance should not be restricted to financial metrics
Examining the Seyfert - Starburst Connection with Arcsecond Resolution Radio Continuum Observations
We compare the arcsecond-scale circumnuclear radio continuum properties
between five Seyfert and five starburst galaxies, concentrating on the search
for any structures that could imply a spatial or causal connection between the
nuclear activity and a circumnuclear starburst ring. No evidence is found in
the radio emission for a link between the triggering or feeding of nuclear
activity and the properties of circumnuclear star formation. Conversely, there
is no clear evidence of nuclear outflows or jets triggering activity in the
circumnuclear rings of star formation. Interestingly, the difference in the
angle between the apparent orientation of the most elongated radio emission and
the orientation of the major axis of the galaxy is on average larger in
Seyferts than in starburst galaxies, and Seyferts appear to have a larger
physical size scale of the circumnuclear radio continuum emission. The
concentration, asymmetry, and clumpiness parameters of radio continuum emission
in Seyferts and starbursts are comparable, as are the radial profiles of radio
continuum and near-infrared line emission. The circumnuclear star formation and
supernova rates do not depend on the level of nuclear activity. The radio
emission usually traces the near-infrared Br-gamma and H2 1-0 S(1) line
emission on large spatial scales, but locally their distributions are
different, most likely because of the effects of varying local magnetic fields

Increased SK3 expression in DM1 lens cells leads to impaired growth through a greater calcium-induced fragility
Although cataract is a characteristic feature of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), little is known of the underlying mechanisms. We generated four lens epithelial cell lines derived from DM1 cataracts and two from age-matched, non-DM cataracts. Small-pool PCR revealed typical large triplet repeat expansions in the DM1 cells. Furthermore, real-time PCR analysis showed reduced SIX5 expression and increased expression of the Ca2+-activated K+ channel SK3 in the DM1 cells. These cells also exhibited longer population doubling times which did not arise through reduced proliferation, but rather increased cell death as shown by increased release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Using 86Rb+ as a tracer for K+, we found no difference in the resting K+ influx or efflux kinetics. In all cases, the ouabain sensitive component of the influx contributed ~50% of the total. However, stimulating internal Ca2+ by exposure to ionomycin not only caused greater stimulation of K+ (86Rb) efflux in the DM1 cells but also induced a higher rate of cell death (LDH assay). Since both the hyper-stimulation of K+ efflux and cell death were reduced by the highly specific SK inhibitor apamin, we suggest that increased expression of SK3 has a critical role in the increased Ca2+-induced fragility in DM1 cells. The present data, therefore, both help explain the lower epithelial cell density previously observed in DM1 cataracts and provide general insights into mechanisms underlying the fragility of other DM1-affected tissues
The Nature of Composite LINER/HII Galaxies, As Revealed from High-Resolution VLA Observations
A sample of 37 nearby galaxies displaying composite LINER/HII and pure HII
spectra was observed with the VLA in an investigation of the nature of their
weak radio emission. The resulting radio contour maps overlaid on optical
galaxy images are presented here, together with an extensive literature list
and discussion of the individual galaxies. Radio morphological data permit
assessment of the ``classical AGN'' contribution to the global activity
observed in these ``transition'' LINER galaxies. One in five of the latter
objects display clear AGN characteristics: these occur exclusively in

Observations of the 6 Centimeter Lines of OH in Evolved (OH/IR) Stars
Recent observational and theoretical advances have called into question
traditional OH maser pumping models in evolved (OH/IR) stars. The detection of
excited-state OH lines would provide additional constraints to discriminate
amongst these theoretical models. In this Letter, we report on VLA observations
of the 4750 MHz and 4765 MHz lines of OH toward 45 sources, mostly evolved
stars. We detect 4765 MHz emission in the star forming regions Mon R2 and LDN
1084, but we do not detect excited-state emission in any evolved stars. The
flux density and velocity of the 4765 MHz detection in Mon R2 suggests that a
new flaring event has begun.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in ApJ
HI in Arp72 and similarities with M51-type systems
We present neutral hydrogen (H{\sc i}) observations with the Giant Metrewave
Radio Telescope ({\it GMRT}) of the interacting galaxies NGC5996 and NGC5994,
which make up the Arp72 system. Arp72 is an M51-type system and shows a complex
distribution of H{\sc i} tails and a bridge due to tidal interactions. H{\sc i}
column densities ranging from 0.8 atoms cm in the
eastern tidal tail to 1.7 atoms cm in the bridge
connecting the two galaxies, are seen to be associated with star-forming
regions. We discuss the morphological and kinematic similarities of Arp72 with
M51, the archetypal example of the M51-type systems, and Arp86, another
M51-type system studied with the {\it GMRT}, and suggest that a multiple
passage model of Salo & Laurikainen may be preferred over the classical single
passage model of Toomre & Toomre, to reproduce the H{\sc i} features in Arp72
as well as in other M-51 systems depicting similar optical and H{\sc i}
