Effect of interchain separation on the photoinduced absorption spectra of polycarbazolyldiacetylenes
The photoinduced absorption spectra of a novel polycarbazolyldiacetylene with long aliphatic chains on the carbazolyl side groups are measured and compared with those of the unsubstituted polyDCHD. The two polymers in the blue form exhibit very similar electronic absorption spectra and Raman frequencies. This fact indicates that the conjugation length of the polydiacetylene backbone is not too affected by the long substituents. In contrast, the near steady-state photoinduced absorption spectra show that different photogeneration mechanisms are involved in the two polymers. This result can be ascribed to the role played by the interchain distance in the dynamics of the relaxation processes in polydiacetylenes
Band structure and optical properties of opal photonic crystals
A theoretical approach for the interpretation of reflectance spectra of opal
photonic crystals with fcc structure and (111) surface orientation is
presented. It is based on the calculation of photonic bands and density of
states corresponding to a specified angle of incidence in air. The results
yield a clear distinction between diffraction in the direction of light
propagation by (111) family planes (leading to the formation of a stop band)
and diffraction in other directions by higher-order planes (corresponding to
the excitation of photonic modes in the crystal). Reflectance measurements on
artificial opals made of self-assembled polystyrene spheres are analyzed
according to the theoretical scheme and give evidence of diffraction by
higher-order crystalline planes in the photonic structure.Comment: to appear in PR
Long-lived photoexcited states in polydiacetylenes with different molecular and supramolecular organization
With the aim of determining the importance of the molecular and supramolecular organization on the excited states of polydiacetylenes, we have studied the photoinduced absorption spectra of the red form of poly[1,6-bis(3,6-didodecyl-N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne] (polyDCHD-S) and the results compared with those of the blue form of the same polymer. An interpretation of the data is given in terms of both the conjugation length and the interbackbone separation also in relation to the photoinduced absorption spectra of both blue and red forms of poly[1,6-bis(N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne] (polyDCHD), which does not carry the alkyl substituents on the carbazolyl side groups. Information on the above properties is derived from the analysis of the absorption and Raman spectra of this class of polydiacetylenes
Water maser variability over 20 years in a large sample of star-forming regions: the complete database
Context. Water vapor emission at 22 GHz from masers associated with
star-forming regions is highly variable. Aims. We present a database of up to
20 years of monitoring of a sample of 43 masers within star-forming regions.
The sample covers a large range of luminosities of the associated IRAS source
and is representative of the entire population of H2O masers of this type. The
database forms a good starting point for any further study of H2O maser
variability. Methods. The observations were obtained with the Medicina 32-m
radiotelescope, at a rate of 4-5 observations per year. Results. To provide a
database that can be easily accessed through the web, we give for each source:
plots of the calibrated spectra, the velocity-time-flux density plot, the light
curve of the integrated flux, the lower and upper envelopes of the maser
emission, the mean spectrum, and the rate of the maser occurrence as a function
of velocity. Figures for just one source are given in the text for
representative purposes. Figures for all the sources are given in electronic
form in the on-line appendix. A discussion of the main properties of the H2O

VLA Observations of H2O Masers in the Class 0 Protostar S106 FIR: Evidence for a 10 AU-Scale Accelerating Jet-like Flow
We conducted VLA observations at 0".06 resolution of the 22 GHz water masers
toward the Class 0 source S106 FIR (d=600 pc; 15" west of S106-IRS4) on two
epochs separated by ~3 months. Two compact clusters of the maser spots were
found in the center of the submillimeter core of S106 FIR. The separation of
the clusters was ~80 mas (48 AU) along P. A. = 70 degrees and the size of each
cluster was ~20 mas x 10 mas. The western cluster, which had three maser
components, was 7.0 km/s redshifted with respect to the ambient cloud velocity.
Each component was composed of a few spatially localized maser spots and was
aligned on a line connecting the clusters. We found relative proper motions of
the components with ~30 mas/yr (18 AU/yr) along the line. In addition, a series
of single-dish observations show that the maser components drifted with a
radial acceleration of ~1 km/s/yr.
These facts indicate that the masers could be excited by a 10 AU-scale
jet-like accelerating flow ejected from an assumed protostar located between
the two clusters. The outflow size traced by the masers was 50 AU x 5 AU after
correction for an inclination angle of 10 degrees which was derived from the
relative proper motions and radial velocities of the maser components. The
three-dimensional outflow velocity ranged from 40 to 70 km/s assuming symmetric
motions for the blue and red components. Since no distinct CO molecular
outflows have been detected so far, we suggest that S106 FIR is an extremely

Gravitational waves from coalescing binaries and Doppler experiments
Doppler tracking of interplanetary spacecraft provides the only method
presently available for broad-band searches of low frequency gravitational
waves. The instruments have a peak sensitivity around the reciprocal of the
round-trip light-time T of the radio link connecting the Earth to the
space-probe and therefore are particularly suitable to search for coalescing
binaries containing massive black holes in galactic nuclei. A number of Doppler
experiments -- the most recent involving the probes ULYSSES, GALILEO and MARS
OBSERVER -- have been carried out so far; moreover, in 2002-2004 the CASSINI
spacecraft will perform three 40 days data acquisition runs with expected
sensitivity about twenty times better than that achieved so far. Central aims
of this paper are: (i) to explore, as a function of the relevant instrumental
and astrophysical parameters, the Doppler output produced by in-spiral signals
-- sinusoids of increasing frequency and amplitude (the so-called chirp); (ii)
to identify the most important parameter regions where to concentrate intense
and dedicated data analysis; (iii) to analyze the all-sky and all-frequency
sensitivity of the CASSINI's experiments, with particular emphasis on possible

A high-sensitivity 6.7 GHz methanol maser survey toward H2O sources
We present the results of a high sensitivity survey for 6.7 GHz methanol
masers towards 22 GHz water maser using the 100 m Efflesberg telescope. A total
of 89 sources were observed and 10 new methanol masers were detected. The new
detections are relatively faint with peak flux densities between 0.5 and 4.0
Jy. A nil detection rate from low-mass star forming regions enhances the
conclusion that the masers are only associated with massive star formation.
Even the faintest methanol maser in our survey, with a luminosity of 1.1
is associated with massive stars as inferred from its

A VLA Search for Water Masers in Six HII Regions: Tracers of Triggered Low-Mass Star Formation
We present a search for water maser emission at 22 GHz associated with young
low-mass protostars in six HII regions -- M16, M20, NGC 2264, NGC 6357, S125,
and S140. The survey was conducted with the NRAO Very Large Array from 2000 to
2002. For several of these HII regions, ours are the first high-resolution
observations of water masers. We detected 16 water masers: eight in M16, four
in M20, three in S140, and one in NGC 2264. All but one of these were
previously undetected. No maser emission was detected from NGC 6357 or S125.
There are two principle results to our study. (1) The distribution of water
masers in M16 and M20 does not appear to be random but instead is concentrated
in a layer of compressed gas within a few tenths of a parsec of the ionization
front. (2) Significantly fewer masers are seen in the observed fields than
expected based on other indications of ongoing star formation, indicating that
the maser-exciting lifetime of protostars is much shorter in HII regions than
in regions of isolated star formation. Both of these results confirm
predictions of a scenario in which star formation is first triggered by shocks
driven in advance of ionization fronts, and then truncated approximately 10^5

A SuperLearner-enforced approach for the estimation of treatment effect in pediatric trials
Background: Randomized Clinical Trials (RCT) represent the gold standard among scientific evidence. RCTs are tailored to control selection bias and the confounding effect of baseline characteristics on the effect of treatment. However, trial conduction and enrolment procedures could be challenging, especially for rare diseases and paediatric research. In these research frameworks, the treatment effect estimation could be compromised. A potential countermeasure is to develop predictive models on the probability of the baseline disease based on previously collected observational data. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have recently become attractive in clinical research because of their flexibility and improved performance compared to standard statistical methods in developing predictive models. Objective: This manuscript proposes an ML-enforced treatment effect estimation procedure based on an ensemble SuperLearner (SL) approach, trained on historical observational data, to control the confounding effect. Methods: The REnal SCarring Urinary infEction trial served as a motivating example. Historical observational study data have been simulated through 10,000 Monte Carlo (MC) runs. Hypothetical RCTs have been also simulated, for each MC run, assuming different treatment effects of antibiotics combined with steroids. For each MC simulation, the SL tool has been applied to the simulated observational data. Furthermore, the average treatment effect (ATE), has been estimated on the trial data and adjusted for the SL predicted probability of renal scar. Results: The simulation results revealed an increased power in ATE estimation for the SL-enforced estimation compared to the unadjusted estimates for all the algorithms composing the ensemble SL
Theory of excited state absorptions in phenylene-based -conjugated polymers
Within a rigid-band correlated electron model for oligomers of
poly-(paraphenylene) (PPP) and poly-(paraphenylenevinylene) (PPV), we show that
there exist two fundamentally different classes of two-photon A states in
these systems to which photoinduced absorption (PA) can occur. At relatively
lower energies there occur A states which are superpositions of one
electron - one hole (1e--1h) and two electron -- two hole (2e--2h) excitations,
that are both comprised of the highest delocalized valence band and the lowest
delocalized conduction band states only. The dominant PA is to one specific
member of this class of states (the mA). In addition to the above class of
A states, PA can also occur to a higher energy kA state whose 2e--2h
component is {\em different} and has significant contributions from excitations
involving both delocalized and localized bands. Our calculated scaled energies
of the mA and the kA agree reasonably well to the experimentally
observed low and high energy PAs in PPV. The calculated relative intensities of
the two PAs are also in qualitative agreement with experiment. In the case of
ladder-type PPP and its oligomers, we predict from our theoretical work a new
intense PA at an energy considerably lower than the region where PA have been
observed currently. Based on earlier work that showed that efficient
charge--carrier generation occurs upon excitation to odd--parity states that
involve both delocalized and localized bands, we speculate that it is the
characteristic electronic nature of the kA that leads to charge generation
