Regulation of the neuronal proteasome by Zif268 (Egr1)
Most forms of neuronal plasticity are associated with induction of the transcription factor Zif268 (Egr1/Krox24/NGF-IA). In a genomewide
scan, we obtained evidence for potential modulation of proteasome subunit and regulatory genes by Zif268 in neurons, a finding of
significance considering emerging evidence that the proteasome modulates synaptic function. Bioinformatic analysis indicated that the
candidate proteasome Zif268 target genes had a rich concentration of putative Zif268 binding sites immediately upstream of the transcriptional
start sites. Regulation of the mRNAs encoding the psmb9 (Lmp2) and psme2 (PA28�) proteasome subunits, along with the
proteasome-regulatory kinase serum/glucocorticoid-regulated kinase (SGK) and the proteasome-associated antigen peptide transporter
subunit 1 (Tap1), was confirmed after transfection of a neuronal cell line with Zif268. Conversely, these mRNAs were upregulated in
cerebral cortex tissue from Zif268 knock-out mice relative to controls, confirming that Zif268 suppresses their expression in the CNS.
Transfected Zif268 reduced the activity of psmb9, SGK, and Tap1 promoter–reporter constructs. Altered psmb9, SGK, and Tap1 mRNA
levels were also observed in an in vivo model of neuronal plasticity involving Zif268 induction: the effect of haloperidol administration on
striatal gene expression. Consistent with these effects on proteasome gene expression, increased Zif268 expression suppressed proteasome
activity, whereas Zif268 knock-out mice exhibited elevated cortical proteasome activity. Our findings reveal that Zif268 regulates
the expression of proteasome and related genes in neuronal cells and provide new evidence that altered expression of proteasome activity
after Zif268 induction may be a key component of long-lasting CNS plasticity
Identification of Boundary Conditions Using Natural Frequencies
The present investigation concerns a disc of varying thickness of whose
flexural stiffness varies with the radius according to the law , where and are constants. The problem of finding boundary
conditions for fastening this disc, which are inaccessible to direct
observation, from the natural frequencies of its axisymmetric flexural
oscillations is considered. The problem in question belongs to the class of
inverse problems and is a completely natural problem of identification of
boundary conditions. The search for the unknown conditions for fastening the
disc is equivalent to finding the span of the vectors of unknown conditions
coefficients. It is shown that this inverse problem is well posed. Two theorems
on the uniqueness and a theorem on stability of the solution of this problem
are proved, and a method for establishing the unknown conditions for fastening
the disc to the walls is indicated. An approximate formula for determining the
unknown conditions is obtained using first three natural frequencies. The
method of approximate calculation of unknown boundary conditions is explained
with the help of three examples of different cases for the fastening the disc
(rigid clamping, free support, elastic fixing).

The influence of hydroalcoholic media on the performance of Grewia polysaccharide in sustained release tablets
Co-administration of drugs with alcohol can affect the plasma concentration of drugs in patients. It is also known that the excipients used in the formulation of drugs may not always be resistant to alcohol. This study evaluates effect of varying alcohol concentrations on theophylline release from two grades of Grewia mollis polysaccharides. X-ray microtomography showed that native polysaccharide formulation compacts were not homogenous after the mixing process resulting in its failure in swelling studies. Removal of starch from the native polysaccharide resulted in homogenous formulation compacts resistant to damage in high alcoholic media in pH 6.8 (40%v/v absolute ethanol). Destarched polymer compacts had a significantly higher hardness (375 N) than that of the native polysaccharide (82 N) and HPMC K4 M (146 N). Dissolution studies showed similarity at all levels of alcohol tested (f2 = 57-91) in simulated gastric media (pH 1.2). The dissolution profiles in the simulated intestinal fluids were also similar (f2 = 60-94), with the exception of the native polysaccharide in pH 6.8 (40%v/v absolute ethanol) (f2 = 43). This work highlights the properties of Grewia polysaccharide as a matrix former that can resist high alcoholic effects therefore; it may be suitable as an alternative to some of the commercially available matrix formers with wider applications for drug delivery as a cheaper alternative in the developing world
Yukawa couplings in intersecting D-brane models
We compute the Yukawa couplings among chiral fields in toroidal Type II
compactifications with wrapping D6-branes intersecting at angles. Those models
can yield realistic standard model spectrum living at the intersections. The
Yukawa couplings depend both on the Kahler and open string moduli but not on
the complex structure. They arise from worldsheet instanton corrections and are
found to be given by products of complex Jacobi theta functions with
characteristics. The Yukawa couplings for a particular intersecting brane
configuration yielding the chiral spectrum of the MSSM are computed as an
example. We also show how our methods can be extended to compute Yukawa
couplings on certain classes of elliptically fibered CY manifolds which are
mirror to complex cones over del Pezzo surfaces. We find that the Yukawa
couplings in intersecting D6-brane models have a mathematical interpretation in
the context of homological mirror symmetry. In particular, the computation of
such Yukawa couplings is related to the construction of Fukaya's category in a

Entropy of chains placed on the square lattice
We obtain the entropy of flexible linear chains composed of M monomers placed
on the square lattice using a transfer matrix approach. An excluded volume
interaction is included by considering the chains to be self-and mutually
avoiding, and a fraction rho of the sites are occupied by monomers. We solve
the problem exactly on stripes of increasing width m and then extrapolate our
results to the two-dimensional limit to infinity using finite-size scaling. The
extrapolated results for several finite values of M and in the polymer limit M
to infinity for the cases where all lattice sites are occupied (rho=1) and for
the partially filled case rho<1 are compared with earlier results. These
results are exact for dimers (M=2) and full occupation (\rho=1) and derived
from series expansions, mean-field like approximations, and transfer matrix
calculations for some other cases. For small values of M, as well as for the
polymer limit M to infinity, rather precise estimates of the entropy are

The position of graptolites within Lower Palaeozoic planktic ecosystems.
An integrated approach has been used to assess the palaeoecology of graptolites both as a discrete group and also as a part of the biota present within Ordovician and Silurian planktic realms. Study of the functional morphology of graptolites and comparisons with recent ecological analogues demonstrates that graptolites most probably filled a variety of niches as primary consumers, with modes of life related to the colony morphotype. Graptolite coloniality was extremely ordered, lacking any close morphological analogues in Recent faunas. To obtain maximum functional efficiency, graptolites would have needed varying degrees of coordinated automobility. A change in lifestyle related to ontogenetic changes was prevalent within many graptolite groups. Differing lifestyle was reflected by differing reproductive strategies, with synrhabdosomes most likely being a method for rapid asexual reproduction. Direct evidence in the form of graptolithophage 'coprolitic' bodies, as well as indirect evidence in the form of probable defensive adaptations, indicate that graptolites comprised a food item for a variety of predators. Graptolites were also hosts to a variety of parasitic organisms and provided an important nutrient source for scavenging organisms
Clastic Polygonal Networks Around Lyot Crater, Mars: Possible Formation Mechanisms From Morphometric Analysis
Polygonal networks of patterned ground are a common feature in cold-climate environments. They can form through the thermal contraction of ice-cemented sediment (i.e. formed from fractures), or the freezing and thawing of ground ice (i.e. formed by patterns of clasts, or ground deformation). The characteristics of these landforms provide information about environmental conditions. Analogous polygonal forms have been observed on Mars leading to inferences about environmental conditions. We have identified clastic polygonal features located around Lyot crater, Mars (50°N, 30°E). These polygons are unusually large (> 100 m diameter) compared to terrestrial clastic polygons, and contain very large clasts, some of which are up to 15 metres in diameter. The polygons are distributed in a wide arc around the eastern side of Lyot crater, at a consistent distance from the crater rim. Using high-resolution imaging data, we digitised these features to extract morphological information. These data are compared to existing terrestrial and Martian polygon data to look for similarities and differences and to inform hypotheses concerning possible formation mechanisms. Our results show the clastic polygons do not have any morphometric features that indicate they are similar to terrestrial sorted, clastic polygons formed by freeze-thaw processes. They are too large, do not show the expected variation in form with slope, and have clasts that do not scale in size with polygon diameter. However, the clastic networks are similar in network morphology to thermal contraction cracks, and there is a potential direct Martian analogue in a sub-type of thermal contraction polygons located in Utopia Planitia. Based upon our observations, we reject the hypothesis that polygons located around Lyot formed as freeze-thaw polygons and instead an alternative mechanism is put forward: they result from the infilling of earlier thermal contraction cracks by wind-blown material, which then became compressed and/or cemented resulting in a resistant fill. Erosion then leads to preservation of these polygons in positive relief, while later weathering results in the fracturing of the fill material to form angular clasts. These results suggest that there was an extensive area of ice-rich terrain, the extent of which is linked to ejecta from Lyot crater
Emotional Resilience in Early Childhood
To test whether the development of emotional resilience is a function of sensitive caregiving and child negative affect, we tested the joint contributions of 7-month maternal sensitivity and infant negative affect to the prediction of 33-month emotional resilience across the first 3 years of life. The aims of this study were to examine whether maternal sensitivity and infant negative affect predict long-term emotional resilience and whether this was associated with preschool behavior problems. Using a sample of 181 mother–infant dyads, we found that ( a ) maternal sensitivity at 7 months, but not infant negative affect, longitudinally predicted emotional resilience during preschool and ( b ) emotional resilience was negatively associated with anxiety/depression in preschool.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73467/1/annals.1376.033.pd
Supermassive Binaries and Extragalactic Jets
Some quasars show Doppler shifted broad emission line peaks. I give new
statistics of the occurrence of these peaks and show that, while the most
spectacular cases are in quasars with strong radio jets inclined to the line of
sight, they are also almost as common in radio-quiet quasars. Theories of the
origin of the peaks are reviewed and it is argued that the displaced peaks are
most likely produced by the supermassive binary model. The separations of the
peaks in the 3C 390.3-type objects are consistent with orientation-dependent
"unified models" of quasar activity. If the supermassive binary model is
correct, all members of "the jet set" (astrophysical objects showing jets)

Interventions for the treatment of oral and oropharyngeal cancers: surgical treatment
Background:
Surgery is an important part of the management of oral cavity cancer with regard to both the removal of the primary tumour and removal of lymph nodes in the neck. Surgery is less frequently used in oropharyngeal cancer. Surgery alone may be treatment for early‐stage disease or surgery may be used in combination with radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy/biotherapy. There is variation in the recommended timing and extent of surgery in the overall treatment regimens of people with these cancers. This is an update of a review originally published in 2007 and first updated in 2011.
Objectives:
To determine which surgical treatment modalities for oral and oropharyngeal cancers result in increased overall survival, disease‐free survival and locoregional control and reduced recurrence. To determine the implication of treatment modalities in terms of morbidity, quality of life, costs, hospital days of treatment, complications and harms.
Search methods:
Cochrane Oral Health's Information Specialist searched the following databases: Cochrane Oral Health's Trials Register (to 20 December 2017), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL; 2017, Issue 11), MEDLINE Ovid (1946 to 20 December 2017) and Embase Ovid (1980 to 20 December 2017). We searched the US National Institutes of Health Trials Registry (ClinicalTrials.gov) and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform for ongoing trials. There were no restrictions on the language or date of publication.
Selection criteria:
Randomised controlled trials where more than 50% of participants had primary tumours of the oral cavity or oropharynx, or where separate data could be extracted for these participants, and that compared two or more surgical treatment modalities, or surgery versus other treatment modalities.
Data collection and analysis:
Two or more review authors independently extracted data and assessed risk of bias. We contacted study authors for additional information as required. We collected adverse events data from included studies.
Main results:
We identified five new trials in this update, bringing the total number of included trials to 12 (2300 participants; 2148 with cancers of the oral cavity). We assessed four trials at high risk of bias, and eight at unclear. None of the included trials compared different surgical approaches for the excision of the primary tumour. We grouped the trials into seven main comparisons.
Future research may change the findings as there is only very low‐certainty evidence available for all results.
Five trials compared elective neck dissection (ND) with therapeutic (delayed) ND in participants with oral cavity cancer and clinically negative neck nodes, but differences in type of surgery and duration of follow‐up made meta‐analysis inappropriate in most cases. Four of these trials reported overall and disease‐free survival. The meta‐analyses of two trials found no evidence of either intervention leading to greater overall survival (hazard ratio (HR) 0.84, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.41 to 1.72; 571 participants), or disease‐free survival (HR 0.73, 95% CI 0.25 to 2.11; 571 participants), but one trial found a benefit for elective supraomohyoid ND compared to therapeutic ND in overall survival (RR 0.40, 95% CI 0.19 to 0.84; 67 participants) and disease‐free survival (HR 0.32, 95% CI 0.12 to 0.84; 67 participants). Four individual trials assessed locoregional recurrence, but could not be meta‐analysed; one trial favoured elective ND over therapeutic delayed ND, while the others were inconclusive.
Two trials compared elective radical ND with elective selective ND, but we were unable to pool the data for two outcomes. Neither study found evidence of a difference in overall survival or disease‐free survival. A single trial found no evidence of a difference in recurrence.
One trial compared surgery plus radiotherapy with radiotherapy alone, but data were unreliable because the trial stopped early and there were multiple protocol violations.
One trial comparing positron‐emission tomography‐computed tomography (PET‐CT) following chemoradiotherapy (with ND only if no or incomplete response) versus planned ND (either before or after chemoradiotherapy), showed no evidence of a difference in mortality (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.65 to 1.31; 564 participants). The trial did not provide usable data for the other outcomes.
Three single trials compared: surgery plus adjunctive radiotherapy versus chemoradiotherapy; supraomohyoid ND versus modified radical ND; and super selective ND versus selective ND. There were no useable data from these trials.
The reporting of adverse events was poor. Four trials measured adverse events. Only one of the trials reported quality of life as an outcome.
Authors' conclusions:
Twelve randomised controlled trials evaluated ND surgery in people with oral cavity cancers; however, the evidence available for all comparisons and outcomes is very low certainty, therefore we cannot rely on the findings. The evidence is insufficient to draw conclusions about elective ND of clinically negative neck nodes at the time of removal of the primary tumour compared to therapeutic (delayed) ND. Two trials combined in meta‐analysis suggested there is no difference between these interventions, while one trial (which evaluated elective supraomohyoid ND) found that it may be associated with increased overall and disease‐free survival. One trial found elective ND reduced locoregional recurrence, while three were inconclusive. There is no evidence that radical ND increases overall or disease‐free survival compared to more conservative ND surgery, or that there is a difference in mortality between PET‐CT surveillance following chemoradiotherapy versus planned ND (before or after chemoradiotherapy). Reporting of adverse events in all trials was poor and it was not possible to compare the quality of life of people undergoing different surgical treatments
