    Spinning in the NAPLAN ether: 'Postscript on the control societies' and the seduction of education in Australia

    This paper applies concepts Deleuze developed in his ‘Postscript on the Societies of Control’, especially those relating to modulatory power, dividuation and control, to aspects of Australian schooling to explore how this transition is manifesting itself. Two modulatory machines of assessment, NAPLAN and My Schools, are examined as a means to better understand how the disciplinary institution is changing as a result of modulation. This transition from discipline to modulation is visible in the declining importance of the disciplinary teacher/student relationship as a measure of the success of the educative process. The transition occurs through seduction because that which purports to measure classroom quality is in fact a serpent of modulation that produces simulacra of the disciplinary classroom. The effect is to sever what happens in the disciplinary space from its representations in a luminiferous ether that overlays the classroom

    Towards a wave-extraction method for numerical relativity. V. Extracting the Weyl scalars in the quasi-Kinnersley tetrad from spatial data

    We extract the Weyl scalars Ψ0\Psi_0 and Ψ4\Psi_4 in the quasi-Kinnersley tetrad by finding initially the (gauge--, tetrad--, and background--independent) transverse quasi-Kinnersley frame. This step still leaves two undetermined degrees of freedom: the ratio Ψ0/Ψ4|\Psi_0|/|\Psi_4|, and one of the phases (the product Ψ0Ψ4|\Psi_0|\cdot |\Psi_4| and the {\em sum} of the phases are determined by the so-called BB radiation scalar). The residual symmetry ("spin/boost") can be removed by gauge fixing of spin coefficients in two steps: First, we break the boost symmetry by requiring that ρ\rho corresponds to a global constant mass parameter that equals the ADM mass (or, equivalently in perturbation theory, that ρ\rho or μ\mu equal their values in the no-radiation limits), thus determining the two moduli of the Weyl scalars Ψ0,Ψ4|\Psi_0|, |\Psi_4|, while leaving their phases as yet undetermined. Second, we break the spin symmetry by requiring that the ratio π/τ\pi/\tau gives the expected polarization state for the gravitational waves, thus determining the phases. Our method of gauge fixing--specifically its second step--is appropriate for cases for which the Weyl curvature is purely electric. Applying this method to Misner and Brill--Lindquist data, we explicitly find the Weyl scalars Ψ0\Psi_0 and Ψ4\Psi_4 perturbatively in the quasi-Kinnersley tetrad.Comment: 13 page

    CFD modelling of buoyancy-driven natural ventilation opposed by wind

    This paper presents CFD simulations of natural displacement ventilation airflows in which the buoyancy force produced by a heat source is opposed by a wind force. Cases investigated focus on windbuoyancy force relationships for which a two-layer stratification is maintained. CFD predictions of the position of the interface separating the two layers and the change in reduced gravity (temperature difference) between them are compared with the analytical work and salt-bath measurements of Hunt and Linden (2000, 2005). Comparisons are good with only minor discrepancies in the interface position and a small under-prediction of the upper layer reduced gravity

    Testing a Simplified Version of Einstein's Equations for Numerical Relativity

    Solving dynamical problems in general relativity requires the full machinery of numerical relativity. Wilson has proposed a simpler but approximate scheme for systems near equilibrium, like binary neutron stars. We test the scheme on isolated, rapidly rotating, relativistic stars. Since these objects are in equilibrium, it is crucial that the approximation work well if we are to believe its predictions for more complicated systems like binaries.     Network-wide assessment of 4D trajectory adjustments using an agent-based model

    This paper presents results from the SESAR ER3 Domino project. It focuses on an ECAC-wide assessment of two 4D-adjustment mechanisms, implemented separately and conjointly. These reflect flight behaviour en-route and at-gate, optimising given (cost) objective functions. New metrics designed to capture network effects are used to analyse the results of a microscopic, agent based model. The results show that some implementations of the mechanisms allow the protection of the network from ‘domino’ effects. Airlines focusing on costs may trigger additional side-effects on passengers, displaying, in some instances, clear trade-offs between passenger- and flight-centric metrics

    Two-body and three-body substructures served as building blocks in small spin-3 condensates

    It was found that stable few-body spin-structures, pairs and triplexes, may exist as basic constituents in small spin-3 condensates, and they will play the role as building blocks when the parameters of interaction are appropriate.
