Jurors’ and judges’ evaluation of defendants with autism and the impact on sentencing : a systematic Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) review of autism spectrum disorder in the courtroom
Concern has been highlighted in the literature regarding how juries and judges handle cases which involve a defendant with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The relatively little research on judicial perceptions or decision-making regarding individuals with ASD indicates that judges have limited understanding and familiarity with high-functioning ASD (hfASD) and ASD. The present systematic review will identify studies which investigate jurors’ (eg using mock jurors) and/or judges’ evaluations of defendants with ASD and studies which investigate whether the defendant diagnosis of ASD impacts on sentencing. Only four studies were identified which investigated jurors’ and/or judges’ evaluations of a defendant with an ASD or investigated whether the defendant diagnosis of ASD impacts on sentencing. Further research is recommended which should include an evaluation of cases involving a defendant with an hfASD or ASD diagnosis comparing charges, pleas entered, procedural adjustments at court, evidence adduced about the defendant’s condition, directions to juries, judicial remarks on the evidence (eg summing-up for the jury), verdicts and sentencing. This would enable the assessment of the specific offending behaviour and disorder of the defendant, and how these may be relevant to their mental capacity and culpability
Large enhancement from freeze out
Freeze out of particles across three dimensional space-time hypersurface is
discussed in a simple kinetic model. The final momentum distribution of emitted
particles, for freeze out surfaces with space-like normal, shows a
non-exponential transverse momentum spectrum. The slope parameter of the
distribution increases with increasing , in agreement with recently

Stability analysis of electrical powered wheelchair-mounted robotic-assisted transfer device
The ability of people with disabilities to live in their homes and communities with maximal independence often hinges, at least in part, on their ability to transfer or be transferred by an assistant. Because of limited resources and the expense of personal care, robotic transfer assistance devices will likely be in great demand. An easy-to-use system for assisting with transfers, attachable to electrical powered wheelchairs (EPWs) and readily transportable, could have a significant positive effect on the quality of life of people with disabilities. We investigated the stability of our newly developed Strong Arm, which is attached and integrated with an EPW to assist with transfers. The stability of the system was analyzed and verified by experiments applying different loads and using different system configurations. The model predicted the distributions of the system’s center of mass very well compared with the experimental results. When real transfers were conducted with 50 and 75 kg loads and an 83.25 kg dummy, the current Strong Arm could transfer all weights safely without tip-over. Our modeling accurately predicts the stability of the system and is suitable for developing better control algorithms to enhance the safety of the device
Non-equilibrated post freeze out distributions
We discuss freeze out on the hypersurface with time-like normal vector,
trying to answer how realistic is to assume thermal post freeze out
distributions for measured hadrons. Using simple kinetic models for gradual
freeze out we are able to generate thermal post FO distribution, but only in
highly simplified situation. In a more advanced model, taking into account
rescattering and re-thermalization, the post FO distribution gets more
complicated. The resulting particle distributions are in qualitative agreement
with the experimentally measured pion spectra. Our study also shows that the
obtained post FO distribution functions, although analytically very different
from the Juttner distribution, do look pretty much like thermal distributions

Trends and socioeconomic inequalities in cancer survival in England and Wales up to 2001.
We examined national trends and socioeconomic inequalities in cancer survival in England and Wales during the 1990s, using population-based data on 2.2 million patients who were diagnosed with one of the 20 most common cancers between 1986 and 1999 and followed up to 2001. Patients were assigned to one of five deprivation categories (from 'affluent' to 'deprived') using characteristics of their electoral ward of residence at diagnosis. We estimated relative survival up to 5 years after diagnosis, adjusting separately in each deprivation category for background mortality by age, sex and calendar period. We estimated trends in survival and in the difference in survival between deprivation categories ('deprivation gap') over the periods 1986-90, 1991-95 and 1996-99. We used period analysis to examine likely survival rates in the near future. Survival improved for most cancers in both sexes during the 1990s, and appears likely to continue improving for most cancers in the near future. The deprivation gap in survival between rich and poor was wider for patients diagnosed in the late 1990s than in the late 1980s. Increases in cancer survival in England and Wales during the 1990s are shown to be significantly associated with a widening deprivation gap in survival
Flow at the SPS and RHIC as a Quark Gluon Plasma Signature
Radial and elliptic flow in non-central heavy ion collisions can constrain
the effective Equation of State(EoS) of the excited nuclear matter. To this
end, a model combining relativistic hydrodynamics and a hadronic transport
code(RQMD [17]) is developed. For an EoS with a first order phase transition,
the model reproduces both the radial and elliptic flow data at the SPS. With
the EoS fixed from SPS data, we quantify predictions at RHIC where the Quark
Gluon Plasma(QGP) pressure is expected to drive additional radial and elliptic
flow. Currently, the strong elliptic flow observed in the first RHIC
measurements does not conclusively signal this nascent QGP pressure. Additional

Two-step stabilization of orbital order and the dynamical frustration of spin in the model charge-transfer insulator KCuF3
We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of KCuF3, which
offers - because of this material's relatively simple lattice structure and
valence configuration (d9, i.e., one hole in the d-shell) - a particularly
clear view of the essential role of the orbital degree of freedom in governing
the dynamical coupling between the spin and lattice degrees of freedom. We
present Raman and x-ray scattering evidence that the phase behaviour of KCuF3
is dominated above the Neel temperature (T_N = 40 K) by coupled orbital/lattice
fluctuations that are likely associated with rotations of the CuF6 octahedra,
and we show that these orbital fluctuations are interrupted by a static
structural distortion that occurs just above T_N. A detailed model of the
orbital and magnetic phases of KCuF3 reveals that these orbital fluctuations -
and the related frustration of in-plane spin-order-are associated with the
presence of nearly degenerate low-energy spin-orbital states that are highly
susceptible to thermal fluctuations over a wide range of temperatures. A
striking implication of these results is that the ground state of KCuF3 at
ambient pressure lies near a quantum critical point associated with an
orbital/spin liquid phase that is obscured by emergent Neel ordering of the
spins; this exotic liquid phase might be accessible via pressure studies.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Salt-inducible kinases (SIKs) regulate TGFβ-mediated transcriptional and apoptotic responses
The signalling pathways initiated by members of the transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) family of cytokines control many metazoan cellular processes, including proliferation and differentiation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and apoptosis. TGFβ signalling is therefore strictly regulated to ensure appropriate context-dependent physiological responses. In an attempt to identify novel regulatory components of the TGFβ signalling pathway, we performed a pharmacological screen by using a cell line engineered to report the endogenous transcription of the TGFβ-responsive target gene PAI-1. The screen revealed that small molecule inhibitors of salt-inducible kinases (SIKs) attenuate TGFβ-mediated transcription of PAI-1 without affecting receptor-mediated SMAD phosphorylation, SMAD complex formation or nuclear translocation. We provide evidence that genetic inactivation of SIK isoforms also attenuates TGFβ-dependent transcriptional responses. Pharmacological inhibition of SIKs by using multiple small-molecule inhibitors potentiated apoptotic cell death induced by TGFβ stimulation. Our data therefore provide evidence for a novel function of SIKs in modulating TGFβ-mediated transcriptional and cellular responses.</p
