Acoustic measurement of the low-energy excitations in Nd2-xCexCuO4
The complex dynamic Young's modulus of ceramic Nd2-xCexCuO4 with x = 0, 0.05
and 0.20 has been measured from 1.5 to 100 K at frequencies of 1-10 kHz. In the
undoped sample the modulus starts decreasing below ~20 K, instead of
approaching a constant value as in a normal solid. The modulus minimum has been
interpreted in terms of paraelastic contribution from the relaxation of the
Nd^3+ 4f electrons between the levels of the ground state doublet, which is
split by the interaction with the antiferromagnetically ordered Cu sublattice.
The value of the splitting is found to be 0.34 meV, in excellent agreement with
inelastic neutron scattering, infrared and specific heat experiments. With
doping, the anomaly shifts to lower temperature and decreases in amplitude,
consistently with a reduction of the local field from the Cu sublattice.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
Anelastic relaxation process of polaronic origin in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4}: interaction between the charge stripes and pinning centers
The evolution of an anelastic relaxation process occurring around 80 K in
La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} at a measuring frequency of ~1 kHz has been followed from x
= 0.0075 to the overdoped region, x = 0.2, where it disappears. The dependence
of the peak intensity on doping is consistent with a polaronic mechanism,
identified with the disordered charge stripes overcoming pinning centers. A
marked decrease of the peak amplitude occurs at x > 0.045, the same doping
range where a change of the stripe order from parallel to diagonal with respect
to the Cu-O bonds has been observed by neutron diffraction. Both the energy
barrier and peak amplitude also exhibit a rise near x = 1/8.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Pinning of the domain walls of the cluster spin-glass phase in LTT La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4
We compare the low frequency (~1 kHz) anelastic spectra of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4
and La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 at x = 0.03 and 0.06 in the temperature region where the
freezing into the cluster spin-glass (CSG) phase occurs and is accompanied by
an increase of the acoustic absorption. The dependence of the amplitude of the
anelastic relaxation on doping is explained in terms of movement of the domain
walls (DW) in the CSG phase between the Sr (Ba) pinning points. The LBCO sample
at x = 0.06 transforms into the LTT structure below 40 K and the amplitude of
the anelastic anomaly is 7 times smaller than expected, indicating pinning of
the DW which run parallel to the LTT modulation. Such DW can be identified with
the stripes of high hole density, and the present measurements show that they
are mobile between the Sr (Ba) pinning points down to few kelvin, but become
static in the presence of LTT modulation also far from the condition x = 1/8
for commensurability between stripe and lattice periodicities.Comment: 4 figure
Obfuscation-based malware update: A comparison of manual and automated methods

This article is an extension of [4]a, and describes the procedure for malware updating, that is, to take obsolete malware that is already detectable by antiviruses, update it through obfuscation techniques and thus making it undetectable again. As the updating of malware is generally performed manually, an automatic solution is presented together with a comparison from the standpoint of cost and processing time. Anelastic relaxation and La NQR in LaSrCuO around the critical Sr content x=0.02
Anelastic relaxation and La NQR relaxation measurements in
LaSrCuO for Sr content x around 2 and 3 percent, are presented
and discussed in terms of spin and lattice excitations and ordering processes.
It is discussed how the phase diagram of LaSrCuO at the
boundary between the antiferromagnetic (AF) and the spin-glass phase (x = 0.02)
could be more complicate than previous thought, with a transition to a
quasi-long range ordered state at T = 150 K, as indicated by recent neutron
scattering data. On the other hand, the La NQR spectra are compatible
with a transition to a conventional AF phase around T = 50 K, in agreement with
the phase diagram commonly accepted in the literature. In this case the
relaxation data, with a peak of magnetic origin in the relaxation rate around
150 K at 12 MHz and the anelastic counterparts around 80 K in the kHz range,
yield the first evidence in LaSrCuO of freezing involving
simultaneously lattice and spin excitations. This excitation could correspond

The sustainability of communicative packaging concepts in the food supply chain. A case study: part 1. Life cycle assessment
Purpose In recent years, a new perspective for food packaging has emerged as a result of several issues like quality, safety, competitive prices or providing of useful information to consumers. This new perspective is called communicative packaging. Communicative packaging may influence consumers/companies on purchasing decisions. Since the environmental evaluation of such systems has not yet been performed, this paper is focused on the environmental evaluation of a flexible best-before-date (FBBD) communicative device on a packaging consumer unit and its implications on reducing environmental impacts related to fresh products. This consumer unit consists of a nanoclay-based polylactic acid tray filled with pork chops. Methods The environmental assessment of the consumer unit was made through life cycle assessment (LCA) using a cradle-to-gate approach. Environmental impacts were assessed according to the Eco-Indicator 99 v 2.1 methodology in Individualist (I) perspective. Results and discussion Several results were obtained from the LCA. With regard to environmental impacts of the FBBD, most of them were due to the paper substrate used for the manufacture of this communicative packaging concept as well as to the transports for delivering the components of the FBBD communicative device. On the other hand, when environmental impacts of packaging system with and without FBBD were compared, a large environmental load was detected for the system that has the communicative device affixed as a result of the higher weight of the package. However, the environmental load caused by the use of the FBBD was minimal in comparison with the total environmental load of the whole packaging system. On the contrary, the consumer unit that has the communicative device affixed showed less environmental burden than the consumer unit that has not affixed the device. This was due to the environmental benefits that the communicative device provides by reducing the amount of out-of-date packaged products at retailer outlets. Conclusions The use of a FBBD contributes to minimize environmental burdens related to the production, packaging and delivery of pork chops since it facilitates a dynamic control of out-of-date products even though the consumer unit with FBBD weighs 1 g more than the consumer unit that does not use the communicative device. Recommendations The results presented in this paper are estimated results of a specific case study for a prototype of communicative packaging device. Consequently, these results must be considered as a first approach according to future developments on communicative packaging
Effects of date palm fruit extracts on skin mucosal immunity, immune related genes expression and growth performance of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fry
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of date palm fruit extracts (DPFE) on skin mucosal immunity, immune related genes expression and growth performance of fry common carp (Cyprinus carpio). One hundred and twenty specimens (4.06 ± 0.13 g) were supplied and allocated into six aquaria; specimens in three aquaria were fed non-supplemented diet (control) while the fish in the other 3 aquaria were fed with DPFE at 200 ml kg-1. At the end of feeding trial (8 weeks) skin mucus immune parameters (total immunoglobulins, lysozyme, protease and alkaline phosphatase activity) and immune related gene expression (tumor necrosis factor α [tnfa], lysozyme [ly] and interleukin-1-beta, [il1b]) in the head-kidney were studied. The results revealed that feeding carp fry with 200 ml kg-1 DPFE remarkably elevated the three skin mucus immune parameters tested (P 0.05) compared to control fish (fed control diet). Furthermore, growth performance parameters were significantly improved in fry fed DPFE (P < 0.05). More studies are needed to understand different aspects of DPFE administration in fry mucosal immunity. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd
Viscous pumping inspired by flexible propulsion
Fluid-suspended microorganisms have evolved different swimming and feeding
strategies in order to cope with an environment dominated by viscous effects.
For instance ciliated organisms rely on the collective motion of flexible
appendices to move and feed. By performing a non-reciprocal motion, flexible
filaments can produce a net propulsive force, or pump fluid, in the absence of
inertia. Inspired by such fundamental concept, we propose a strategy to produce
macroscopic pumping and mixing in creeping flow. We measure experimentally the
net motion of a Newtonian viscous fluid induced by the reciprocal motion of a
flapper. When the flapper is rigid no net motion is induced. In contrast, when
the flapper is made of a flexible material, a net fluid pumping is measured. We
quantify the effectiveness of this pumping strategy and show that optimal
pumping is achieved when the length of the flapper is on the same order as the
elasto-hydrodynamic penetration length. We finally discuss the possible
applications of flexible impellers in mixing operations at low Reynolds
numbers
