High-power Ka-band amplifier
Development of a high-power tube suitable to power a Ka-band (34.5-GHz) antenna transmitter located at the Goldstone, California, tracking station is continuing. The University of Maryland Laboratory for Plasma Research and JPL are conducting a joint effort to test the feasibility of phase locking a second-harmonic gyrotron both by direct injection at the output cavity and by using a priming cavity to bunch the electrons in the beam. This article describes several design options and the results of computer simulation testing
Voltage source ac-to-dc converters for high-power transmitters
This work was done to optimize the design of the components used for the beam power supply, which is a component of the transmitters in the Deep Space Network (DSN). The major findings are: (1) the difference in regulation between a six-pulse and a twelve-pulse converter is at most 7 percent worse for the twelve-pulse converter; (2) the commutation overlap angle of a current source converter equals that of a voltage source converter with continuous line currents; (3) the sources of uncharacteristic harmonics are identified with SPICE simulation; (4) the use of an imperfect phase-shifting transformer for the twelve-pulse converter generates a harmonic at six times the line frequency; and (5) the assumptions usually made in analyzing converters can be relaxed with SPICE simulation. The results demonstrate the suitability of using SPICE simulation to obtain detailed performance predictions of ac-to-dc converters
Long time behavior of a mean-field model of interacting neurons
We study the long time behavior of the solution to some McKean-Vlasov
stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by a Poisson process. In
neuroscience, this SDE models the asymptotic dynamic of the membrane potential
of a spiking neuron in a large network. We prove that for a small enough
interaction parameter, any solution converges to the unique (in this case)
invariant measure. To this aim, we first obtain global bounds on the jump rate
and derive a Volterra type integral equation satisfied by this rate. We then
replace temporary the interaction part of the equation by a deterministic
external quantity (we call it the external current). For constant current, we
obtain the convergence to the invariant measure. Using a perturbation method,
we extend this result to more general external currents. Finally, we prove the
result for the non-linear McKean-Vlasov equation

Design and test of a 2.25-MW transformer rectifier assembly
A new 2.25-MW transformer rectifier assembly was fabricated for DSS-13 at Goldstone, California. The transformer rectifier will provide constant output power of 2.25 MW at any voltage from 31 kV to 125 kV. This will give a new capability of 1 MW of RF power at X-band, provided appropriate microwave tubes are in the power amplifier. A description of the design and test results is presented
The Rapid Evolution of Queer Language
**This essay contains terminology that may be considered offensive to some. Names have been changed to protect identities.
“You remember Kayla?”
“Kayla Riddle?”
“Yeah. You know she’s a boy now?”
“Oh no shit! Not surprised, kinda saw that one coming.”
As I sit with a high school friend on back porch of her trailer, I quickly realize that most of my middle-class, leftist/liberal friends would jump on how we phrase Kai’s coming out. But sitting here, helping Amber figure out how much dope she’d need to sling to make rent this month, calling out mildly transphobic language isn’t a priority. [excerpt
Degradation of organic compounds and production of activated species in Dielectric Barrier Discharges and Glidarc reactors
Major sterilization mechanisms are related to atoms and radicals, charged
parti-cles, excited molecules, ozone, and UV radiation. The ROS (Reactive
Oxygen Species) are well known as evildoers. These species are easily created
in ambient air and water and they live long enough to reach the cell and attack
the organic matter. Test molecules conversion in dry and wet air is studied
using Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) and Gliding Arc Reactors (GAR). The
effects of tem-perature and energy deposition into the media on the active
species production and then on the organic compounds degradation are presented
for two non thermal plasma reactors: DBD and GAR. Main production species
investigated are OH, O3, NOx, CO and CxHyOz by-products. It is shown from
experiment analysis that the reactive species production is quite different
from one reactor to another. GAR and pulsed DBD are two chemical processing
ways in which the temperature of heavy species in ionized gas is determinant.
By reviewing the species production obtained from both reactors, a discussion
is open about plasma decontamination.Comment: NATO-AdvancedStudy Institute on Plasma Assisted Decontamination of
