An improved method for testing performance of vidicons during vibration
Vidicon electron beam modulation is used for checking the performance of vidicons in mechanical vibration tests. The vidicon electron beam is modulated with an external signal during the write period thereby storing the image on the vidicon face
Root extraction in one-relator groups and slenderness
In this note we strengthen a result of B. B. Newman and use it to prove a
conjecture of J. Nakamura stated in \cite{Na} that torsion-free one-relator
groups are noncommutatively slender
Orbit IMU alinement interpretation of onboard display data
The space shuttle inertial measurement unit (IMU) alinement algorith was examined to determine the most important alinement starpair selection criterion. Three crew displayed parameters were considered: (1) the results of the separation angle difference (SAD) check for each starpair; (2) the separation angle of each starpair; and (3) the age of each star measurement. It was determined that the SAD for each pair cannot be used to predict the IMu alinement accuracy. If the age of each star measurement is less than approximately 30 minutes, time is a relatively unimportant factor and the most important alinement pair selection criterion is the starpair separation angle. Therefore, when there are three available alinement starpairs and all measurements were taken within the last 30 minutes, the pair with the separation angle closest to 90 degrees should be selected for IMU alinement
Low Temperature AC Conductivity in BSCCO (2212)
We report measurements of anamolously large dissipative conductivities in
BiSrCaCuO(2212) at low temperatures. We have measured the complex conductivity
of BSCCO thin films at 100-600 GHz as a function of doping from the underdoped
to the overdoped state. At low temperatures there exists a residual dissipative
conductivity which scales with the T=0 superfluid density as the doping is
varied. This residual dissipative conductivity is larger than the possible
contribution from a thermal population of quasiparticles at the d-wave gap
nodes.Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of the 22nd International Low
Temperature Physics Conference. To be published in Physica B

Onorbit IMU alignment error budget
The Star Tracker, Crew Optical Alignment Sight (COAS), and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) from a complex navigation system with a multitude of error sources were combined. A complete list of the system errors is presented. The errors were combined in a rational way to yield an estimate of the IMU alignment accuracy for STS-1. The expected standard deviation in the IMU alignment error for STS-1 type alignments was determined to be 72 arc seconds per axis for star tracker alignments and 188 arc seconds per axis for COAS alignments. These estimates are based on current knowledge of the star tracker, COAS, IMU, and navigation base error specifications, and were partially verified by preliminary Monte Carlo analysis
Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase Inhibition for Ocular Diseases: Vision for the Future
Ocular diseases cause visual impairment and blindness, imposing a devastating impact on quality of life and a substantial societal economic burden. Many such diseases lack universally effective pharmacotherapies. Therefore, understanding the mediators involved in their pathophysiology is necessary for the development of therapeutic strategies. To this end, the hydrolase activity of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) has been explored in the context of several eye diseases, due to its implications in vascular diseases through metabolism of bioactive epoxygenated fatty acids. In this mini-review, we discuss the mounting evidence associating sEH with ocular diseases and its therapeutic value as a target. Substantial data link sEH with the retinal and choroidal neovascularization underlying diseases such as wet age-related macular degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity, and proliferative diabetic retinopathy, although some conflicting results pose challenges for the synthesis of a common mechanism. sEH also shows therapeutic relevance in non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and diabetic keratopathy, and sEH inhibition has been tested in a uveitis model. Various approaches have been implemented to assess sEH function in the eye, including expression analyses, genetic manipulation, pharmacological targeting of sEH, and modulation of certain lipid metabolites that are upstream and downstream of sEH. On balance, sEH inhibition shows considerable promise for treating multiple eye diseases. The possibility of local delivery of inhibitors makes the eye an appealing target for future sEH drug development initiatives
