    Get PDF
The need for countries to become less dependent on fossil fuels has been a determining factor in recent years due to increasing energy and comfort concerns in modern building design. Therefore, the maximization of the use of renewable energies, like the sun, and the use of natural energy flows become strategies to explore. There are already passive building systems that show interesting performances. Different studies have proved that the above-mentioned systems can lead to important energy savings. However, these systems have their limitations and new innovative building solutions are needed, mainly in the field of passive solar energy collection and natural ventilation strategies. Furthermore, building envelopes face nowadays a new paradigm in which buildings need to be more reactive and adaptive to external climate changes and indoor thermal comfort demands. Hence, this paper makes a review of the most recent patents on building solar air systems that make use of solar energy to induce the buoyancy effect for heating, cooling and ventilating. The patents presented demonstrate the increasing tendency in the development of building passive solutions that can satisfy, in just one system, more than one role: heating, cooling and ventilation. The present paper was performed within the framework of a research project on Low Energy/High Comfort Building Renewal, PTDC/ECM/67373/2006, sponsored by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)

Motivations and factors influencing member recruitment, maintenance and recommendation in membership associations : the case of AAACM

This thesis aimed at gaining insights on motivations and factors that influence membership recruitment, maintenance and advocacy, followed by the identification of putative criteria for segmentation, in the context of the association of former students of military school (AAACM), a non-for-profit organization that focuses primarily in philanthropy towards this specific community of individuals, and in developing a diverse set of actions, contributing to strengthen bonds between them. Moreover, the information collected was used to identify the main strategic opportunities to pursue and respective drivers to target them. In alignment with the available literature, the results identified three main motivations for joining AAACM, which were social responsibility (expressive), professional interest (career-related) and relationships and leisure (instrumental). By analyzing how these motivations were expressed, five different segments were identified (social creatures, all-rounders, career-driven, indifferent and humanistic), which exhibited different combinations of these motivations. As for member retention factors, trust and satisfaction showed to be directly related to continued fee payment, and their variability among segments was consistent with their fee payment rates. Unfortunately, it was not possible to link any of the studied variables to member recommendation. Finally, these findings were key in uncovering the strategic priorities for AAACM, which consist on raising satisfaction levels in what concerns events and communication, with direct impact in member retention, increase engagement with the career-driven segment, which is clearly underserved and dissatisfied, and explore how trust levels, critical for member retention, can be increased.

Optimisation of Nearly Zero Energy Building Envelope for Passive Thermal Comfort in Southern Europe

    Get PDF
The pursuit of sustainable and energy-efficient construction is vital to mitigate climate change and reduce carbon emissions. The application of the concept of nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) is now a reality for new buildings in the European Union, helping to achieve those goals. However, there is significant complexity in achieving acceptable thermal comfort levels in warmer climates such as the one in Southern Europe. This study carried out a multi-objective optimisation of the nZEB envelope using current construction solutions and nZEB regulations currently in force in different climate zones in this region, aiming to reduce thermal discomfort according to EN 16798-1. The results indicate that passive measures induced by regulatory requirements can significantly reduce discomfort at an affordable cost. However, great caution must be taken in relation to regulatory requirements, mainly for the cooling season, aiming to avoid summer overheating of dwellings and guaranteeing that nZEBs buildings are sustainable and comfortable in the Mediterranean climate regions. In addition, designers should be aware that increasing the insulation layer beyond regulatory requirements does not necessarily imply an increase in passive thermal comfort. Often, this implies, in addition to an increase in construction costs, an increase in discomfort, particularly during the cooling season.</jats:p

Summer Thermal Conditions in Outdoor Public Spaces: A Case Study in a Mediterranean Climate

    Get PDF
Comfort in public spaces is essential to their attractiveness and continued role in improving human quality of life. Acceptable thermal conditions are determinant to ensuring users' comfort. This study undertakes an assessment of three urban sites in Arouca, in the north of Portugal, using ENVI-met software. Simulations test the influence of pavement and facade covering material, vegetation, and site morphology. The climate of the region is classified as Mediterranean Csb, with rainy winters and dry and mildly warm summers. A typical summer day is considered. The results reveal that a combination of factors might lead to thermal discomfort even in this mild climate on an average day, mainly due to heat exchange by radiation. In addition, the impact of alterations to surface properties depends on the morphological characteristics of the site, e.g., high albedo of the pavement may lead to a decrease or an increase in mean radiant temperature, depending on the space. This variability is present in the effects observed at the studied sites. A high facade albedo always contributes, in these cases, to thermal discomfort. The conclusions of the present study highlight the importance of performing a specific study for each urban site whenever an intervention is to be planned

A Patient With Mental Disorder Wrongly Detained in a European Migrant Detention Centre

    Get PDF
The admission of undocumented migrants and refugees to detention centres (DC) has been systematically associated with several poor mental health outcomes. Much less is known about people with mental health disorders, non-migrants, who might be wrongfully committed to these facilities. This article draws on Dave's case, where a German citizen was detained in a migrant DC in Porto. The patient was later treated and diagnosed with schizophrenia. In light of another case report, we conceptualize the "Cornelia's phenomenon" by which a person with full citizenship rights but with a severe mental disorder is wrongly committed to a DC. We hypothesize that this worrisome phenomenon is underestimated, and we will discuss how pre-existent psychopathology might predispose vulnerable people to this situation. We will discuss the negative impact that detention might have on these patients, proposing solutions that might amend this worrisome phenomenon.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
