Robustness of computer algorithms to simulate optimal experimentation problems.
Three methods have been developed by the authors for solving optimal experimentation problems. David Kendrick (1981, 2002, Ch.10) uses quadratic approximation of the value function and linear approximation of the equation of motion to simulate general optimal experimentation (active learning) problems. Beck and Volker Wieland (2002) use dynamic programming methods to develop an algorithm for optimal experimentation problems. Cosimano (2003) and Cosimano and Gapen (2005) use the Perturbation method to develop an algorithm for solving optimal experimentation problems. The perturbation is in the neighborhood of the augmented linear regulator problems of Hansen and Sargent (2004). In this paper we take an example from Beck and Wieland which fits into the setup of all three algorithms. Using this example we examine the cost and benefits of the various algorithms for solving optimal experimentation problems.
Capital trading, stock trading, and the inflation tax on equity: a note
The authors show that there is more responsiveness of consumption and output to changes in the money supply than exists in the standard neoclassical growth models.Capital investments
Fil: Castiglia, Romina Jessica. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Adolescents and Marijuana Use: The Affects of Peer and Parent Relationships and Substance Abuse Education.
The purpose of this study was to analyze gender, race, substance abuse programs such as Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), parents, and peers and their ability to influence or predict adolescents and their decisions to use marijuana. All of the variables used for this study came from secondhand data collected by Esbensen and Osgood (1999), Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.). The analysis revealed that males are more likely to have ever used marijuana, that mixed race adolescents have a higher rate than other races to have ever used marijuana, that when adolescents complete the substance abuse program, D.A.R.E. have a lower rate than those who did not complete the program, adolescents are less likely to have ever used marijuana when their parents know where they are, and adolescents are more likely to have ever used marijuana when they have friends who use marijuana

Seroprevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen among pregnant women attending the Hospital for Women & Children in Koutiala, Mali
Objective. To establish the rate of seroprevalence of the hepatitis B surface antigen in pregnant women in south-eastern Mali, and to decrease mother-to-child transmission. Methods. In a descriptive cross-sectional comparison study, 3 659 pregnant women attending a non-governmental hospital in Koutiala, Mali, during 2008 and 2009 were screened for the hepatitis B surface antigen during antenatal clinic attendance or when admitted for delivery. A chart review compared the hepatitis B virus (HBV)-positive women to HBV-negative women used as controls to identify potential risk factors for HBsAg positivity. The variables compared were age, parity, type of genital excision, birthweight of baby and HIV status. Results. A total of 293 (8.0%) pregnant women tested positive for HBsAg. Their average age was 27.6 years, average parity of 2.8 births, 90% had Type 2 genital excision, 21% had low-birthweight infants, and 14 (0.4%) women also tested positive for HIV. Infants born to HbsAg-positive women were immunised with the hepatitis B vaccine in the delivery room. Two hundred and eighty-four HBVnegative women were compared with the HBV-positive women. None of the differences of means or relationships was statistically insignificant. Conclusion. In view of the high endemicity and lack of easily identifiable risk factors, free maternal HBV screening should be provided to all women in Mali, and the infants born to HBsAgpositive women should be immunised within 12 hours of birth.
