AIM: The aim of this study is to present a case of Riga-Fede disease (RFD). RFD is a benign and uncommon mucosal disorder, characterized by an ulceration of the tongue, often caused by repetitive traumatic injuries due to backward and forward movements of the tongue over the mandibular anterior incisors. RFD is most commonly associated with the eruption of primary lower incisor in older infants or natal-neonatal teeth in newborns. METHODS: A 2-month-old female infant was referred to our Paediatric Dentistry Unit for ulceration (13 mm diameter) on the ventral surface of the tongue and neonatal teeth. The extraction of neonatal teeth was selected as treatment of choice, over more conservative treatments, for the rapid resolution of the lesion and for the limited risk of inadequate nutrients intake. The extracted teeth underwent a macroscopic/microscopic examination. The complete healing of the lesion took 4 weeks; subsequently, the infant, revised at the 1-year follow-up visit. CONCLUSION: Early detection of RFD is recommended because such lesions properly may induce deformity or mutilation of tongue, dehydration, inadequate nutrients intake by the infant and growth retardatio

Thermal-induced phase transitions in self-assembled mesostructured films studied by small-angle X-ray scattering

Two examples of phase transition in self-assembled mesostructured hybrid thin films are reported. The materials have been synthesized using tetraethoxysilane as the silica source hydrolyzed with or without the addition of methyltriethoxysilane. The combined use of transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering and computer simulation has been introduced to achieve a clear identification of the organized phases. A structural study of the self-assembled mesophases as a function of thermal treatment has allowed the overall phase transition to be followed. The initial symmetries of mesophases in as-deposited films have been linked to those observed in samples after thermal treatment. The monodimensional shrinkage of silica films during calcination has induced a phase transition from face-centered orthorhombic to body-centered cubic. In hybrid films, instead, the phase transition has not involved a change in the unit cell but a contraction of the cell parameter normal to the substrate

The ability to precisely trap, transport and manipulate micrometer-sized objects, including biological cells, DNA-coated microspheres and microorganisms, is very important in life science studies and biomedical applications. In this study, acoustic radiation force in an ultrasonic standing wave field is used for micro-objects manipulation, a technique termed as acoustophoresis. Free surfaces of liquid droplets are used as sound reflectors to confine sound waves inside the droplets. Two techniques were developed for precise control of droplet shapes: edge pinning and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface pinning. For all tested droplet shapes, including circular, annular and rectangular, our experiments show that polymer micro particles can be manipulated by ultrasound and form into a variety of patterns, for example, concentric rings and radial lines in an annular droplet. The complexity of the pattern increases with increasing frequency, and the observations are in line with simulation results. The acoustic manipulation technique developed here has the potential to be integrated into a more complex on-chip microfluidic circuit. Especially because our method is well compatible with electrowetting technology, which is a powerful tool for manipulating droplets with free surfaces, the combination of the two methods can provide more versatile manipulation abilities and may bring a wealth of novel applications. In the end, we demonstrate for the first time that acoustophoresis can be used for manipulating Caenorhabditis elegans

Silica-germania thin films are important materials for photonic applications, but synthesis of these films is quite difficult to achieve especially with the task of obtaining a homogeneous structure. We have prepared mesoporous silica-germania films via evaporation-induced self-assembly from ethanolic solutions of Si and Ge chlorides, using a triblock copolymer as the templating agent. The mesostructure has been found to have tetragonal symmetry, and the degree of order decreased with increasing Ge content. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has shown that the chemical composition of the films is close to the nominal composition. Infrared analysis has revealed that the pore walls are highly condensed and residual hydroxyls are present as isolated. or hydrogen bonded silanols in short chains. UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra have been correlated with the presence of photoactive oxygen-deficient Ge2+ centers which can give rise to a variation in the refractive index upon high-power density UV irradiation

Mobile adoption has seen an exponential increase worldwide in recent years, which has also been reflected in the number of mobile applications, or apps. Many companies have developed their own apps to display their brand entities and have started using them as a direct marketing channel with push notifications, messages displayed on their mobile device screen. This research seeks to understand the extent of the impact on purchasing behavior of push notifications sent by branded applications from Portuguese supermarket chains. It also aims to segment the results to different buyer groups based on psychographic variables. This research was conducted by adopting a quantitative approach and non-probabilistic sampling. With an online questionnaire, 265 responses were collected and treated with statistical procedures such as descriptive, multivariate and cluster analysis. The findings confirm that customers who received push notifications had a higher average monthly spend in supermarkets than customers with branded apps who received no push notifications. However, these results were observed only for buyers deeply involved in all attributes of the purchase and for buyers with a greater concern for the products. Academically, this dissertation contributes to the discussion of push notifications as a direct marketing channel and the effects of customer characteristics on the effect of direct marketing. This research also provides insight to the marketer, stating that push notifications can be used to drive users' offline purchases.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The doctoral thesis concerns the relationship existing between the claim for the fulfilment of the agreement and the claim for its resolution according to article 1453 of the Italian Civil Code. In particular, the thesis tries to check if there are any limits (and, in this case, what kind of limits there are) beyond which the substitution of a claim to the other one is no more possible during the trial and also from a substantial point of view. The analysis goes on with the consideration of the relationship existing between the two claims in the French private law, according to article 1184 of the French Code Civil, in order to check if in that system there is a similar question. The thesis goes on with the comparison of the rules existing in the two systems in order to verify if beyond the differences and beyond the fact that in the French system there is much more freedom for the substitution of a claim to the other one, the principles and the conclusions are quite the same
