Search for eta-mesic Helium with the WASA-at-COSY detector

A search for the 4He-eta bound state via exclusive measurement of the excitation function for the dd->3Heppi- reaction, was performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Juelich with the WASA-at-COSY detection system. The data were taken during a slow acceleration of the beam from 2.185 GeV/c to 2.400 GeV/c crossing the kinematic threshold for the eta production in the dd -> 4He-eta reaction at 2.336 GeV/c. The corresponding excess energy in the 4He-eta system varied from -51.4 MeV to 22 MeV. The shape of the excitation function for the dd -> 3Heppi- was examined. No signal of the 4He-eta bound state was observed in the excitation function.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to appear in proceedings of MESON201

Study of the Low Energy Dynamics in the ppK+K- System with the Cosy-11 Magnetic Spectrometer

The near threshold production of K+K- pairs in proton-proton collisions has been investigated at the cooler synchrotron COSY below and above the threshold for the \phi meson production. The experimental excitation function determined for the pp-->ppK+K- reaction differs from theoretical expectations including proton-proton final state interaction. The discrepancy may be assigned to the influence of K+K- or pK interaction. In this article we present distributions of the cross section for the pp-->ppK+K- reaction as a function of the invariant masses of two and three particle subsystems at excess energies of Q=10 MeV and 28 MeV.Comment: Presented at the Symposium on Meson Physics, Cracow, 01-04 October 200

    Event Reconstruction for a DIRC

Monte Carlo simulations were made for a possible DIRC at the WASA detector at COSY. A statistical method for pattern recognition is presented and the possible angle resolution and velocity precision achieved are discussed.Comment: Minor changes in text. Figures updated. accepted by JINS

High precision measurement of the associated strangeness production in proton proton interactions

A new high precision measurement of the reaction pp -> pK+Lambda at a beam momentum of 2.95 GeV/c with more than 200,000 analyzed events allows a detailed analysis of differential observables and their inter-dependencies. Correlations of the angular distributions with momenta are examined. The invariant mass distributions are compared for different regions in the Dalitz plots. The cusp structure at the N Sigma threshold is described with the Flatt\'e formalism and its variation in the Dalitz plot is analyzed.Comment: accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.

    1/N Expansion for Exotic Baryons

The 1/N expansion for exotic baryons is developed, and applied to the masses, meson couplings and decay widths. Masses and widths of the 27 and 35 pentaquark states in the same tower as the Theta+ are related by spin-flavor symmetry. The 27 and 35 states can decay within the pentaquark tower, as well as to normal baryons, and so have larger decay widths than the lightest pentaquark Theta. The 1/N expansion also is applied to baryon exotics containing a single heavy antiquark. The decay widths of heavy pentaquarks via pion emission, and to normal baryons plus heavy D^(*),B^(*) mesons are studied, and relations following from large-N spin-flavor symmetry and from heavy quark symmetry are derived.Comment: Major additions: plots of widths and branching ratios, discussion of strong decays of heavy pentaquarks, including consequences of heavy quark symmetr

First Model-Independent Measurement of the Spin Triplet pΛp\Lambda Scattering Length from Final State Interaction in the pppK+Λ\vec{p}p \rightarrow pK^{+}\Lambda Reaction

The pppK+Λ\vec{p}p \rightarrow pK^{+}\Lambda reaction has been measured with the COSY-TOF detector at a beam momentum of 2.7GeV/c2.7\,\mathrm{GeV}/c. The polarized proton beam enables the measurement of the beam analyzing power by the asymmetry of the produced kaon (ANKA_N^{K}). This observable allows the pΛp\Lambda spin triplet scattering length to be extracted for the first time model independently from the final-state interaction in the reaction. The obtained value is at=(2.551.39+0.72stat.±0.6syst.±0.3theo.)fma_{t} = (-2.55 ^{+0.72}_{-1.39} {}_{\textrm{stat.}} \pm 0.6_{\textrm{syst.}} \pm 0.3_{\textrm{theo.}})\mathrm{fm}. This value is compatible with theoretical predictions and results from model-dependent analyses.Comment: Revised version as accepted for publication in PR

    Search for the Θˉ\bar{\Theta}^- \to K^- nˉ\bar{n} with PHENIX

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC should be sensitive to decays of the the anti--pentaquark Θˉ\bar{\Theta}^- via the K^- nˉ\bar{n} channel. Charged kaons can be identified using the standard tracking and time of flight up to a momentum of 1.5 GeV/c. Anti--neutron candidates are detected via their annihilation signal in the highly segmented electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal). In order to assess the quality of the anti--neutron identification we reconstruct the Σˉnˉπ\bar{\Sigma} \to \bar{n}\pi. As an additional crosscheck the invariant mass of K+^+ nˉ\bar{n} is reconstructed where no resonance in the pentaquark mass range is expected. At the present time no enhancement at the expected pentaquark mass is observed in dAu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV.Comment: 4 pages 5 figures contribution to the proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions (Quark Matter, Oakland, January 11-17, 2004). Cross section ratio and angular distributions of the reaction p + d -> 3He + eta at 48.8 MeV and 59.8 MeV excess energy

We present new data for angular distributions and on the cross section ratio of the p + d -> 3He + eta reaction at excess energies of Q = 48.8 MeV and Q = 59.8 MeV. The data have been obtained at the WASA-at-COSY experiment (Forschungszentrum J\"ulich) using a proton beam and a deuterium pellet target. While the shape of obtained angular distributions show only a slow variation with the energy, the new results indicate a distinct and unexpected total cross section fluctuation between Q = 20 MeV and Q = 60 MeV, which might indicate the variation of the production mechanism within this energy interval.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
