Developing and Refining a Leadership Training for Pastors of Multi-Staff Churches in the Georgia-Cumberland Conference

Problem. There is a growing recognition that ministers must be trained and competent in leadership skills to pastor successfully. Successful pastors are skilled in leadership practices. An MDiv degree does not increase a pastor’s capacity to successfully lead his/her congregation. As a result many congregations are unhappy with their pastors and are unable to maintain momentum and a sense of direction. Pastors, for their part, are overwhelmed and disheartened, with many burning out and leaving ministry. Method. Conduct a leadership enrichment program for the pastors of multi-staff churches in the Georgia-Cumberland Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, using the four-year program developed by the Christian Leadership Center of Andrews University. This program incorporates (a) a spiritual component in which participants examine their core values, create a personal mission statement, and reflect to clarify meaning in terms of knowledge, experiences, beliefs, and values; (b) provides an assessment of key leadership practices with the use of the Leadership Practices Inventory; (c) provides seminars that build on leadership theory during semi-annual cohort meetings; (d) provides and assigns the best in leadership literature; (e) includes coaching/mentoring support; and (f) establishes workgroups in order to build community and in which to discuss the reading assignment. Results. Three years after the completion of the program pastors reported greater knowledge of leadership theory and practice, a marked improvement in a variety of areas in their ability to lead their congregations and a noticeable increase in their own personal peace and happiness and in their ability to be a non-anxious presence in their congregations. Conclusion. The four-year leadership enrichment program created and offered by the Christian Leadership Center strengthens pastors, growing them into more confident, capable leaders, preparing them to serve more effectively with less debilitating stress

Lead optimization of a pyrazole sulfonamide series of trypanosoma brucei N -myristoyltransferase inhibitors:Identification and evaluation of CNS penetrant compounds as potential treatments for stage 2 human african trypanosomiasis

[Image: see text] Trypanosoma bruceiN-myristoyltransferase (TbNMT) is an attractive therapeutic target for the treatment of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT). From previous studies, we identified pyrazole sulfonamide, DDD85646 (1), a potent inhibitor of TbNMT. Although this compound represents an excellent lead, poor central nervous system (CNS) exposure restricts its use to the hemolymphatic form (stage 1) of the disease. With a clear clinical need for new drug treatments for HAT that address both the hemolymphatic and CNS stages of the disease, a chemistry campaign was initiated to address the shortfalls of this series. This paper describes modifications to the pyrazole sulfonamides which markedly improved blood–brain barrier permeability, achieved by reducing polar surface area and capping the sulfonamide. Moreover, replacing the core aromatic with a flexible linker significantly improved selectivity. This led to the discovery of DDD100097 (40) which demonstrated partial efficacy in a stage 2 (CNS) mouse model of HAT

    Pollution: A Global Threat

    Get PDF
There is a global threat of pollution that many scholars view as an epidemic. I intend to help solve this issue by examining whether or not people are taking productive steps to decrease global pollution and their own carbon footprint along the way. To answer this research question, this phenomenological study uses interviews as a method to acquire perspectives on how this global threat impacts people on an individual level and what that could mean for our future planet. Based on a review of scholarly literature, I hypothesized that even if humans are taking productive steps, pollution and its threat on society and nature will only continue to increase from previous years until the population growth begins to decrease, or until we can take productive steps to advance, regulate, enforce, advocate, and create more awareness to this massive threat. Interviews conducted with 10 New England residents revealed that humans are without a doubt taking proactive steps to decrease global pollution, but whether these steps are enough to matter on a larger scale is still yet to be decided. These findings provide an insight into unique perspectives of how this global threat impacts people on an individual level, how this could affect people at a cumulative level and what that could mean for our future planet
