Double proton tagging at the LHC as a means to discover new physics
We review the theoretical and experimental motivations behind recent
proposals to add forward proton tagging detectors to the LHC experiments as a
means to search for new physics.Comment: Talk given at the 5th Rencontres du Vietnam, 'New Views in Particle

Diffractive production of high pt photons at HERA
We study the diffractive production of high pt photons at HERA. We have
implemented the process as a new hard sub-process in the HERWIG event generator
in order to prepare the ground for a future measurement.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Contribution to the 1999 UK Phenomenology

Spin-Flavor Separation and Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in the Multichannel Kondo Problem: A Large N Approach
We consider a generalization of the multichannel
single-impurity Kondo model which we solve analytically in the limit
, , with fixed. Non-Fermi
liquid behavior of the single electron Green function and of the local spin and
flavor susceptibilities occurs in both regimes, and , with
leading critical exponents {\em identical} to those found in the conformal
field theory solution for {\em all} and (with ). We explain
this remarkable agreement and connect it to ``spin-flavor separation", the
essential feature of the non-Fermi-liquid fixed point of the multichannel Kondo
problem.Comment: 14 pages, 1 Figure (Poscript file attached), Revte

Servo-Stabilization of Low-Frequency Oscillations in a Liquid Bipropellant Rocket Motor
The recent work of H. S. Tsien concerning the servostabilization of rocket motors is extended to the liquid bipropellant rocket motor. It is shown that by use of a feedback system containing a device to sense the combustion chamber pressure, a suitably designed amplifier, and a servomechanism which governs the propellant How, the low-frequency oscillations which occur in the rocket configuration may be stabilized for any value of combustion time lag. A method is given for determining a transfer function of the feedback loop which will assure stable operation. The technique of the Satche diagram is employed in stability analysis
Two-axis winch installer for heavy ducts in confined space
Two-axis winching and traversing device is used for installing liquid-propellant rocket-engine fuel and liquid oxygen suction ducts between the valves and the rocket engine on a test stand. The device raises and maneuvers the duct into the required position where it can be safely installed by mechanics
Revealing local failed supernovae with neutrino telescopes
We study the detectability of neutrino bursts from nearby direct black
hole-forming collapses (failed supernovae) at Megaton detectors. Due to their
high energetics, these bursts could be identified - by the time coincidence of
N >= 2 or N >= 3 events within a ~ 1 s time window - from as far as ~ 4-5 Mpc
away. This distance encloses several supernova-rich galaxies, so that failed
supernova bursts could be detected at a rate of up to one per decade,
comparable to the expected rate of the more common, but less energetic, neutron
star-forming collapses. Thus, the detection of a failed supernova within the
lifetime of a Mt detector is realistic. It might give the first evidence of
direct black hole formation, with important implications on the physics of this
phenomenon.Comment: LaTeX, 4 pages, 4 figures; minor changes to the text, results
