Towards a Mixed Economy of Youth Justice

    Get PDF
The concept of a ?mixed economy of justice? involves the idea that welfare is delivered by a range of agencies working in partnership. The United Kingdom 1998 Crime and Disorder Act introduced multi-agency approaches requiring criminal justice agencies to work together with local authorities and communities, following a ?mixed economy of justice? model. This presentation introduces the author?s new study on how mixed economies work within youth justice in the United Kingdom. It points out that there are historical precedents to these partnerships and provides an overview of recent developments in the field. The presentation then concludes that contemporary partnerships around youth justice present a much higher level of commodification and that voluntary action now works more on the principle of investment than altruism. A criminal justice ?industry? is now in place. Is it possible, however, to ?buy social justice?? And how far has the development of a multi-agency criminal justice ?industry? assisted the realisation of child rights in the United Kingdom? If it has not, how can it be made to do so and by whom? These essential questions aim to be addressed by the author?s new project

Carson W. Cox: A Missionary to China

Excerpt: Eunice, is Larkin Cox speaking the truth? Does thee desire to marry him and go to that wild new Territory, infested still with wild buffalo, coyotes and Indians? The tall young man, with the fingers of his right hand touching the new but heavy growth of dark beard, looked steadfastly at the slender Quakeress across the fireplace from him. Eunice Cox stood. She looked not at her father, who had spoken, but at her lover and replied, Yes, father; I wish to marry Larkin and go wherever he sees fit to take me. Her mother and sisters began to weep. Her brothers, William and Reuben, not to be repressed, taunted her: What will thee do when a wild buffalo chases thee or the Indians surround thy house? I shall trust God to keep the buffaloes away and to make the Indians friendly, and trust Larkin Cox to make peace with the Indians. Then said stern Michael Cox, the father of Eunice, addressing his wife, Rhoda, We must speak with Gideon and Hulda Cox. Thee is not of age, is thee, Larkin?https://digitalcommons.georgefox.edu/quakerbooks/1063/thumbnail.jp

We determine the blocks of the Brauer algebra in characteristic zero. We also give information on the submodule structure of standard modules for this algebra

Another self-similar blast wave: Early time asymptote with shock heated electrons and high thermal conductivity

    Get PDF
Accurate approximations are presented for the self-similar structures of nonradiating blast waves with adiabatic ions, isothermal electrons, and equation ion and electron temperatures at the shock. The cases considered evolve in cavities with power law ambient densities (including the uniform density case) and have negligible external pressure. The results provide the early time asymptote for systems with shock heating of electrons and strong thermal conduction. In addition, they provide analytical results against which two fluid numerical hydrodynamic codes can be checked

Beyond Same-Sex Marriage: Attitudes on LGBT Nondiscrimination Laws and Religious Exemptions - Finding from the 2015 American Values Atlas

    Get PDF
Across 2015, the year that saw same-sex marriage become legal in all 50 states following the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in June, public opinion on same-sex marriage remained remarkably stable. Based on interviews with more than 42,000 Americans conducted between May and December 2015, PRRI finds that 53% of Americans support allowing gay and lesbian people to legally marry, while 37% are opposed. In surveys conducted during May 2015, the month before the Supreme Court decision, 53% of the public on average supported same-sex marriage. Weekly tracking polls showed no significant shift in opinion as a result of the court decision, with the June average showing 55% support and the July average showing 53% support

Surface diffusion coefficients for room acoustics : free-field measures

    Get PDF
A surface diffusion coefficient is needed in room acoustics to enable the quality of diffusing surfaces to be evaluated. It may also facilitate more accurate geometric room acoustic models. This paper concentrates on diffusion coefficients derived from free-field polar responses. An extensive set of two- and three-dimensional measurements and predictions was used to test the worth of different diffusion coefficient definitions. The merits and problems associated with these types of coefficients are discussed, and past parameters reviewed. Two new coefficients are described. The new measure based on the autocorrelation function is forwarded as the best free-field coefficient. The strengths and weaknesses of the coefficient are defined. © 2000 Acoustical Society of America

Multiple Molecular H2 Outflows in AFGL 618

We report high spatial (0.5 arcsec) and high spectral (9 km/s) resolution spectro-imaging of the 2.12 micron H2 1-0 S(1) line in the proto-planetary nebula AFGL 618 using BEAR at the CFHT. The observations reveal the presence of multiple, high-velocity, molecular outflows that align with the remarkable optical jets seen in HST images. The structure and kinematics of the outflows show how jets interact with circumstellar gas and shape the environment in which planetary nebulae form.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures. To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letter
