    Understanding the relationship between ignition delay and burn duration in a constant volume vessel at diesel engine conditions

    Experiments were performed in a constant volume vessel, with fuel sprays injected into the vessel at various different pressure and temperature conditions chosen to represent diesel engine operation at various loads. A range of diesel primary reference fuels (i.e. mixtures of cetane and heptamethylnonane) of varying cetane number (CN) were tested, and as expected lower CN fuels have longer ignition delays. Burn period was plotted against ignition delay and two distinct trends can be seen: “mainly diffusion” diesel combustion in which burn period decreases with ignition delay and “mainly pre-mixed” diesel combustion in which burn period increases with ignition delay. There is typically a minimum in plots of burn period versus ignition delay which represents the transition between the two types of combustion mode. Higher CN, higher engine load and higher boost pressure would seem to favour “mainly diffusion” combustion whilst lower CN, lower loads and non boosted conditions favour “mainly pre-mixed” combustion

Copyright @ 2008 Elsevier B.V.In this work, the effects of a standard ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) fuel and a new, ultra-clean synthetic GTL (gas-to-liquid) fuel on the performance, combustion and emissions of a single-cylinder, direct injection, diesel engine were studied under different operating conditions with addition of simulated reformer product gas, referred to as reformed EGR (REGR). For this purpose various levels of REGR of two different compositions were tested. Tests with standard EGR were also carried out for comparison. Experiments were performed at four steady state operating conditions and the brake thermal efficiency, combustion process and engine emission data are presented and discussed. In general, GTL fuel resulted in a higher brake thermal efficiency compared to ULSD but the differences depended on the engine condition and EGR/REGR level and composition. The combustion pattern was significantly modified when the REGR level was increased. Although the extent of the effects of REGR on emissions depended on the engine load, it can be generally concluded that an optimal combination of GTL and REGR significantly improved both NOx and smoke emissions. In some cases, NOx and smoke emission reductions of 75% and 60%, respectively, were achieved compared to operation with ULSD without REGR.     Influence of spark ignition in the determination of Markstein lengths using spherically expanding flames

    Constant pressure outwardly propagating flame experiments in a spherical bomb are performed to examine the duration and radius over which spark ignition effects persist. This is motivated by the need to properly account for such effects in the measurement of laminar burning velocity and Markstein length using the spark ignited expanding flame technique. Ignition energy was varied and its effects on flame propagation in methane-air and isooctane-air mixtures were studied. The Markstein length of the mixture proved critical in the ignition energy dependency of flame propagation. For relatively high values, an underlying common variation of self-sustaining flame speed with radius can be identified by the rapid convergence of curves for different ignition energies. As the Markstein length decreases, low energy spark ignition is found to give rise to a distorted and wrinkled flame kernel. For such mixtures, due to the weak effect of stretch, the kernel subsequently develops into a non-spherically propagating flame. In these cases the spark ignition effect persists up to large radius. It is shown that using low ignition energy leads to a flame speed, during the development phase, which is higher than that of a self-sustaining spherical flame. It is further shown that if this effect is not accounted for, measurements of Markstein length using standard fitting techniques results in a large error. This problem is found to worsen as the Markstein length decreases, such that its apparent measured value becomes increasingly influenced by any distortions of the flame kernel produced by the spark

    Laminar burning velocity measurements of liquid fuels at elevated pressures and temperatures with combustion residuals

    The laminar burning velocity is a fundamental property of a fuel that affects many aspects of its combustion behaviour. Experimental values are required to validate kinetic simulations, and also to provide input for models of flashback, minimum ignition energy and turbulent combustion.A constant volume vessel (rated at 3.4. MPa) in conjunction with a multi-zone model was used to calculate burning velocity from pressure and schlieren data, allowing the user to select data uncorrupted by heat transfer or cellularity. Using the pressure rise data allows measurements to be derived for much higher pressures and temperatures than when the constant pressure data are used. A 12 term correlation for burning velocity was fitted to the data.n-Heptane, iso-octane, toluene, ethylbenzene and ethanol were tested over a wide range of initial pressures (50, 100, 200 and 400 kPa), temperatures (310, 380 and 450. K) and equivalence ratios (0.7-1.4), along with tests using combustion residuals at mole fractions of up to 0.3. The results compared favourably with the limited data already published, especially at high pressures. Conditions at the onset of cellularity are given for iso-octane. © 2011 The Combustion Institute
