    Low dimensional behavior in three-dimensional coupled map lattices

    The analysis of one-, two-, and three-dimensional coupled map lattices is here developed under a statistical and dynamical perspective. We show that the three-dimensional CML exhibits low dimensional behavior with long range correlation and the power spectrum follows 1/f1/f noise. This approach leads to an integrated understanding of the most important properties of these universal models of spatiotemporal chaos.     RCAN1.4 regulates VEGFR-2 internalisation, cell polarity and migration in human microvascular endothelial cells

    Regulator of calcineurin 1 (RCAN1) is an endogenous inhibitor of the calcineurin pathway in cells. It is expressed as two isoforms in vertebrates: RCAN1.1 is constitutively expressed in most tissues, whereas transcription of RCAN1.4 is induced by several stimuli that activate the calcineurin-NFAT pathway. RCAN1.4 is highly upregulated in response to VEGF in human endothelial cells in contrast to RCAN1.1 and is essential for efficient endothelial cell migration and tubular morphogenesis. Here, we show that RCAN1.4 has a role in the regulation of agonist-stimulated VEGFR-2 internalisation and establishment of endothelial cell polarity. siRNA-mediated gene silencing revealed that RCAN1 plays a vital role in regulating VEGF-mediated cytoskeletal reorganisation and directed cell migration and sprouting angiogenesis. Adenoviral-mediated overexpression of RCAN1.4 resulted in increased endothelial cell migration. Antisense-mediated morpholino silencing of the zebrafish RCAN1.4 orthologue revealed a disrupted vascular development further confirming a role for the RCAN1.4 isoform in regulating vascular endothelial cell physiology. Our data suggest that RCAN1.4 plays a novel role in regulating endothelial cell migration by establishing endothelial cell polarity in response to VEGF

    Many-body physics of a quantum fluid of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity

    Some recent results concerning nonlinear optics in semiconductor microcavities are reviewed from the point of view of the many-body physics of an interacting photon gas. Analogies with systems of cold atoms at thermal equilibrium are drawn, and the peculiar behaviours due to the non-equilibrium regime pointed out.     Predicting protein decomposition: the case of aspartic-acid racemization kinetics

    The increase in proportion of the non-biological (D-) isomer of aspartic acid (Asp) relative to the L- isomer has been widely used in archaeology and geochemistry as a tool for dating. The method has proved controversial, particularly when used for bones. The non-linear kinetics of Asp racemization have prompted a number of suggestions as to the underlying mechanism(s) and have led to the use of mathe- matical transformations which linearize the increase in D-Asp with respect to time. Using one example, a suggestion that the initial rapid phase of Asp racemization is due to a contribution from asparagine (Asn), we demonstrate how a simple model of the degradation and racemization of Asn can be used to predict the observed kinetics. A more complex model of peptide bound Asx (Asn+Asp) racemization, which occurs via the formation of a cyclic succinimide (Asu), can be used to correctly predict Asx racemi- zation kinetics in proteins at high temperatures (95-140 °C). The model fails to predict racemization kinetics in dentine collagen at 37 °C. The reason for this is that Asu formation is highly conformation dependent and is predicted to occur extremely slowly in triple helical collagen. As conformation strongly in£uences the rate of Asu formation and hence Asx racemization, the use of extrapolation from high temperatures to estimate racemization kinetics of Asx in proteins below their denaturation temperature is called into question. In the case of archaeological bone, we argue that the D:L ratio of Asx re£ects the proportion of non- helical to helical collagen, overlain by the e¡ects of leaching of more soluble (and conformationally unconstrained) peptides. Thus, racemization kinetics in bone are potentially unpredictable, and the proposed use of Asx racemization to estimate the extent of DNA depurination in archaeological bones is challenged

    Evolution of turbulent spots in a parallel shear flow

    The evolution of turbulent spots in a parallel shear flow is studied by means of full three-dimensional numerical simulations. The flow is bounded by free surfaces and driven by a volume force. Three regions in the spanwise spot cross-section can be identified: a turbulent interior, an interface layer with prominent streamwise streaks and vortices and a laminar exterior region with a large scale flow induced by the presence of the spot. The lift-up of streamwise streaks which is caused by non-normal amplification is clearly detected in the region adjacent to the spot interface. The spot can be characterized by an exponentially decaying front that moves with a speed different from that of the cross-stream outflow or the spanwise phase velocity of the streamwise roll pattern. Growth of the spots seems to be intimately connected to the large scale outside flow, for a turbulent ribbon extending across the box in downstream direction does not show the large scale flow and does not grow. Quantitatively, the large scale flow induces a linear instability in the neighborhood of the spot, but the associated front velocity is too small to explain the spot spreading.Comment: 10 pages, 10 Postscript figure

    VEGF-A165b protects against proteinuria in a mouse model with progressive depletion of all endogenous VEGF-A splice isoforms from the kidney

    Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is strongly associated with a decrease in the expression of VEGF-A. However, little is known about the contribution of VEGF-A splice isoforms to kidney physiology and pathology. Previous studies suggest that the splice isoform VEGF-A165b (resulting from alternative usage of a 3’ splice site in the terminal exon) is protective for kidney function. We show here, in a quad-transgenic model, that over-expression of VEGF-A165b alone is sufficient to rescue the increase in proteinuria as well as glomerular water permeability in the context of progressive depletion of all VEGF-A isoforms from the podocytes. Ultrastructural studies show that the glomerular basement membrane is thickened, podocyte slit width is increased and sub-podocyte space coverage is reduced when VEGF-A is depleted, all of which are rescued in VEGF-A165b over-expressors. VEGF-A165b restores the expression of PECAM-1 in glomerular endothelial cells and glomerular capillary circumference. Mechanistically, it increases VEGFR2 expression both in vivo and in vitro and down-regulates genes involved in migration and proliferation of endothelial cells, otherwise up-regulated by the canonical isoform VEGF-A165. Our study indicates that manipulation of VEGF-A splice isoforms could be a novel therapeutic avenue in chronic glomerular disease

    Microbial differences between dental plaque and historic dental calculus are related to oral biofilm maturation stage

    Dental calculus, calcified oral plaque biofilm, contains microbial and host biomolecules that can be used to study historic microbiome communities and host responses. Dental calculus does not typically accumulate as much today as historically, and clinical oral microbiome research studies focus primarily on living dental plaque biofilm. However, plaque and calculus reflect different conditions of the oral biofilm, and the differences in microbial characteristics between the sample types have not yet been systematically explored.     Legal determinants of external finance revisited : the inverse relationship between investor protection and societal well-being

    This paper investigates relationships between corporate governance traditions and quality of life as measured by a number of widely reported indicators. It provides an empirical analysis of indicators of societal health in developed economies using a classification based on legal traditions. Arguably the most widely cited work in the corporate governance literature has been the collection of papers by La Porta et al. which has shown, inter alia, statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for investor protection. We show statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for societal health. Our comparative evidence suggests that the interests of investors may not be congruent with the interests of wider society, and that the criteria for judging the effectiveness of approaches to corporate governance should not be restricted to financial metrics

    Chelating N-heterocyclic carbene-carboranes offer flexible ligand coordination to IrIII, RhIII and RuII: effect of ligand cyclometallation in catalytic transfer hydrogenation

    Imidazolium salts linked by an ethyl tether to closo-dicarbadodecaboranes were reacted with [IrCp*Cl2]2, [RhCp*Cl2]2 or [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 in the presence of Ag2O to prepare complexes of the type [MCp*(NHC)Cl2] (M = Ir, Rh; NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) or [Ru(p-cymene)(NHC)Cl2]. When the NHC contained an N-tBu substituent, C–H activation of the tBu and subsequent alkyl coordination was observed at Ir. Coordination of the closo-dicarbadodecaborane moiety to Ir was possible to give 7-membered metallacycles, coordinated through the carbenic carbon of the NHC and either a carbon atom or a boron atom of the carborane. Examination of the Ir complexes in the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol reveals that cyclometallation of the carborane moiety is important for catalytic efficacy, indicating a bifunctional mechanism and involvement of the dicarbadodecaborane anion

    Attitudes towards Human Papillomavirus vaccination among African parents in a city in the north of England: A qualitative study.

    Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is sexually transmitted and has been conclusively linked to cervical cancer and genital warts. Cervical cancer is attributed to approximately 1100 deaths annually in UK, and is the second most common female cancer globally. It has been suggested that black African women are more predisposed to HPV infection and cervical cancer. A vaccine has been developed to reduce HPV infection, and in the UK, has been offered to 12-13 year old adolescent girls through schools as part of their childhood immunization programme since 2008. Upon programme initiation, it was noted that vaccine uptake was lower in schools where girls from ethnic minority groups were proportionately higher. Objectives: The study’s objectives were to explore factors influencing UK based African parents’ acceptance or decline of the HPV vaccine, whether fathers and mothers share similar views pertaining to vaccination and any interfamily tensions resulting from differing views. Methodology: A qualitative study was conducted with five African couples residing in north England. Face to face semi-structured interviews were carried out. Participants were parents to at least one daughter aged between 8 and 14 years. Recruitment was done through purposive sampling using snowballing. Results: HPV and cervical cancer awareness was generally low, with awareness lower in fathers. HPV vaccination was generally unacceptable among the participants, with fear of promiscuity, infertility and concerns that it’s still a new vaccine with yet unknown side effects cited as reasons for vaccine decline. There was HPV risk denial 3 as religion and good cultural upbringing seemed to result in low risk perceptions, with HPV and cervical cancer generally perceived as a white person’s disease. Religious values and cultural norms influenced vaccine decision-making, with fathers acting as the ultimate decision makers. Current information about why the vaccine is necessary was generally misunderstood. Conclusion: Tailored information addressing religious and cultural concerns may improve vaccine acceptability in African parents
