My Home is My Post-Office: Evaluation of a decentralized email architecture on Internet-of-Things low-end device

Users predominantly access their email via mobile devices. This presents a two-fold challenge to the email applications. First, email's update from multiple devices has to be eventually reconciled with the server. Prioritization of updates is difficult and maybe undesirable. Solving this problem requires a data store with the complete history of email changes. Second, legacy email protocols don't provide an optimal email synchronization and access in mobile environment. In this paper we are proposing to take advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT) phenomena. In IoT environment a user may have multiple interconnected in-home low-end devices with publicly accessible address. In this architecture we move the email application from the central service into user's in-home and mobile devices, store complete email history on each device, and replace legacy IMAP and SMTP protocols with a synchronization protocol found in Distributed Version Control Systems(DVCS). This addresses the email reconciliation issue, optimizes the bandwidth usage, and intrinsically puts the user in control of her data. We analyze a number of stores and synchronization implementations and compare them with the open source Dovecot email server.Comment: 9 pages, 15 figures, 1 table, ICC'17, Cambridge, U

    The epidemiology of acute encephalitis.

Encephalitis means inflammation of the brain matter. Despite being a rare condition, encephalitis is of public health importance worldwide because it has high morbidity and mortality. Yet, many details about its epidemiology have yet to be elucidated. This review attempts to summarise what is known about the epidemiology of the infective causes of encephalitis and is based on a literature search of the Medline archives. Infection is the most common cause identified, with viruses being the most important known aetiological agents. Incidence varies between studies but is generally between 3.5 and 7.4 per 100,000 patient-years. Encephalitis affects peoples of all ages; however, incidence is higher in the paediatric population. Although both sexes are affected, most studies have shown a slight predominance in males. Encephalitis occurs worldwide; some aetiologies have a global distribution (herpesviruses) while others are geographically restricted (arboviruses). Although definite epidemiological trends are evident, it is difficult to make generalisations as few population-based studies exist, most cases are not reported to health authorities, and many possible pathogens are implicated but in most cases a cause is never found. A better understanding of the epidemiology of this devastating disease will pave the way for better prevention and control strategies

However, recent trends and industry needs are favoring TCP presence in IoT environments. In this article, we describe the main IoT scenarios where TCP will be used. We then analyze the historically claimed issues of TCP in the IoT context. We argue that, in contrast to generally accepted wisdom, most of those possible issues fall in one of the following categories: i) are also found in well-accepted IoT end-to-end reliability mechanisms, ii) can be solved, or iii) are not actual issues. Considering the future prominent role of TCP in the IoT, we provide recommendations for lightweight TCP implementation and suitable operation in such scenarios, based on our IETF standardization work on the topic.Postprint (author's final draft
