Background suppressing Gabor energy filtering
In the field of facial emotion recognition, early research advanced with the use of Gabor filters. However, these filters lack generalization and result in undesirably large feature vector size. In recent work, more attention has been given to other local appearance features. Two desired characteristics in a facial appearance feature are generalization capability, and the compactness of representation. In this paper, we propose a novel texture feature inspired by Gabor energy filters, called background suppressing Gabor energy filtering. The feature has a generalization component that removes background texture. It has a reduced feature vector size due to maximal representation and soft orientation histograms, and it is awhite box representation. We demonstrate improved performance on the non-trivial Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge 2012 grand-challenge dataset by a factor of 7.17 over the Gabor filter on the development set. We also demonstrate applicability of our approach beyond facial emotion recognition which yields improved classification rate over the Gabor filter for four bioimaging datasets by an average of 8.22%
Study of the drying kinetics for apples in a convective drier
In the present work a convective drier was used to dehydrate apple slices up to a moisture
content of less than 2 % (wet basis), so as to obtain a crunchy apple snack. Two commercial
varieties were tested, namely Golden and Smith. The drier was operated at different
temperatures, 30, 40 50 and 60 ºC, and the moisture content of the product was calculated
based on the mass, which was registered by means of a data logger, throughout the whole
trial. The kinetic data was then treated and fitted to different thin layer models frequently cited
in literature, which were: Page, Henderson and Pabis, Logarithmic and Vega-Lemus. Others
were also tested, but convergence was not achieved. For the fitting software SigmaPlot V8.0
(SPSS, Inc.) was used, and to evaluate the quality of the estimations the correlation
coefficient (R) and the standard error of the estimate (SEE) were determined
From the models tested it was possible to see that the Vega-Lemus was the worst to
describe the drying kinetic in the present case, on the other hand, the best model was the
Page. Also the Fick’s equation for diffusion was used to estimate the diffusivities at different
temperatures, and from those to estimate the activation energy for moisture diffusion, which
was found to be 35 kJ/mol for the drying of apples from Golden variety and 33 kJ/mol for the
Smith variety
Study of chemical and physical properties of apples dried in a convective drier.
The present study evaluates the effects of drying on apple slices from two varieties, Golden
Delicious and Granny Smith, which were analyzed in terms of physical and chemical
properties. The tests involved the determination of moisture, acidity, soluble solids, colour
and texture. Trials were performed in a convective hot air dryer for different temperatures of
30, 40, 50 and 60 ° C.
The results showed that the final moisture of the two varieties of apples was around 3 % (wet
basis). With regards to acidity, the variety Granny Smith was found to be more acid than the
Golden Delicious. The soluble solids are present, in general, in greater amounts in the
variety Granny Smith. As to the colour, this varied very considerably from the fresh apples to
the dried ones. Apples of the variety Golden Delicious presented a higher intensity of yellow
(b* > 0) and red (a* > 0). However, in comparison to the variety Granny Smith the Golden
Delicious presents, in general, smaller total colour differences. The textural attributes
evaluated were hardness, adhesiveness, elasticity, cohesiveness and chewiness. However,
the results for adhesiveness were very close to zero showing that these products do not
have adhesiveness, as it happens with other fruits. It was also found that the fresh apples
have a much higher hardness, when compared to the dried samples. Elasticity, on the other
hand, was kept approximately constant regardless of the variety or state. Cohesiveness was
higher in the fresh apples, and for the dried ones was higher for variety Golden. Finally,
chewiness was higher for the fresh apples in comparison to the dried ones, and was higher
for Golden Delicious when compared with Granny Smith
Long-lived stops in MSSM scenarios with a neutralino LSP
This work investigates the possibility of a long-lived stop squark in
supersymmetric models with the neutralino as the lightest supersymmetric
particle (LSP). We study the implications of meta-stable stops on the sparticle
mass spectra and the dark matter density. We find that in order to obtain a
sufficiently long stop lifetime so as to be observable as a stable R-hadron at
an LHC experiment, we need to fine tune the mass degeneracy between the stop
and the LSP considerably. This increases the stop-neutralino coanihilation
cross section, leaving the neutralino relic density lower than what is expected
from the WMAP results for stop masses ~1.5 TeV/c^2. However, if such scenarios
are realised in nature we demonstrate that the long-lived stops will be
produced at the LHC and that stop-based R-hadrons with masses up to 1 TeV/c^2
can be detected after one year of running at design luminosity
The influence of semantic and phonological factors on syntactic decisions: An event-related brain potential study
During language production and comprehension, information about a word's syntactic properties is sometimes needed. While the decision about the grammatical gender of a word requires access to syntactic knowledge, it has also been hypothesized that semantic (i.e., biological gender) or phonological information (i.e., sound regularities) may influence this decision. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured while native speakers of German processed written words that were or were not semantically and/or phonologically marked for gender. Behavioral and ERP results showed that participants were faster in making a gender decision when words were semantically and/or phonologically gender marked than when this was not the case, although the phonological effects were less clear. In conclusion, our data provide evidence that even though participants performed a grammatical gender decision, this task can be influenced by semantic and phonological factors
Simultaneous determination of natural and synthetic steroid estrogens and their conjugates in aqueous matrices by liquid chromatography / mass spectrometry
An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of nine free and conjugated steroid estrogens was developed with application to environmental aqueous matrices. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was employed for isolation and concentration, with detection by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) using electrospray ionisation (ESI) in the negative mode. Method recoveries for various aqueous matrices (wastewater, lake and drinking water) were determined, recoveries proving to be sample dependent. When spiked at 50 ng/l concentrations in sewage influent, recoveries ranged from 62-89 % with relative standard deviations (RSD) < 8.1 %. In comparison, drinking water spiked at the same concentrations had recoveries between 82-100 % with an RSD < 5%. Ion suppression is a known phenomenon when using ESI; hence its impact on method recovery was elucidated for raw sewage. Both ion suppression from matrix interferences and the extraction procedure has bearing on the overall method recovery. Analysis of municipal raw sewage identified several of the analytes of interest at ng/l concentrations, estriol (E3) being the most abundant. Stabilization of angiotensin-(1-7) by key substitution with a cyclic non-natural amino acid
Angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)], a heptapeptide hormone of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), is a promising candidate as a treatment for cancer that reflects its antiproliferative and anti-angiogenic properties. However, the peptide’s therapeutic potential is limited by the short half-life and low bioavailability resulting from rapid enzymatic metabolism by peptidases including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and dipeptidyl peptidase 3 (DPP 3). We report the facile assembly of three novel Ang-(1-7) analogues by solid-phase peptide synthesis which incorporates the cyclic non-natural δ-amino acid ACCA. The analogues containing the ACCA substitution at the site of ACE cleavage exhibit complete resistance to human ACE, while substitution at the DDP3 cleavage site provided stability against DPP 3 hydrolysis. Furthermore, the analogues retain the anti-proliferative properties of Ang-(1-7) against the 4T1 and HT-1080 cancer cell lines. These results suggest that ACCA-substituted Ang-(1-7) analogues which show resistance against proteolytic degradation by peptidases known to hydrolyze the native heptapeptide may be novel therapeutics in the treatment of cancer
Inverse Association between trans Isomeric and Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Pregnant Women and Their Newborns: Data from Three European Countries
Background: trans unsaturated fatty acids are thought to interfere with essential fatty acid metabolism. To extend our knowledge of this phenomenon, we investigated the relationship between trans isomeric and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) in mothers during pregnancy and in their infants at birth. Methods: Fatty acid composition of erythrocyte phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) was determined in Spanish (n = 120), German (n = 78) and Hungarian (n = 43) women at the 20th and 30th week of gestation, at delivery and in their newborns. Results: At the 20th week of gestation, the sum of trans fatty acids in PE was significantly (p < 0.01) lower in Hungarian [0.73 (0.51), % wt/wt, median (IQR)] than in Spanish [1.42 (1.36)] and German [1.30 (1.21)] women. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) values in PE were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in Hungarian {[}5.65 (2.09)] than in Spanish [4.37 (2.60)] or German [4.39 (3.3.2)] women. The sum of trans fatty acids significantly inversely correlated to DHA in PCs in Spanish (r = -0.37, p < 0.001), German (n = -0.77, p < 0.001) and Hungarian (r = -0.35, p < 0.05) women, and in PEs in Spanish (r = -0.67, p < 0.001) and German (r = -0.71, p < 0.001), but not in Hungarian (r = -0.02) women. Significant inverse correlations were seen between trans fatty acids and DHA in PEs at the 30th week of gestation (n = 241, r = -0.52, p < 0.001), at delivery (n = 241, r = -0.40, p < 0.001) and in cord lipids (n = 218, r = -0.28, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Because humans cannot synthesize trans isomeric fatty acids, the data obtained in the present study support the concept that high maternal trans isomeric fatty acid intake may interfere with the availability of LCPUFA both for the mother and the fetus.
